Beatle Drummer Gets His Name on Hollywood Walk of Fame A SoundPress.net Feature Article by Deborah Rose How fitting. Former Beatle, Ringo Starr, received his star on the world famous Hollywood Walk of Fame in front of the Capital Records building on Monday night, February 8, 2010. The special evening ceremony not only unveiled the Walk of Fame's 2401st star, but it also marked the 50th anniversary of it's groundbreaking.
![]() "This is the start of the next 50 years," Ringo said. "I'm proud to be the first one." Before the ceremony started you could feel the excitement in the air as hundreds of fans filled the streets of Hollywood and Vine to witness the special presentation. To get the people pumped up, a large video screen played Ringo's videos and clips of him talking to the crowd. Coordinated by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, the event began with the members of the Los Angeles Unified School District's Marching Band performing a 21-drum salute for the legendary drummer. Of course Ringo got his star with a little help from some friends. The first to honor Ringo was musician Joe Walsh, who played with Ringo's first All Star Band in 1989, and who also happens to be his brother-in-law. Walsh called Ringo, "the most kind and helpful friend you could ever want." "One of the greatest drummers in the history of rock and roll," was praise from Producer Don Was, who first worked with Ringo on his 1992 album, Time Takes Time. He described the importance of Ringo's style saying, "his musicality, his groove and his spirit are absolutely essential components of all those great Beatle records." Singer/songwriter Ben Harper had deep reference for Ringo stating, "There are no words enough to define the global, cultural and spiritual effect and influence has had on the entire planet." Harper and Ringo became friends after they both appeared on David Lynch's Transcendental Meditation benefit in New York last year. Harper, and his band Relentless 7, have also played with Ringo in his live performances promoting his latest album, Y NOT. Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa presented Ringo with an official proclamation from the city, and host Leron Gubler, President and CEO of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce proclaimed it Ringo Starr Day.

He then commented on the kind words of his three friends, "It's hard to stand up here and to have guys like that saying what they said. These three guys are at the top of my list." An emotional Ringo took a moment to thank his wife of 30 years, actress Barbara Bach, who he met at the LAX airport in 1980 and instantly fell in love with her. Then, of course, he talked sentimentally about his former band mates. "The Beatles in my book was the best band in the world. I have three brothers. They looked out for me, I looked out for them, and we all supported each other. It was really beautiful to be a part of that, and besides that, we made some great records." Looking down at the two stars placed next to his he said, "They're still my closest friends, they're nominated here in front of me - John and George - I love them both. Peace and love! And let's not forget the guy who's in England - Paul. Peace and love." John Lennon received his star posthumously in 1988, and George Harrison in 2009. The Beatles star was dedicated in 1998 and placed in a special location at the corner of Hollywood Blvd. and La Brea, next to Elvis Presley's star. Paul McCartney has been approved to receive a star but a ceremony date has not been scheduled. "I'm thrilled to be getting this star," Ringo continued. "It's cool to get it at night. I don't know about you, but where I live the stars come out at night." Ben Harper made it clear that there are stars, and then there are super stars when he said, "Today, the Hollywood Walk of Fame is receiving a star by which all other stars are measured - Ringo Star." Ringo ended his speech, and the evening, with what was the Beatles' and now his universal message, "Peace and love."
