Alejandro Escovedo's Ringwood Express
Live at Drew's and Around the World

Alejandro Escovedo performed at Live at Drew's in Ringwood, New Jersey in November of 2010 and he made a very quick return with another appearance on Sunday, January 16, 2011. In the time in between, Escovedo has been on the road around the world in support of the Light of Day concert tour culminating with a jam session with Bruce Springsteen in Asbury Park the night before the house concert.

Guitarist, singer and songwriter Alejandro grew up in a large family and was exposed to lots of music including Latin jazz, Mexican ballads, Elvis, blues, country, punk, rock and surf. All these influences would converge into Escovedo's own unique emotional style.

Alejandro and David Pulkingham (guitars and vocals) were armed with acoustics and effect pedals as they opened with a solid version of "Anchor" with both strumming and singing. "Chelsea Hotel '78" was a stormy exchange of speed and storytelling.

"Dear Head on the Wall" was haunting and featured more fine guitar grooves. "Wave" ebbed and flowed on passionate picking and prose followed by a delicate dance of the acoustics. "Down in the Bowery" was vibrant and visual followed by the edgy "Everybody Loves Me" that featured fast furious fret work earning the two a standing ovation. In contrast, "Amsterdam" a John Cale cover was softer and soulful.

Throughout the show Pulkingham added many engaging harmonic leads and atmospheric tones to Alejanandro's acoustic stylings. David's accompaniment was both understated and illuminating and together the pair would shine in this entertaining and much-lauded two-piece configuration.

"Thank you for coming out," greeted Alejandro as he mentioned his world-trekking whirlwind gig of 11 countries in 16 days - adding, "We have been busy since we played Drew's about a month ago".

Alejandro continued with a tale about working in theater and penning the pretty "Rosalie" based on a courtship story he heard from a fellow writer. He also relayed how a part of the song was inspired by witnessing first-hand a pigeon being attacked and devoured by a hawk. Reflecting on what he had just said Escovedo added, "that's fucked up but we'll play it anyway."

"I Was Drunk" flowed on varied strumming speeds and music styles with the crowd clapping and stomping in support of the song before it circled back to a slower pace. "Castanets (I Like Her Better When She Walks Away)" was a spirited rocker with the audience adding claps and chanting the hook lines.

"Will you sing 'All the Young Dudes'? This will be a very sensitive Peter Allen version without the Hawaiian shirts," jested Alejandro. The Drew crowd muddle through the lyrics to the Mott The Hoople classic, which improved greatly when Escovedo took over with the audience acing the refrain as Alejandro and David exchanged lavish licks.

"If you ever get a chance take Drew's tour of Ringwood," joked Alejandro relating how he took a car trip around town with the party host taking in the many cemeteries, lakes, convents and the seedier mine-region part of the borough. But, Escovedo said he really loved this region and concert series that has hosted him three times in the past few years. "It really is a beautiful town, a really cool place, and I liked it a lot."

Alejandro's encore was "Always a Friend" which engaged and energized the crowd one final time. The evening ended with Drew presenting Escovedo a cake for his January 10th birthday and the audience singing "Happy Birthday" to him.

"It's always fun to play Drew's so give a hand to him," complimented Alejandro who hung out afterwards to talk to fans, sign some autographs and share his birthday with the Cupsaw contingent.
