An Addictive Mix of Rock, Jam, Space & Electronica is Creative California Band's Formula For Success! A Kweevak.com Rock Report by Rich and Laura Lynch According to ancient theories of alchemy the four essential elements of life are air, earth, fire and water. Particle brings these key components to their unique musical blend of rock, jazz, jam, funk and electronica. Since their inception in 2000, Particle has exploded on the jam band scene, entrancing crowds with their trademark funktonic sound. Like the early alchemists, Particle are innovators exploring a diverse range of music in their experimental jams. Their high-energy, physical shows are the reason for their gravitational pull and ever expanding fan base known as "particle people".
![]() Particle of Air - Steve Molitz Steve Molitz the keyboardist is cool like air. Steve brings dynamic atmosphere to the whole Particle experience. Ben Combe represents the earth with his natural looks and lively, vivid guitar playing. Darren Pujalet on drums is like fire, burning brightly on his kit, stoking the all important rhythm and melding mystically with the water-like Eric Gould who provides the fluid and ever-present bass. The stage at Mexicali Blues in Teaneck, New Jersey on November 11th, 2006 was full of amps, effect pedals and Steve's set-up that included a Moog, Korg, Kurzweil PC2x, a Hohner Cavinet D6 and a Rhodes keyboard. Excitement was apparent as some "particle people" arrived with glow sticks and comfortable clothing for a night of dancing. Soon after eleven, Particle appeared onstage with Molitz gently gesturing for the crowd to be quiet before they kicked it into high gear with an animated 'Howl at the Moon'. Air was alternating between his various keyboards to craft assorted sounds and styles. Fire was sizzling as water flowed fast and furious. Earth budded with life, adding licks played at the base of the guitar enhanced with echoing effects. The pulsing beat had the crowd grooving. The majority of Particle's songs are elastic jams with occasional vocals. Compositions move through countless changes and innovations before ending or transitioning into another song.
![]() Particle of Water - Eric Gould Particle is tight, each member with a glance can follow the move of the music even as they cross and re-cross genres as with their funky interpretation of 'Axel F'. Darren initiated the third jam of the night with his progressive drumming with Eric, Ben and Steve joining the procession. During their energetic repertoire, Particle would use this technique of one player starting the song with another person joining in after a few bars. Observing the band close up, it is hard to know who to focus on as each player and his sound is distinct yet part of the colorful cohesive whole. Particle combines a wide range of tempos, textures and tones to their musical mixtures that are mesmerizing. The majority of their instrumentals were up-tempo allowing free flowing fans plenty of opportunity to dance, with a few mid to slower tempo space-outs adding to the dynamic. Increasing and decreasing momentum is also a signature part of the exploration, exciting the crowd to frenzied dancing than gradually slowing the pace down only to heat it up again often within the same tune. Diverse effects are also components of the entrancing experience. During his solo Molitz used a voice mike to get an effect that was not quite singing as he picked out various sounds on the keyboards. Darren added to the rhythm that Steve had crafted. A few beats later Eric and Ben contributed their charges to the multifaceted jam, which incorporated trance elements. The stage got dark, as spooky sounds emanated from the stage, the rhythm subtly increased with the bass and drums. Effects from the keys were like a scratching, string noise that was hard to identify. The music flowed for a bit before three members left the stage allowing for Steve to conduct alone at his keys. Molitz elicited a wide range of sounds including a bass tone and strange mechanical voice effects. Even Steve can't help moving to the music. Setting up a loop, he vacated the stage.
![]() Particle of Earth - Ben Combe Darren was the first to return playing a primal solo. The rest of Particle soon rejoined the exploration that had a classic jam sound. A few more notes into the tune it was apparent that they were going into an inventive cover of 'The Other One' making one of the Dead's signature songs uniquely their own. The jam faded out with Gould playing a slide effect on his bass with his hand brushing down the strings of the guitar. The slow down allowed Molitz to play a soft, subtle solo before the bassist and drummer decided to kick up the tempo into another energetic experimental foray. The set closed with 'oDC' and 'Sun Mar 11' and Steve quoting Mickey Hart "are you feeling good? Then take that feeling out into the world and do something good with it." The band quickly returned to the stage for an encore that included extensive, energizing jamming during '7th Gear' and 'Gator Rap'. The concert at Mexicali Blues was our first time seeing Particle live and we were impressed. We were totally taken in by the music and the passion of the "particle people". Particle are alchemists combining the key elements of the earth and music in a fusion that is elementary yet extraordinary! Opening for Particle was The Bridge, a five piece from Baltimore, Maryland. They too were a dazzling jam band combining genres in animated tunes that included interesting instrumentation and vocals with three of the five band members singing. They had a more jazz-based sound with their sax player taking front and center on several occasions. The Bridge was also apt at effects and paid tribute to their hosts with 'Fiyo on the Bayou' adding their own rapping, jazz flair to the Particle tune.
