A SoundPress.net CD Review
![]()
Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Gregg Rolie is best-known as a musician firmly entrenched within a band structure. In Journey and Santana he was the keyboardist and vocalist on some of classic rock radio's most familiar numbers. In recent years, Rolie has toured and recorded with the Santana-esque Gregg Rolie Band. On his latest EP Five Days, Rolie journeys into the territory of a solo artist like never before. As it says on the CD's inside cover - "Re-Looked, Recorded, Re-Claimed ... Five Days". And, in that time span Gregg recorded six songs that serve to alert his fans that his approach to music on this album has taken a 180 degree spin. The six selections - Santana's "Black Magic Woman", Journey's "Anytime" and four solo tracks are delivered with a slightly dark lounge singer persona with ample piano soloing tastefully applied. On all songs we are serenaded by just the legend and his piano and the results are pleasing. The extended break on the ivories in "Love Doesn't Live Here Anymore" was simply stirring. With this new configuration Rolie can leave some of the burden and baggage that comes with fronting a band behind and go just about anywhere in the world with his music with little trouble. On his website there was recently a press release announcing his first ever solo appearance. Gregg was scheduled to take the bench behind the grand piano in the lobby bar of prestigious Four Seasons Hotel in Austin for a very special and intimate performance. With Five Days Gregg has redefined his role as performer and he's ready to fly as a solo artist in his own right. So, look for him to land near you someplace soon!
