A SoundPress.net CD Review
![]()
Gregg Allman is well-known for his work in the Allman Brothers Band as their keyboardist and lead vocalist. The Allman's were at the forefront of the Southern Rock movement of the 70's and are still popular in the jam band community for their expansive instrumentals that run the gamut from blues to rock. Gregg Allman returns to his roots on his solo release Low Country Blues - where he serves up a batch of down home southern blues infused with county and horns. The CD pays tribute to the music of Muddy Waters, Otis Rush, B.B. King, Bobby Bland, Sleepy John Estes and more. Low Country Blues - produced by T Bone Burnett - continues his winning streak in the production chair. The eleven eclectic covers and one original - the soulful "Just Another Rider" - takes Allman and Co (and the listener) on a ride through the less traveled paths of the blue's terrain. In doing so, we discover that Gregg still has the gravelly and grave vocal style well-suited to the material. Allman's backing band includes Dr. John on piano, Doyle Bramhall II on guitar, and the impressive rhythm section of bassist Dennis Crouch and drummer Jay Bellerose (from Robert Plant and Alison Krauss's multiple Grammy-winning 'Raising Sand' album). "Floating Bridge" opens the CD with a slow simmering country feel moving into the old school "Little By Little" before delivering the bluesy "Devil Got My Woman". This triplet sets the tone for the rest of the CD, which blends vintage tones with vibrant contemporary production and crisp musicianship. More musical styles emerge with the early blues roots stomp "I Can't Be Satisfied" which offers a satisfying sample from the era with some blistering bottleneck added for good measure. "Blind Man" strolls along with a big band feel and soulful vision. On his new CD, Low Country Blues, Gregg Allman and Friends serve up a dozen tasteful tracks on a tantalizing trip through the backwoods of the blues!
