A SoundPress.net CD Review

Rory Gallagher's Legendary Irish Tour!

In the 1970's, Rory Gallagher was voted the number one guitar player by Melody Maker Magazine. Rory died in 1995 but he is still considered by many to be one of the greats. He has influenced countless musicians including Slash, The Edge and Janick Gers (Iron Maiden). Gallagher is still popular, thus creating a demand for new products.

Luckily, there is an abundance of concerts and tapes available from the man and they are still actively being released. The latest offering from Eagle Rock Entertainment is Rory Gallagher's Irish Tour '74 - which is presented in multiple formats including CD, vinyl, DVD and Blu-ray.

Rory, who was known for his energized live shows, was even more potent when playing to the hometown crowds. Rory Gallagher's Irish Tour '74 captures his raw power and precision at a pinnacle time in his career. He was supported by Gerry McAvoy (bass), Pod de'Ath (drums/percussion) and Lou Martin (keys). The foursome were a tight team taking the blues and rock to high levels.

The CD opens with "Cradle Rock" - a hard hitting tune abounding with riffs and rhythms. "I Wonder Who" includes band introductions and a slinky, slow blues jam. "Tattoo'd Lady" is tantalizing. "Too Much Alcohol" is a bold blues number followed by the up-tempo "As The Crow Flies" played by Rory on a twangy acoustic guitar.

"A Million Miles Away" was mesmerizing as it built momentum to its close. "Walk On Hot Coals" sizzles as it moves over diverse musical terrain. "Who's That Coming" combines blues and rock brilliantly. "Back On My Stompin' Ground" features a sassy slide and saucy jam. "Maritime" is quick instrumental to close the concert.

Rory was an expressive player and singer who was passionate and skilled and Gallagher's legacy lives on through his music. Rory Gallagher's Irish Tour '74 encapsulates his energy and expertise at a high point on his home turf!
