Achison and Falzarano Heat Things Up in Asbury Park! A Kweevak.com Rock Report by Rich and Laura Lynch Have you ever wondered what Australian Tuna tasted like? Alright, we haven't either but we did have an opportunity to catch some tasty music by a famed Australian blues guitar player and a long-time member of Hot Tuna who were both coming off a successful teaching and performance engagement at Jorma Kaukonen's Fur Peace Reach in late May.

Upon first hearing Geoff Achison and The Soul Diggers on his smoking blues rock CD, Getting Evil, we penned him the Australian Stevie Ray Vaughn. He's that good and Geoff continues to collaborate with first rate players. Like Stevie, Achison brings innovation and passion to his songs that range from ballads to traditional blues to raved-up rockers. Hailing from a rural train town in Victoria, Australia, Geoff Achison is a world-class performer. Inspired by American blues he started playing the guitar and later moved to Melbourne to immerse himself in the genre. Achison is a versatile guitarist brilliantly blending the blues with rock, jazz, classical, soul and so much more. Geoff's voice is deep and gravely yet he sings with clarity and emotion. Geoff's tour to the United States in the spring of 2005 included a return trip to Jorma Kaukonen's Fur Peace Ranch as a guest teacher. Achison played a number of gigs in the tri-state area including the May 28, 2005 kick off show for the Boardwalk Concert Series in Asbury Park, New Jersey. It was a sunny and slightly cool day at the Jersey shore. A stage was installed on the beach in front of Convention Hall. Promptly at twelve Geoff took the stage armed with his acoustic guitar and accompanied by the ocean surf. Geoff opened his four hour set, playing a complex song in which he handled both the rhythm and lead parts. He introduced himself stating he was from Australia as he was pointing out to the ocean. Achison's next number was a blues based song with Geoff tapping the rhythm on the body of the guitar. It was mesmerizing followed by and old J.J. Cale tune that he played in his own unique way. Again, Geoff masterfully handled both the rhythm and leads as he finger picked his way through the classic. Achison also covered Hendrix's 'The Wind Cries Mary', sung beautifully in his deep, bluesy voice. He played the song complete with jams and rich textures and tones.
![]() Geoff Achison, Michael Falzarano and Kweevak's Laura Lynch! Geoff's witty sense of humor shined through as he joked about the surroundings. In the sky were the sporadic, low flying planes with advertising banners. A little further away on the boardwalk a crew was working diligently on a renovation project. Occasional, drilling punctuated the air but Achison took it in stride joking that it was part of the show. Geoff continued finger picking, playing a Taj Mahal Medley featuring up-tempo guitar licks that meandered into fancy fret work. As he played a Lloyd Jones song he told the crowd to get ready for the angle grinder solo as he played a furious lead. Preparing to perform an Albert King Suite, Geoff invited guitarist, singer, and songwriter Michael Falzarano to join him on stage. Michael is a first class musician who has been working in the industry for over thirty-five years. From the early eighties until recently, Michael was a guitarist in the legendary Hot Tuna. Falzarano also performs in other bands and he recently released The King James Sessions a solo project featuring his originals and many of his musical friends. Geoff and Michael were quickly trading licks than moving into a bridge where one would create cool sound effects as the other played lead. Their set was dynamic allowing both to sing and shine on their acoustic guitars. Together they were able to craft incredible textures and tempos as one would play in the low keys for a bass effect and the other carrying the leads before returning to a dynamic duo. After a short break, Geoff returned to the stage opening with an up tempo instrumental. The rest of his set was a mix of Achison's originals and covers, all played with passion accented with guitar sound effects and extensive jamming. Later, Michael took the stage and introduced the next song 'My AK47' as a popular digital download on the Internet. They played a few more songs with both Geoff and Michael sizzling on the guitars as the four o'clock hour brought the first of many Boardwalk Concerts to a fiery close. By the end of the day Achison would have something in common with the city's favorite son Bruce Springsteen. By playing a marathon four-hour show in front of the Boss's home away from home Achison did his part in supporting the community's continued rising.
