Yes And Return To Forever Featured on CD and DVD Offerings Kweevak.com Music News
Two new exciting progressive rock products from Eagle Records have recently crossed our path for inspection. Both items are available in CD and DVD formats and feature legendary musicians at the top of their game.
![]() Yes has been through many creative and personnel changes in the course of their career. Magnification released in 2001 was another opportunity for the band to re-define themselves yet remain true to their progressive roots. On this occasion the signature sound of keyboards had been replaced by a full orchestra. The ten-track CD was infused with insightful lyrics and innovative instrumentation. It was a return to the classic Yes sound yet changed because of the orchestra that added even more dimensions to the music. At the time, Yes toured in support of Magnification and in 2009 released Yes Symphonic Live a two disk masterpiece (and accompanying DVD) that captures the magic of Yes (Anderson, Howe, Squire & White) with the help of the European Festival Orchestra and Tom Brislin on keyboards. The fourteen-track set opens with the orchestra playing the pretty "Overture" as a prelude to Yes taking the stage and going full force into "Close To The Edge". This version features bold bass lines, complex chord structures, dynamic drumming, vibrant vocals and the orchestra filling many of the keyboard parts. The exchange of rock formations and classical codas enriched the songs bringing new elements and emotions to familiar favorites including "Long Distance Runaround", "And You And I" and "Roundabout". Songs such as the title track "Magnification", "Don't Go" and "In The Presence Of" flow on the pageantry of orchestration and the versatile virtuosity that is Yes. The production and sound on Yes Symphonic Live is clean and concise. Differences in the presentation of the music makes this an interesting and innovative album and a valuable addition to a Yes fan's collection. Return To Forever was founded in 1972 by keyboardist Chick Corea who worked with the mythical Miles Davis. Return To Forever was a progressive jazz fusion band whose members and music changed much during its five year span. Romantic Warrior released in 1976 was Return To Forever's most successful album reaching gold record status. It featured the legendary line-up of Chick Corea, Stanley Clark (bass), Al Di Meola (guitar) and Lenny White (drums). The album was famous for its experimentation and technically tough tunes. In 2008, the celebrated core members reunited and embarked on a tour of Europe and the United States. The successful shows were recorded and are now available on a 2CD set and DVD (Eagle Rock Entertainment). The media captures jazz rock fusion at its finest. Return To Forever's musicianship throughout the tour was magical and masterful covering a wide range of speeds, styles and skills. The CD is a collection of the best performances from 2008. The first CD starts with "Opening Prayer" an eclectic, electric instrumental that sets the tone for the rest of the first CD, which is versatile and vibrant. The second CD features stunning solos and "Romantic Warrior". It also includes "500 Miles High" and audio footage of the band receiving the BBC Lifetime Achievement award presented by Sir George Martin. The double CD is diverse and dynamic, demonstrating why Return To Forever was revered in the past, yet relevant in the present.
