A SoundPress.net CD Review
![]()
Neal Morse is well-known for his work in the band Spock's Beard. Neal left the group in 2002 to devote more time to his family and faith in Jesus Christ. Morse has been prolific since his departure putting out a mix of Christian and prog-rock CDs and DVDs. In 2003, Morse released his triumphant Testimony album that chronicled his paths both musically and spiritually. Eight years later - with Testimony 2 - Neal is now ready to share more of his life stories. A making of Testimony 2 is also available in a DVD format. There is a lot to absorb instrumentally and lyrically on the two Testimony 2 discs. Musically the compositions are complex and Morse's personal stories are compelling. Neal's songs deal with the conflict of secular success competing with family and faith. Musical styles are diverse and dynamic on both CDs ranging from AOR, to prog to praise. Drummer Mike Portnoy and bassist Randy George add dazzling rhythms to these expansive epics. The thirteen tracks on the first CD look at Neal's life from the start of Spock's Beard and his spiritual struggle before leaving the band. "Time Changer" features an audio reunion of Spock's Beard as it contains a "tribute" where Neal and the guys sing an elaborate vocal section that is reminiscent of the early days of the group. Other highlights including the moving "Jayda". The song is somber as the family faces the reality of losing their daughter Jayda to a heart condition but she is miraculously saved. "Jayda" is followed by the rocking "Nighttime Collectors" where Morse states he was drunk when he heard the new of her healing. Here he slowly comes to grips with Christ and the forthcoming changes. Other songs on Disc 1 celebrate his hope in God. Disc 2 features three tracks. The energized "Absolute Beginner" starts it off. Next is the spirited and reflective "Supernatural" followed by the epic "Seeds of Gold" - which clocks in at over 25 minutes with lots of prose and progressions. Testimony 2 is a passionate and personal prog-rock odyssey. Info: -- USA/CA 2011: www.nealmorse.com (Laura Turner Lynch/Kweevak.com) |
