A SoundPress.net Feature Article by Rich and Laura Lynch On September 1, 1990, The Grateful Dead were scheduled to perform at the Shoreline Amphitheater in California. Yet, much of that year's summer tour was in limbo with the untimely death of The Dead's keyboardist Brent Mydland. Rather then cancel the show, The Jerry Garcia Band played the gig.
The surround sound DVD features a two-set, fourteen-track recital of rock classics in addition to bonus interviews with Robert Hunter (Dead lyricist) and members of The Jerry Garcia Band. All had fond memories of Jerry and performing in the group. The concert was captivating with animated keys, robust rhythms and featured female gospel backup singing. Garcia was in good voice and his guitar playing was thrilling. The set list explored a variety of genres ranging from the blues, gospel, R&B and rock. Everyone in the group appeared to be having a great time grooving to the innovative jams. On the DVD, each song flows seamlessly, building energy as the music evolves. The camera focuses mainly on Jerry with a lot of close ups on his fretwork. But there are lots of good shots of the whole band getting caught up in the mix and creating musical magic. On occasion Jerry is seen subtly smiling while guiding the improvisation. For diversity, a blurred camera trick was used during a few songs. Live at Shoreline demonstrates the emotion and quality that the Jerry Garcia Band achieved at their live shows. The DVD is a timeless testament to great experimental music!
