New DVD Documents the Band's 2004 Reunion! A SoundPress.net Feature Article by Rich and Laura Lynch The Pixies formed in 1986, in Boston, Massachusetts. They chose their name by leafing through a dictionary. In 1988, they released their first full length release. "Surfer Rosa," which was an edgy yet melodic album that lead to a deal with Electra Records. Their music, blended the quick power of punk with pop, rock and surf . Many considered The Pixies the pioneers of alternative music, opening future doors for bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam.
The Pixies second album "Doolittle" featured 'Monkey Gone To Heaven' and 'Here Comes Your Man' that were top ten hits in the modern rock category. They also built a reputation for their "quirky" live performances. The Pixies' third record was more atmospheric and generated hits in the US and the UK. "Trompe Le Monde" their fourth album was a return to their original hard sound. In 1992, The Pixies were opening for U2 during the Zoo TV Tour but tensions were growing within the band. Soon after, The Pixies broke up .and for the next ten years, band members pursued solo projects. Against all odds, The Pixies reunited in the later part of 2003. Within a few days of rehearsals they were sounded just as good as they had in the past and the idea of a tour was considered. In 2004, The Pixies played a number of major festivals including The Move in Manchester, England and Austin City Limits in Texas. Sell Out 2004 Reunion Tour captures the highlights of some of their 2004 global concerts. The first part of the DVD documents The Pixies riveting show filmed in Belfort, France. The DVD in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound features 28 songs and 15 bonus tracks. Two versions of 'Bone Machine' are included in the Belfort set. The first features clips from various shows from around the world, each city is listed as the different concerts seamlessly flow from one to the other. A prime example of the quality production that is a constant on this DVD. There are lots of camera angles focusing on all four band members along with audience shots, behind the stage camera angles and wide full stage shots. The Belfort set moves at a fast pace. The songs have the furor of punk melding with melody enhanced by contrasting male and female vocals especially strong on 'I Bleed'. The Pixies' music is diverse ranging from raging to mellower vocal exchanges. The Pixies sound great and are in top form. The crowds are a mix of new and veterans fans. All singing along and thrilled that The Pixies are back playing their own unique brand of alternative rock. The 15 bonus tracks include some of the songs featured at the France show but were recorded at different venues. 'Monkey Gone To Heaven' appears in both sets but the second version gives the viewer an opportunity to pick from six camera angles. An innovative bonus to end Sell Out 2004 Reunion Tour on a high note.
