A.J. LOVE INTERPLANETARY FUNK: Interplanetary Funk is the latest release from electric guitarist A.J. Love. A.J. has created an out of this world funk jazz collection. He blends Hendrix, Coltrane, Miles Davis and Prince into his own unique cosmic wonder. Love is supported by the talents of Hanah Jon Taylor on sax and flute. Gerald Williams on drums and Jeff Eckels on bass provide a steady solid beat and flow on this seven track CD. Interplanetary Funk is energetic, soulful and spirited. Love credits the song writing to each member of the band as a reminder that jazz is an improvisational art in which each member is contributing. A.J. and company are stellar together. The music is flawlessly produced by Love who has captured the spontaneity and power of live jazz performances on this studio release. 'Cosmic Weather' has an immense sound with dancing horns, steady percussion and subtle but strong guitar work. 'Jupiter Revisited' has sultry horns, solid bass and funky guitars. Love, Jon Taylor, Williams and Eckels radiate synergy on this aptly named CD that is sure to please.
A.J. ROSALES RESISTOR: A.J. Rosales is a guitarist, singer and songwriter. A.J. started playing guitar in his mid-teens and found that he was drawn to challenging, complex music. Today, Rosales is a multi-faceted player. Resistor is A.J.'s third release in which he handles acoustic and electric guitars as well as percussion and piano. Shawn Sommer on bass adds depth to A.J.'s compositions. Rosales' style is folk-rock with shades of classical, jazz and pop. A.J. writes intelligent, personal lyrics in a landscape of thick, layered guitars in sparse settings. Yet, his music is also melodic with catchy moments. 'Resistor' and 'Transistor' are instrumental tracks that showcase Rosales' creative and technical skills as a guitarist. The innovative 'Resistor' flows into the edgy 'Disturbance Around Me' a song that features bold, acoustic guitar work and Rosales' deep, serious vocals. The tone of the song softens before returning to the original, thick chords and A.J. singing in a higher range. 'Transistor' moves through a number of tempos and textures, exploring scales from high to low. A.J. Rosales is a talented multi-instrumentalist crafting diverse and dynamic music!
A.J. ROSALES ULTRAMARINE: ABOUT ULTRAMARINE: Although this album is dynamic and experimental, and there are a number of different sonic environments on this album, it still manages to retain a consistent vibe. Songs like Alone Again and Nominate capture a vibrant rock sound while songs such as White Sunshine and What's with all the Heartache? utilize an artistic folk-rock sound that captures his subtly emotive lyrics and vocals perfectly. The album also features two instrumentals - 3:15 (which delves into math rock) and Telekinetic (which is somewhat of an extension of the song "Transistor" from "Resistor"). All in all, this is easily A.J.'s most well rounded and well thought-out record yet. It's a must if you've enjoyed any of his past musical forays! WHAT WE WROTE: 'Alone Again' is the crunchy and poppy opening track with vibrant guitar leads underscoring an understated and plaintive Rosales plea. 'Nominate' starts out in a more tuneful vocal in a solid mid range delivery. This track has nice flow. 'What's With All the Heartache?' is one of several tunes that will pull at your heart strings and possibly create some marine like salty water near your tear ducts. Overall, we like it. Take it with you this summer to the beach or out at sea - you'll be ultra cool like the music on this disc if you do. This sophomore effort from Mr. Rosales just might help him launch the good ship A.J.

Full Circle is a forceful twelve track rock collection that includes soaring melodies, catchy choruses, powerful rock guitars, a touch of hip hop and the creative use of samples and loops. The CD is expertly produced and includes textured guitar rifts from Chris Willard, compelling vocals by Jonathan Kuiper and dynamic percussion from drummer Jeff Woods and bassist Sean Muholland. Full Circle is a high voltage collection of songs that travel down the often-dark twisted paths of relationships and life as expressed in poetic visual lyrics. This CD has energy from start to finish. The CD opens with 'Hurt Me Badly', which has cutting guitars, stabbing percussion and anguished hook lines. '14 Miles' speeds along on furious guitars, a driving beat and urgent vocals. 'So Easy' is a prime example of the well crafted lines found throughout "smile as you really frown" and "lie as you swear the truth" are poignant images backed by a heavy beat, fervent vocals and power packed guitars. Full Circle is a complete package of great hard driving rock music by the talented Accidental Superhero!
ACTION FIGURE PARTY ACTION FIGURE PARTY: The self-titled Action Figure Party CD is the vision of Greg Kurstin, who is the vocalist, keyboard player and main songwriter for the band. This twelve-song rock/jazz collection is filled with well-executed, mostly instrumental tracks. Greg's lyrics are intriguing. Action Figure Party has plenty of jams and explores samples. The CD has a funky jazz feel throughout. Special appearances by the likes of Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Sean Lennon on turntable added layers to the songs. All the tracks are well orchestrated and expertly produced. The other members of the band are strong players and form a cohesive, tight bond. The album opens with 'Everybody Ready' which demonstrates the caliber of the musicianship found throughout the CD. It has a funky beat, great horns and solid keys and guitars. 'Action Figure Party' merges techno sounds with traditional rock licks and is toped off by interesting lyrics. 'Gamera' is a good jazz jam with a catchy beat off set by the turntable. Action Figure Party is an appealing mix of experimental jams and styles that I thoroughly enjoyed.
ADAM BERNSTEIN YO MAMA YO: Yo Mama Yo is the latest release from singer/songwriter Adam Bernstein. In addition, Adam plays bass, guitar, harmonica and serves as arranger on this ten-track collection. Bernstein has performed and recorded with many great international artists. He is currently working with Driver Quartet and he is the jazz director at the Berkeley-Carroll School in New York. Adam also was the co-arranger of the score that was used by the A&R Network TV series Biography focusing on Groucho Marx. This multi-talented busy individual sites John Lennon, Brian Wilson, Todd Rundgren and The Band as some of his key influences. Bernstein's music is a mix of fun, funky sounds mixed with mellow textures. He writes insightful lyrics about love, desires and life in the concrete jungle. Bernstein's music is a colorful blend of pop merging with classical melodies with a dash of harmonies. Adam sings clearly and concisely and he surrounds himself with talented artists to play keyboards, strings, flute and brass instruments. 'Worry-Go-Round' starts slow and picks up momentum to finish up with a whirl of instrumentation. One can almost visualize being on a merry go round as Adam sings about worry and imagery. 'Shunning the Underground' has a whimsical feel, intriguing lyrics and a soulful harmonica. Yo Mama Yo is an interesting set of well-produced songs that are bright and ambient.
ADAM FALLON SLIGHTLY USED: Adam Fallon started playing clarinet at age twelve and drums at fourteen. As time went by Adam picked up other instruments and began writing songs, producing and promoting. Fallon incorporates his wide range of experiences into his music. Adam's songs are diverse. The Slightly Used EP features edgy rock, soft ballads and up-beat pop. Fallon pens songs about life, making a connection to people with his casual, frank approach to storytelling. Although all seven songs have something to offer I thought the first two tracks were the best. 'Sweet Dreams' at first appears to be a simple song. Yet, listening more closely and one hears the acoustic and electric guitars accented with a subtle B3 over a steady drumbeat. 'Someday' dabbles in both driving rock and power pop, allowing Adam to convey various moods and vocals as he looks to the future. Adam Fallon should continue to grow his fan base in the Midwest and beyond with this recording and his earthy, honest approach to music!
AKASA OPEN THE SOUND: Open the Sound is the debut CD from Akasa, a three-man trio from the New York tri-state region. They have been touring regularly in support of their new 14-track album. Akasa can be described as alternative rock mixed with many other styles such as jazz, funk, Latin and raga. In addition, they successfully incorporate world music instruments such as the tabla, the harmonium and the citra into some of their songs. The music of Akasa is energetic, mystical and sonic. The lyrics by lead vocalist Gerry Perlinski are insightful, heartbreaking and well arranged. Open the Sound has engaging guitar riffs and steady, solid drumming and bass lines. Akasa's dark brooding pop music has good instrumentation throughout and the world instruments add additional flavors to the arrangements. 'Quicksand' and 'The Messenger' are prime examples of the solid playing found on the CD. 'Landmine' has a funky sitar and a driving drum beat to create an intriguing combination. Overall, Open the Sound is an interesting mix of musical influences supported by insightful lyrics and solid playing.
ALAN BERNHOFT MRS. SIPPY BONE: Alan Bernhoft started drumming at age eight. Through the years, Alan has played in a variety of bands performing art punk, country, novelty, pop and rock. Bernhoft is a singer, writer, producer and multi-instrumentalist. Alan describes his music as "LA punk meets the Mississippi Delta Blues." Bernhoft is also influenced by classic rockers. His fourteen-track collection melds southern blues with a style reminiscent of the early Rolling Stones. The CD features plenty of crunchy guitars, hearty harmonicas and expressive, raw vocals. The production is stark allowing emotions to flow to the top. 'Baby Cigarette' is the energized opener, puffing along on rocking guitar leads and punk vocalization, a creative fusion of styles. 'I'm Crying Blood' has haunting instrumentation and vocals that grow more crazed as the story of lost love unfolds. Sorrowful, bluesy guitars lead to a pinnacle of pained, screeching vocals. 'Can't Stay Away' has a funky, groove combined with a punk attitude and a guitar jam. Funny enough, the song is not an angry punk song, but an ode to a fine girl. Mrs. Sippy Bone is an erratic yet entertaining collection of songs that uniquely marries soulful, blues with punk rock!
ALAN MORPHEW ALAN MORPHEW: Alan Morphew is a singer, songwriter and producer who also plays guitar, percussion and trumpet. Alan is joined by a troop of talented musicians who add additional guitars, bass, drums, piano, keys and a variety of string instruments to Alan's versatile songs. James Barton, who has worked with Clapton and Matchbox 20, mixed the CD. The disc features four fully produced tracks and one acoustic song. Alan is an expressive vocalist singing falsetto with power. Each song on this EP has something unique to offer. Rich, layered instrumentation blends well with Alan's varied singing styles and visual lyrics. Morphew's music is familiar reminiscent of 70's rock yet fresh with modern production and original arrangements! Alan Morphew is a multi-talented artist who will be touring solo in 2005 in support of his new album.
ALARIA TAYLOR UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Alaria Taylor is a singer and award winning songwriter. Alaria's vocals are rich in passion. Taylor holds a degree in psychology and has spent years in the theater and in opera. Alaria also plays guitar and piano although she does not handle these responsibilities on her twelve-track collection. Guitars, bass, drums and strings are played by other talented musicians. The CD was expertly produced by Grammy award winner Joe Puerta. Unfinished Business is a major accomplishment for this amazing artist. The CD captures part of Alaria's challenging journey to compose her own songs while working in the arts. In 1999, serious illness hindered the process for many months but spiritual healing and rejuvenation led to the completion of Taylor's debut. Her lyrics are personal, poetic and inspiring. The music itself is an eclectic mix of adult contemporary, blues, folk and pop. The CD opens with 'One Hour A Day' with its light, snappy beat but the visual lyrics are a serious call to prayer. The song features Robin Pluer singing backup who strongly complements Alaria's vibrant vocals. The track has a catchy groove and plenty of spirit. It is followed by 'Immunity' that starts off slow and dark alluding to a cold day at the end of December. A brief quiet before guitars, piano and rhythms increases the pace and the tone of Alaria's vocals turn hopeful. This song is a crafty contrast of images and tempos. 'It Hurts' has painful, visual lyrics combined with a compelling chorus and edgy instrumentation. Alaria Taylor's debut release is finished and it is a job well done!
ALCIBIADES JONES REFRACTION MIRAGE: Upon hearing the first few notes of the up-tempo 'Thermidor' I thought, "I am really going to like this band" and sure enough their innovative instrumentals won me over. Alcibiades Jones is an experimental trio noodling in the realms of funk, jam, jazz and psychedelic rock. Their music is vibrant and the varied break beats and melodic tempos are entrancing. Funky bass lines and dynamic guitars add color to their musical imagery. Refraction Mirage is their ten-track debut. It was recorded live with few overdubs allowing passion and spontaneity to flow. Alcibiades Jones is working on their next record and touring in support of Refraction Mirage. Track two, 'Honduras' combines heavy rhythms with dramatic guitars and a driving base line. 'The Villa Is Burning' is another smoking tune with fast furious guitars leads blending with a blazing tempo. At some point, the instrumentation slows down to explore a diversity of rifts before building up more momentum. Although I listed the first three songs as my favorites, I enjoyed the whole CD with its diverse, energized jamming and quality musicianship!
ALI HANDAL DIRTY LITTLE SECRET: Dirty Little Secret is the debut CD from singer/songwriter Ali Handal. This L.A. rocker describes her style as the Red Hot Chili Peppers hot tubbing with Ani DiFranco with Jimmy Page dropping in for a quick dip. Her techniques are influenced by both classic and contemporary musicians, especially Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page. Ali writes honest, powerful lyrics inspired by poetry, fantasy and life. Not only is Handal an accomplished vocalist, she has been described as a kick-ass guitarist, which she demonstrates on this CD. Ali is sexy, edgy and covers a wide range in her compositions. Handal is backed by solid musicians that strengthen this well-produced eleven-track CD. 'Slave to Ambition' opens with a funky lead and has biting lyrics about starlets hoping to advance their careers. 'Convince Me' has raw sexual energy and a great guitar hook. 'Indy,' a song about Ali's cat, is creative as she incorporates her pet meowing, purring and growling throughout the music. The title track is provocative and again demonstrates solid instrumentation. The secret is out; Ali's first CD is hot!
ALICE DESPARD VESSEL: Alice Despard is a singer/songwriter based out of Washington, DC. Alice also plays guitar and tambourine on her nine-track, solo CD entitled Vessel. Despard's poetic observations were composed over a period of time exploring a range of experiences and emotions. The CD was recorded with Mark Doyon in one long session allowing the moods and music to just flow. This format works well for Alice and her professional crew. Her songs are acoustic based with a city flair. The production is stark allowing Alice's lush lyrics and dramatic vocals to dominate, yet there is just the right mix of rhythms (bass and drums), guitars, a lap steel and an occasional tambourine. I liked the blend of edginess and soul on the first and last tracks best, although the album as a whole has a lot of offer. 'The Well' features interesting chord structures and 'Hold You Up' glimmers before and after the snappy hook line. Alice Despard is poised and her latest release is smart and significant!
ALIEN CANOPY PIPE DREAMS: Pipe Dreams is the debut CD from Long Island, NY-based band Alien Canopy. The four musicians of Alien Canopy have been busy in their music careers playing gigs and doing studio work. Alien Canopy describe themselves as a psychedelic retro/rock band that blends the great sounds of the 60s and 70s. They cite many musical influences to create their own unique sound. Pipe Dreams has catchy beats, spacey guitars, bold bass lines and precise percussion. Vocals, provided by lead-singer Alex Cuozzo, are solid throughout this well-arranged 12-song CD. Noteworthy tracks are 'Never Gonna Change' with its funky groove and hook line, '24/7' with its solid baselines and 'Ill-fated Planet' with its interesting instrumentation. 'Let it Go' showcases Allison's versatile vocals and the proficiency of the band. The song has world rhythms that are catchy. 'Tide' surges softly on delicate jazz sounds, smooth sexy vocals and powerful lyrics about broken relationships. This song is a deluge of gentle sights and styles. 'Absolutely Fabulous' is a delightful fusion of jazzy instrumentation and remarkable vocals. The song has an upbeat funky tone. Allison Tartalia clearly demonstrates that she is more than Ready to take the music industry by storm.
ALPHA CAT PEARL HARBOR: Pearl Harbor is the latest release from the adult alternative rock band Alpha Cat. This New Jersey band sites various influences such as Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Squeeze and REM. The group uses traditional rock and roll instruments interspersed with the vox, upright bass, tenor saxophone, mandolin and the trombone, which gives their songs an even richer fuller sound. Elizabeth McCullough who plays an array of instruments is also the main songwriter for the band. Elizabeth writes visual songs about life and personal experiences that are deep and meaningful. McCullough, like her predecessors, is able to "combine pop simplicity with a darker mood and sound." The instrumentation throughout Pearl Harbor is tight and proficient and blends well with McCullough's intriguingly haunting vocals. 'Something of Value' has a good groove, smooth vocals and clever musical accents. 'Monsters' has a scary funky tone with captivating guitar rifts and poignant vocals. 'The Truth' opens with grinding guitars and a steady solid beat revealing the story of self-deception. Pearl Harbor is an explosive CD that should put Alpha Cat at the forefront of the music scene.

'Buffalo Creek' flows on intense rhythms, riffs and vocals. American Minor is a talented and passionate band and their debut album takes classic rock to the next level!

Gorwell's delivery is a fine country twang of candid storytelling well accented with slide and picking guitars. His drawl is sweet and he harmonizes well with backing vocalist Jeff Samin. The best way to describe Andy's sound is the Rolling Stones go to Nashville. In fact, Gorwell's singing resembles Mick's and he pays tribute to the Stones with a concise cover of 'No Expectations'. 'One Night' opens with some great guitar work, a moving beat and rousing raspy vocals. 'Personal Manager' captures the essence of the blues with slow sexy guitar rifts, emotional vocals, subtle percussion and steady base. Fans of the blues are sure to enjoy Too Much Is Just Enough and Armand & Bluesology are dynamic!
ARMS OF KISMET CUTTING ROOM RUG: The multi-talented Mark Doyon is an author, label owner, producer, singer and songwriter. Mark also plays bass, guitar, keys, loops and the vox on his latest solo release. Cutting Room Rug is an eclectic mix of traditional rock structures with modern techniques amid hints of hip-hop, pop and 80's rock. Mark describes his diverse music as "postmodern pop". He writes clever, visual lyrics that are somewhat serious yet the musical arrangements are often playful, propelled by guitars, hooks and danceable tempos. Mark has a versatile vocal range from nasally to crisp and clear. The CD opens with 'Auriculara' with its stark instrumentation and vocals before the drum and other whimsical sounds pick up the pace. At the next bridge, the guitar joins in to support the hook line and lots of innovative textures, setting the imaginative tone for the following ten tracks. 'Outbound Train' has a snappy rhythm that creates the sensation of movement and abrupt stops very much like a musical subway. The vocals are layered as they coo about travel and meeting someone new. 'Coil' slithers on a slow groove combined with striking guitar work. Doyon's vocals start low just above a whisper and builds up as the song expands. Cutting Room Rug is an innovative mix of moods and styles that is gripping from the first evocative key to the last brooding note! ARMS OF KISMET EPONYMOUS: Eponymous is the debut release from multi-instrumentalist and author Mark Doyon who plays guitar, bass, organ, piano and loops on this innovative ten-track collection. Eponymous is expertly mastered by Jon Astley who has worked with Tori Amos and Pete Townshend. Mark sites Beck, Bob Dylan and many others as influences. Doyon blends a variety of genres to create postmodern pop. Each song has a different vibe and arrangements that fluctuate from rock, to Americana, to alternative, to psychedelic to hip-hop. Mark uses traditional instrumentation mixed with samples and other cool sound effects. The results are contemporary compositions with classic rock quality. Mark writes savvy insightful lyrics and uses a variety of vocal inflections to give each song a unique character and tone. The CD starts off strong with 'Karma Never Forgets' which melds a hip beat with haunting keys and guitar accents. The lyrics are intelligent and the hook line dreamy. It is followed by 'Beautiful Career' which has a catchy techno feel and an abrupt end. 'Alive and Awake' has a Dylan vibe vocally and lyrically, yet it has modern instrumentation and intriguing effects. The song just grabs and holds you with its groove and words. Although I favored the first three songs, the CD as a whole is appealing demonstrating that Arms of Kismet is a modern musical alchemist! ASS PONYS SOME STUPID WITH A FLARE GUN: Known for their wacky songs which explore the creepier side of the human experience, the Ass Ponys return with Some Stupid With A Flare Gun, the long-awaited follow-up to their highly acclaimed Electric Rock Music. The bands seems ready for a mainstream commercial breakthrough on songs like "Fighter Pilot," "Swallow You Down," and "Casper's Coming Home." Over the past twelve years the Ponys have refined a sound that is sometimes reminiscent of vintage Neil Young, classic 80's R.E.M. and Canada's alt-rockers, the Tragically Hip. While the tales of the fringe freaks and science fiction fantasy still abound ("x-tra nipple," "Astronaut," "Magnus") more serious themes are explored throughout the album's 12 fine tracks. The underlying message of hope prevailing over desperation found in many of the songs prove that the Ass Ponys deliver more than just a freak show.
ASTRELLA CELESTE PLAY ALONE: Astrella Celeste is the daughter of 60's folk legend Donovan. Growing up in a musical environment Astrella has had opportunities to work with many well-known artists. Celeste is currently touring in the UK and finishing up her debut studio album. We received a limited edition CD/DVD pack from Celeste. The CD showcases five sparkling songs. Astrella is an expressive vocalist who pens insightful, visual lyrics. Celeste's band and production are crisp and clean. Astrella's music orbits around the acoustic guitar but has a fuller sound thanks to her band and the use of various instruments including horns. Astrella's songs have interesting inflections and instrumentation that explore a range of soft moods. All five songs are smart and a good indication that her first full-length release will be impressive!
ASTROBLAST THIS WILL HELP YOU ON YOUR WAY: This Will Help You on Your Way is the second full-length release from Astroblast. Astroblast is an Austin, Texas band whose music is an interesting blend of alternative and "noise pop". Their sound reflects the varied tastes and backgrounds of the four key players. Astroblast's music mixes noises such as fuzz and feedback with frenetic keys, heavy guitars, driving rhythms and vocals that range from sweet to angst. Various techniques were used in engineering this collections from minimalist to layer and textured, thus this ten-track collection, which was produced by the band, is varied. Astroblast has been likened to My Bloody Valentine, Liz Phair and The Pixies. 'Conversation Hearts' opens the CD with some mysterious noise, a funky beat and kicks up the pace with trouncing guitars and lots of energy. 'What Goes Unspoken' showcases Jenn's varied and expressive vocal style with precise percussions, cunning keys and thrashing guitars. 'The Lows' is a slower paced song with smooth vocals, whimsical keys and soft subtle instrumentation. The vocal style and over all tone of the song reminds me of the John Lennon classic 'Real Love'. The track also has a thoughtful reflective mood that explains the lows. This Will Help You on Your Way is a diverse mix of alternative pop songs that are moody, energizing and intriguing! Astroblast is stellar!

BACK DOOR SLAM ROLL AWAY: When we saw Back Door Slam open for Styx earlier in the year we were impressed. Close your eyes and you could easily discern the stylings of Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughn present in the music. A cover of Cream's version of "Outside Woman Blues" was the convincing knock out punch that proved this trio are carrying on the mantle of authentic blues rock in this young century. A quick look at their press kit reveals a universal acknowledgment of the capacious chops of the group - Davy Knowles, guitar; Ross Doyle, drums; and, Adam Jones, bass - with glowing reviews by the handful. The truth is - the group hailing from the Isle of Man - were boys not very long ago and they presented a youthful front as they took the stage in Englewood, New Jersey. It was only nine years ago when group leader Davy Knowles was an eleven year old boy who heard Dire Straits' "Sultans of Swing" on the radio while in a car with his dad. The knowledge was transferred and the goal was set right then and there - and you can still hear Mark Knopfler's influence on the talented Knowles. So far we have Knopfleresque authentic blues - add the final ingredient of youth - a la the type of appeal John Mayer possesses - and you can see the heavy guns in Back Door Slam's arsenal. On the debut Roll Away the groups launches their craft as they travel to far distant shores to stake their claim as giants in the new world of music. "Come Home" is the incendiary opener where we are officially introduced to the musical and vocal abilities of Davy Knowles - and they are as pleasing and powerful as any Clapton or SRV track and you'll keep coming back to this one over and over again. "Heavy on My Mind" is a tad heavier with a nightmare theme and a wicked lead. Overall, the debut is a dream CD for fans of blues rock and guitar aficionados. The title track and closer is a thoughtful look at where these boys have come from - it's where they're going that now interests me and apparently scores of others as well!
BALANCE OF POWER PERFECT BALANCE: Balance of Power strikes the "Perfect Balance" with their fourth release. This melodic metal band has been together since 1995 with a few artistic changes over the years. This CD contains hard rocking powerful drums, fast furious guitars and exciting bridge changes. "Perfect Balance" has solid metal guitar solos and piano arrangements to support well written and engaging lyrics. Enticing hooks are sung by Lance King who has a strong and varied vocal style. Tracks 1, 2 and 4 were my favorites. "Shelter Me" is an awesome power ballad that should be at the top of the charts. Balance of Power has successfully blended melodic metal from the 80's into the alternative movement of the 90s to achieve the "Perfect Balance" on their latest of acclaimed CDs.
BARELY2MUCH GUAPOLINDA: Michael Guapolinda is an activist and founder of Barely2Much. Michael is also a vocalist and harmonica player who is joined by an able crew of artists. Barely2Much's music is an imaginative blend of progressive, roots rock and world. The thirteen tracks on this CD are light and energized but dig a little deeper and the songs are bold and serious tackling environmental, political and social issues. Guapolinda writes songs from personal local experiences as well as from a global perspective. His compositions are lush musical landscapes with surprising melodies and sound effects. Track one, 'Magazine Paradise', has a catchy groove combined with harsh commentary on paradise exploited by global tourism. 'Cobano' is a multi-cultural blend of rock and blues. 'Eco Town' has edgy leads and rhythms talking further about the impacts (black water) of tourism on a small village. 'More Michael Moore' has multi-layered instrumentation commending Michael Moore for exposing the government, followed by 'Bushwacker' criticizing America's current leadership. 'Happy Hour' is emotionally stirring in a jazz forum and '400 Billion' is a funky call for peace. 'Guapolinda' is a fusion of club music and rock and tracks 9 and 10 have diverse world tones. The last three songs explore various musical styles ranging from bluegrass to pop but Guapolinda's thorny themes remain a constant. Barely2Much is multi-layered, protest music at its finest! Also, 20% of CD proceeds will go to the enforcement and protection of environmental laws in Costa Rica.

Bastards of Melody's latest ten-track collection captures all of these elements as well as striking guitar work and reverberating beats. 'What's on your Mind' is the opening track and sets the high-powered adrenaline for the rest of the CD although there are some slower paces along the way. The song moves along on a rip roaring beat and grinding guitars. 'Erin's 25th' is a feisty beat laden track with stellar guitars and captivating melodic hooks. Versatility is a constant on this CD as Zoo and company cross and meld genres with ease and potency. 'Have Mercy' is another powerhouse with its dark bottom heating up angry guitars and Zoo's livid rap. The CD closes with 'Listen' with its heavy, animated instrumentation and some wild guitar work. On this track Zoo's vocals are smoother demonstrating his range as a rapper and a singer. Bazerk is dynamic and their latest CD is formidable!

Thistupidream is not an official theme album but the CD has murky dream logic of many moods and ideas. Lyrics are well throughout. Lines and vocals are sad and haunting on some of the tracks, which address various concepts such as disillusionment, bitterness, grief and wisdom. The instrumentation throughout the CD is tight and unified. Thistupidream is filled with strong rhythm sections, solid guitar work and interesting vocals. Beth's music is power packed rock with alternative edges and hints of the blues, ballads and punk. Thornley is supported by talented musicians on this eight-track collection. BLOW UP HOLLYWOOD FAKE: Fake is the second release from the ego-less Blow Up Hollywood. This ten-track CD does not list members' credits, their focus is on the music and lyrics. This contemporary rock band has been compared to early R.E.M, Radiohead and others. They write serious songs about life, death, politics and the world. The CD is well produced utilizing sparse electronics with acoustic and electric guitars, piano, synth, bass and drums. Fake explores a variety of moods and contemporary styles while occasionally utilizing classical and jazz instruments. Their songs are ambient, edgy, exploratory and surrealistic. I liked the CD as a whole but the first two tracks really grabbed my attention. 'Born' has a strong beat with dramatic keys combined with a striking vocal style and subtle sound effects. It is followed by 'Fake'. The title track starts off slow and soft as it gently builds up to more powerful, layered instrumentation and vivid vocals. BLUDSHOT ANOTHER DAY: Shawn "Bludshot" Tierney is the lead vocalist, composer and engineer for his band. His eclectic, sixteen-track CD features a variety of producers and musicians. Shawn has surrounded himself with quality players and producers thus the CD has polished songs with infectious grooves. 'Beautiful Day' is the opening track. It features a snappy, somewhat complex rhythm layered over suave rapping. I like the hook phrase about "a beautiful day and the sun shinning on my face" but as the tale unfolds the night comes and things go sour. 'Shake It' is a prime example of how Bludshot melds genres. Guitars, bass and keys start the song with a rock groove that reminds me of surf music. The song then shifts to an edgy rap beat as Shawn sings seductively. The song ebbs and flows in this pattern to a quiet end. 'Welcome To My World' blends rock instrumentation with hip-hop attitude. BLUESTONE CO. - BLUESTONE CO.: Bluestone Co. are manufactures of authentic American-styled rock hewing songs from the same quarry of blues and southern music that have served their myriad of predecessors well in the jam band genre. What sets these four talented musicians apart from the rest of the pack is that all of its members hail from Japan - about as far away from the southern United States as you could imagine. But, the former members of The Savoy Truffle - Toshihiro Sumitomo on Lead Guitar, Yoshihiro Ogasahara on Bass Guitar, Taizo Takafuji on Drums, and Taro Takagi on Percussion are obviously students of the sound and they are joined on this project by the notable American blues guitarist and fellow journeyman in the craft - Chris Duarte. It's not clear if this is a new band to replace The Savoy Truffle, or a new working project that will include Duarte on a permanent basis - but Chris wrote the lyrics to the songs on this record and serves as the de facto vocalist and front-man for this striking group that is helping to bridge the cultural gap between East and West with seven smoking tracks of blistering blues rock! All tracks on the disc are over five minutes in length and feature extensive, energetic jamming that is power packed with soaring leads and tight, lush licks dually provided by Duarte and Sumitomo. The instrumental opener "Silver Horse" sets the pace for the top notch musicianship you'll hear on the record as it runs through several refrains of galloping guitar licks that gets the blood flowing. "In The News Today" introduces Duarte into the fold with a bloody and bluesy tale of a broken home and a bruised world full of people who are experiencing the blues in the news. On "Me n' You" they kick out the jams in a song that combines the styles of Stevie Ray Vaughn and the Allman Brothers Band into a pleasing and solid rocker. With this debut CD Bluestone Co. have mined the blues rock genre well and together with the help of Chris Duarte they have sculpted a debut that should stand the test of time!

A techno groove layered with whispering vocals escalates into a hard driving beat and smoldering guitar leads, these patterns alternate until an abrupt end. The next track features a double-time, drum rhythm combined with electronic keys and more inventive instrumentation. These first two songs set the over-all tone of this innovative collection. Written In Code is a strong debut CD with it's original sound, combining lots of synthesizer effects with strong rhythms and subtle but heavy guitars leads.
