JOE BONAMASSA: DUST BOWL
A SoundPress.net CD Review

Joe Bonamassa Kicks Up A Musical Storm on Dust Bowl!

The incredible six-stringer Joe Bonamassa kicks up another musical storm on his tenth full-length release in ten years - Dust Bowl. Joe brilliantly blends classic and contemporary blues into his music and Dust Bowl is packed with bluster and plenty of blistering and bluesy guitar licks. Yet, Bonamassa and long-time producer Kevin Shirley pay attention to details by adding subtle sounds and multiple styles to this twelve track collection.

The CD opens at full throttle with "Slow Train" propelled by bold beats and lavish leads. The title track "Dust Bowl" packs a wallop and proceeds from low to high flowing on a solid and beguiling bass line. "Tennessee Plates" with John Hiatt and Vince Gill has a down home flavor and is followed by "The Meaning Of The Blues". Joe's version of this blues classic features menacing heavy metal riffs that are riveting. "Black Lung Heartache" tells of hard times with Joe playing a number of unique sounding instruments including the baglama and a slide bouzouki. "You Better Watch Yourself" melds an up-tempo blues groove with a catchy hook.

"The Last Matador Of Bayonne" is slower with a Spanish flavor and a triumphant trumpet solo. "Heartbreaker" rocks with Joe sharing vocals responsibilities with the legendary Glenn Hughes - his Black Country Communion bandmate. "No Love On The Street" opens with sirens and a solemn guitar lead that progresses to sizzling. "The Whale That Swallowed Jonah" has an energized revival feel and a vibrant violin passage. "Sweet Rowena" is boogie woogie Bonamassa-style and "Prisoner" closes the CD with passion and potency. On his tenth CD Joe Bonamassa continues to pioneer a bold new frontier of the blues -- and this selection should be in your player often enough to not gather any dust!
