CD OF THE MONTH
He is now recovering from double-hip replacement performed in early October, but earlier in the year Nils Lofgren spent some time covering a mentor and personal friend of his - Neil Young on The Loner: Nils Sings Neil out now on Vision Music. Nils warmly re-interprets 15 of the most loved tracks in the Canadian's canon. Now, Nils has his sights set on playing at the Super Bowl in February 2009, and that's pretty hip!

E – NATIVE UNIT: Eric Kamen aka E grew up in New York City and after college lived in Europe for a time absorbing different cultures and music. Since a young age E has been involved in music and can play many instruments (guitar, piano, bouzouki, sitar to name but a few). E is also a producer who has worked with a multiplicity of artists in hip-hop, R&B and other genres. E aptly handles all the instruments and programming on his debut CD. His music is a magical blend of world instrumentation, modern production and diverse styling. E's twelve instrumentals are colorful and complex. The mood from song to song can range from determined to dreamy. The CD is varied yet cohesive as tempos and textures ebb and flow smoothly into each other. I appreciated the entire album but particularly enjoyed the creativity of 'Moshi Moshi, 'Take A Ride' and 'Mykonos At Midnight'. Native Unit is a musical soundscape melding the edge of hip-hop with the soul of R&B and flavored with sounds from around the world. E is for excellent!

ED HALE AND TRANSCENDENCE – RISE AND SHINE: Rise and Shine is the latest release from Ed Hale and Transcendence. Ed Hale is the singer/songwriter of this band as well as the guitar and piano player. Ed is a prolific writer and has composed over eight hundred songs since age thirteen. He also reworks many of his tunes. The Transcendence are strong musicians able to play a diversity of styles such as funk, hip-hop and electronica. Their music is a blend of many genres but can best be classified as modern alternative rock. They have an interest in international sounds from the Middle East, Brazil and West Africa. They subtly incorporate these influences into their own unique interpretations. Rise and Shine is a mix of progressive rock, world music and experimental sounds. Their songs are skillfully constructed with catchy hooks and flawless production. I found tracks one through three to be intriguing with vocals and music reminiscent of early David Bowie. 'Mother' has biting, bitter lyrics, edgy instrumentation and expressive vocals. Rise and Shine is aptly named as Ed Hale and Transcendence shine brightly track after track on this eclectic mix of music. This five-member band is currently touring the east coast including their home state city Miami, Florida.

EDGAR – SONGS FOR THE WORLD I AND II: Songs for the World I and II are two acoustic CD's each containing eight songs. Edgar is an experienced singer/songwriter from New Jersey who started his musical journey as a drummer. He has traded in his kit for a production chair and is the lead vocalist for his band. He is supported by talented players on guitars, piano and on some tracks bass. Edgar's music is a mix of classic rock, modern blues and folk. His vocal style has been compared to John Cougar and Elvis Costello. He sings with emotion and integrity. His poetic influences include Dylan, Springsteen and Chapin. Edgar writes honest reflective lyrics about a variety of topics such as poverty, empathy, heartbreak and love. Despite his serious subject matters his music has an optimistic tone that is persistent throughout all sixteen tracks. Recently, Edgar and collaborator Marc Battaglia sold a jingle/song to Bud Light Inc. On Disk One, I thought 'In a Carnival' was a powerful tribute to Edgar's older brother. The song captures the aura and festive tone of a carnival but is addressing loss, emotions and family reactions. This song is a brilliant blend of high instrumentation and low emotions, thus demonstrating Edgar's unique ability to blend optimism with spirited true storytelling. On disk Two I liked the upbeat playful vibe of 'Whole World Waiting' an inspiring anthem to rise above bad circumstances and finding a goal to strive and achieve. Spirited instrumentation and expressive guitars complete the package. 'Alien' is another emotionally inspiriting track about divine inspiration and living life to the fullest. This track is another prime example of the hope and confidence that Edgar conveys through his art. Songs for the World I and II is the ideal title for Edgar's songs which have universal appeal!

EJ QUINTET – SOMETHING TO SAY: EJ Hughes has studied tenor sax with masters and holds an advance degree in jazz. EJ is a passionate player who understands the magic of music. Hughes is an improvisationalist and instructor who has worked with a diverse range of people including the Disney Corporation and The Temptations. EJ wisely surrounds himself with a stellar band which includes Dave Frackenpohl on guitar, Kenny Banks on piano, Neal Starkey on acoustic bass and Wood Williams on drums. Something To Say features six originals and a creative cover of The Beatles' 'The Long and Winding Road'. The opening title track is slow and sultry. EJ's sax leads the song yet subtly exchanges notes with the keys and rhythm section. 'Something To Say' is a rich musical tapestry. 'Hope America' starts off with the sax playing part of the Star Spangled Banner before the tune moves in other directions by weaving various tempos and tones into the composition. The EJ Quintet is an innovative jazz band crafting intricate instrumentals on their noteworthy Something To Say CD!

EKOOSTIK HOOKAH – OHIO GROWN: Ohio Grown is the seventh release from improvisational jam band ekoostik hookah. This Ohio sextet combines psychedelic, rock, blues, funk, jazz and bluegrass to invent innovative intriguing songs. Ohio Grown was released on their own label Acoustic Productions Inc. ekoostik hookah is a grassroots organization that continues to expand their musical horizons. They play at least 160 concerts a year nationwide and they are now reaching out internationally. Their following continues to grow thanks to their self-promotion and energizing live shows. Ohio Grown was expertly produced by Chris Shepard a two time Grammy award winner. This ten-track collection is a cohesive mix of tight fluid jams and storytelling woven into a diverse musical tapestry. There are quite a few fun danceable tracks and the CD is filled with masterful musicianship. In addition to expert instrumentation the CD includes a few surprises such as horns, violins and choral arrangements. This CD has smoking guitars, thundering beats, funky bass lines, spirited keys and rich layered harmonies. 'Ranging River' clocks in at over nine minuets and is filled with magnificent guitar playing a mesmerizing beat and perhaps a nod to classic rockers. The opening and closing chords are reminiscent of the Dead and the midway guitar solo is wild like a Hendrix's rift. The song ebbs and flows with intense keyboards and overall is a furious free form jam. 'Music' showcases the horns, catchy percussions, whimsical keys and later smoldering guitars. This song is a hybrid of genres and dynamic playing. Ohio Grown captures the evolving development of ekoostik hookah a dynamic yet down to earth band!

EKOOSTIK HOOKAH – SEAHORSE: Ekoostik Hookah is an improvisational band that blends the blues, funk, jazz, blue grass and psychedelic traditions into their own special sound. This Ohio based sextet has built a formidable following as a result of their intense and musically charged live shows. This hard working band has played the east coast's Knitting Factory to the west coast's Great American Music Hall, thrilling audiences in-between. In addition, they have shared the stage with many well-known acts such as Little Feat, Dickey Betts and Willie Nelson to name just a few. Seahorse is their sixth release. This nine-track CD is filled with free form flowing jams, great guitars, precise percussions, wonderful keyboards and strong steady bass lines. Since various members of the band sing, the vocals are different throughout adding tone and uniqueness to the collection. Ekoostik Hookah is funky energetic music and Seahorse captures that vibe. In some ways, this CD is an epic novel, as the songs seem to flow into one another. The lyrics are poetic and deep, backed by intriguing instrumentation throughout. The title track clocks in at over nine minutes of funky guitars, driving rhythms and a good grove. 'Seahorse' is followed by the nice steady flow of 'Silver Train.' This CD is filled with musical variety and lots of jams that should appeal to a wide range of listeners.

ELENA POWELL – ALTA NOVA: Alta Nova is the third release from singer/songwriter Elena Powell. Elena grew up in a musical home and was encouraged to play classical violin at a young age. During her college years, Elena played the violin in bands but felt that something was missing for her in the classical genre. In the mid nineties she started singing and playing the guitar and keyboards. Elena stills plays the violin and its sweet sound is subtly incorporated into her well-crafted music. Powell's style is an energetic mix of retro meets alternative with a dash of pop. Funky beats, edgy executions and diversity are found on this eleven-track collection. Elena writes personal poetic songs and each song is a pleasant surprise. Moods and melodies are constantly shifting but Alta Nova is a cohesive unit. Powell has a wide vocal range and her delivery is diverse. Elena is supported by skilled musicians giving her CD a wide full sound. 'Waiting For The Revolution' is the strong opening track with its solid beat, innovative instrumentation, special effects and versatile vocals. 'First Girl on the Moon' has a dreamy vibe, whimsical lyrics and fluctuating vocals. 'After The Riots' is an energizing track with a angry grunge feel accented with a turbulent trumpet and high voltage vocals. Alta Nova is a creative body of work by the multitalented Elena Powell!

ELLEN ROSNER – COUNT TO 3: Count To 3 is the third release from singer/songwriter Ellen Rosner. Ellen also plays guitar on this twelve-track collection. Rosner is supported by quality musicians on a variety of instruments including the cello, violin, mandolin and Dobro as well as traditional rock tools such as the guitar, bass and drums. Polished production is also another plus on this win-win CD. Her songs are a blend of roots rock, blues, and country with a touch of pop. Ellen's music is mult-layered and the different instruments add precision and depth to her songs. This Chicago based musician is natural and down to earth. Her rhythms are organic and her vocals are clear and concise. Rosner has a deep powerful voice that is expressive and passionate. Ellen writes poetic lyrics with crisp arrangements. Although unplanned Count To 3 ended up as a theme album about break ups. 'First In A Series' opens with a funky rift that reminds me of a slide guitar, the song has a soft subtle beat. Ellen sings soulfully that "it only takes a moment to undo everything" as she laments later "I don't like it" with mournful instrumentation accenting and shaping this poignant song. "Empty Bottle" is full of powerful fretwork, solid rock beats and Ellen executing dynamic lyrics with emotion and passion. Ellen Rosner is a versatile vocalist who brings candor and zeal to her craft and three's a charm! (2,9) [USA/IL 2001 - web] (2002 Review by Laura Turner Lynch for Kweevak.com)

ELLERY – MAKE YOUR TROUBLES MINE: Ellery is a storybook romance in which a singer/songwriter named Tasha meets guitarist Justin Golden in college. They start composing and playing music together under the name Dividing The Plunder. Later, the collaboration leads to a marriage proposal and touring. The Golden's recently changed their group name to Ellery to reflect a new musical perspective. Ellery's sound is a blend of alternative folk and rock. Their songs are well written and can range from soft to soaring. Make Your Troubles Mine is a six song EP that is passionate and personal. Ric Hordinski, who also plays guitar and keys on the record, expertly produced the CD. Ellery has aimed for a bigger than folk sound with two guitarists and Amos Heller on bass and Josh Seukamp on drums. All six songs are poignant and Tasha who also plays piano is a controlled, soulful vocalist. The instrumentation is just the right blend of passive to powerful complementing Golden's expressive storytelling. Ellery is a talented group bringing a fresh boldness and perspective to folk-rock!

ELVIS L. CARDEN – SOUTHERN PRIDE: Elvis L. Carden was born in Atlanta, Georgia and started singing and playing at age nine. Elvis served in Vietnam where he first envisioned a guitar shaped house. Today, he has writing credits on over 150 songs and lives in his dream home. Carden pens honest, often heartbreaking lyrics. His songs feature traditional country guitars, slide and tempos. Elvis has the perfect deep and expressive voice for country. The seventeen-track CD opens strong with 'Junk Man' a down home blend of blues and country flavorings flowing over mid-tempo instrumentation. The storytelling is animated yet serious and sets the tone for the rest of the album. 'Tennessee Twister' has snappy guitar, piano and slide work but is the tale of a disastrous love. The CD closes with the spiritual 'Thank You Jesus', which is slow and sweet. Elvis sings with soul and is supported by a chorus of rich voices and subtle, twangy country instruments. Elvis L. Carden may be living in an old guitar but he breathes new life into traditional country music!

ELZA – ELZA: Elza is the self titled debut release from singer/songwriter Elza. She also plays the acoustic guitar and dulcimer on this ten-track collection. Elza began writing songs at age fourteen. Soon after she began to prepare for an operatic career and developed the skill of singing fluently in foreign languages. While training for the opera she realized that her actual dream was to write and record her own material. Elza has already received many awards and accolades for her live performances and music. Her song 'Take Me in your Arms' is included in the music soundtrack for Perfect Friendship. Elza has a wide vocal range that conveys her perceptive songs with richness and clarity. Her sweet expressive voice is being compared with Joni Mitchell. Elza wisely surrounds herself with other talented musicians who round out her thought filled music. 'Everything to Me' opens with fine guitar work that ebbs and flows into Elza's pure, strong vocals and it has a catchy hook. 'Don't Give Up' is an upbeat and hopeful song that reminds us that our challenges may be far from over but growth and good will be found along the path chosen. 'Flightless Bird' has soft subtle instrumentation and commanding vocals that soar. Elza is an accomplished composer and she has a beautiful voice to convey her songs that are meaningful, deep and poetic. Elza's debut CD captures the essence of this remarkably talented singer-songwriter.

ELZA – WIDE OPEN: Wide Open is a five-track EP from versatile vocalist Elza. Her childhood was split with time spent in Germany and Charleston, South Carolina. Thanks in part to her upbringing she is able to sing fluently in other languages and has developed a powerful stage presence. Elza started writing songs at age fourteen and later moved to New York to train for a career in the opera. Yet her first love of composing and singing her own material won out. Elza has the voice of an angel. Her songs are intelligent and executed with passion and force. Elza has an incredible range and her music magically blends, acoustic, melodic and pop. She has already won awards and some of her songs are being considered for major films. This EP captures the enchantment and grace of Elza's music. Each song demonstrates her breadth, of particular note is the first and last track on this collection. Elza soars on Wide Open.

EMILY HERRING – MY TEARS WILL BE RELIEVED: Emily Herring started playing guitar at age seven and writing and studying music at age twelve. Emily also plays the Dobro and the vox on her debut. The CD features a mix of her songs and traditionals. Emily's music is non-corporate country with a touch of southern blues and Tejano. Herring pens hard-hitting, honest lyrics. Emily's musical approach is stark and simple yet powerful. Her songs have no bass lines and only a subtle use of drums and on occasion the accordion along with the three key instruments that Emily handles. Herring's voice has a distinctive country twang that works well in the context of her compositions. The sassy 'What Will I Do?' and the edgy 'Has Country Gone to Hell?' were my particular favorites on this eleven-track CD. My Tears Will Be Relieved is authentic and original and Emily Herring is echoing country's past for future generations!

EMMY CERRA – METAMORPHIC: Emmy Cerra is a singer, songwriter and vocalist. Emmy also plays bass, guitar, harmonica and handles some production on her debut CD. Cerra is a self-taught, self-efficient, young musician making waves in the folk rock scene. Emmy sites a diversity of influences ranging from alternative to rock but the predominate genre on her eleven-track, debut release is folk. Cerra's music is raw-acoustic with few effects. Emmy sings from shear emotion as she tackles the serious topics of independence, lost love and starting over. Cerra pens poetic, potent lyrics that she belts out with feeling. 'Nicotine Princess' is a witty, well-written song featuring smoky vocals and chunky chords. 'Have A Good Life' is filled with cutting remarks, angry outbursts and vocals echoing over an edgy, acoustic rhythm. Metamorphic is an earthy record that is real and riveting. Emmy Cerra is a persuasive vocalist, playing vigorous guitars with lyrics that are penetrating, proving that she is artist with potential!

EMMYLOU HARRIS – HEARTACHES & HIGHWAYS: Emmylou Harris is a singer, songwriter and musician who has released over twenty albums and has had twenty-seven top ten hits, along with numerous side projects. EmmyLou's music is diverse ranging from country to rock and she is credited for resurgence in the bluegrass and Americana genres. Harris has collaborated with many artists and some of these gems are featured on Heartaches & Highways. EmmyLou is an incredible vocalist who sings with passion and has a remarkable range. Harris has always surrounded herself with first-class musicians adding to the drama and dynamics of her well-crafted songs. Heartaches & Highways includes hits but it is also a retrospective of pivotal moments in EmmyLou's career. The CD is beautifully packaged with liner notes that include a brief history and comments on the songs that were included in this twenty-track collection. The booklet also lists EmmyLou's discography and her approach to putting the CD together. Every song on the album is a winner. The CD opens with EmmyLou and her first co-writer Gram Parsons singing a stirring version of 'Love Hurts'. It is followed by 'Boulder To Birmingham' written after Gram's death and became the centerpiece of Harris solo album released in 1975. The duet with Roy Orbison is brilliant as is the following song with Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstandt. 'Michelangelo' which was released in 2000, is slow and sweet yet incorporates modern instrumentation into the mix. EmmyLou Harris is an artist that continues to evolve and Heartaches & Highways is a good, quick introduction to her past and present body of work!

EMP PROJECT – WHEREVER WE GO: The EMP Project takes its name from the initials of the last names of the group's principal members William Ellis (drums), Joseph Patrick Moore (bass) and Shawn Perkinson (guitar) but we could understand if they were going for Electro Magnetic Propulsion instead. On their second release EMP Project is electric, magnetic and they propel the listener forward. This CD features 8 jazzy and improvisational jams that lift and move at the same time. The opening title track of 'Wherever We Go' is a nice little traditional jazz trio journey that introduces the listener to just where this project can take them! This Atlanta-based trio explores the boundaries of modern post bop jazz with adept skills, quality production and enough musical twists and turns that guarantee wherever they lead you can be sure you'll be in for a surprise. Highlights of the trip include the frantic bass and guitar build-up on 'Chances', the explosive opening to 'The Day that Never Was', and the climatic way the music all comes together during the closing track, 'Synergy'. EMPYRIA – THE LEGACY: The Legacy is the third release from the progressive power metal band Empyria. The Legacy has a sound reminiscent of Guns and Roses but has its own distinct flavor. This CD is a saga of songs that smoothly merges into another as the tempo and tones subtly change. Steady strong percussion and bass lines back fast frenzied guitars. Throughout the CD are solid metal guitar solos. The lyrics by Mike Kischnick are forceful and frightening - addressing issues of darkness, uncertainty and the search for truth. The CD opens with 'Solace' flowing into 'The Lighter Side of Darkness (Part 1),' both have powerful instrumentation and the lyrics are riveting as they warn of blood red skies and being left behind. 'The Legacy' is also a powerful tune that leads the listener on a twisted, turning journey of bridges and musical jams. The acoustic Years Behind is a good close to this metal CD that has many moods.

ENODE – MEMORY STILL FRESH: Memory Still Fresh is the debut release from Enode pronounced "ee-no-day" which is Latin for overcoming difficulties. Ben Gitenstein is the singer/songwriter and guitarist who spent over a year composing the ten-tracks found on this CD. Various styles such as "ballads, manipulative power pop and tone shifts" were incorporated into his songs. After penning the lyrics and music he recruited two more guitarists who also play bass, a drummer, a pianist and a violinist to complete his sound. Each member of Enode has played with other groups and brings polish to this freshman effort. Enode's sound is a blend of rock and edgy pop. Ben writes insightful honest lyric and sings with emotion. 'Ballbearer's Confession' is a catchy yet dark muse with a steady beat and graceful guitars. It is followed by the more cheerful 'Driving South' with its happy harmonica that flows into a moving beat. Ben describes a journey and possibly a relationship as the track exits with a snappy guitar lead. 'I Want It All' is another beguiling song with energetic instrumentation and feeling. Memory Still Fresh is an inventive CD from up and coming indie artists Enode!

ENTRAIN – LIVE: VOLUME 1 RISE UP: Live: Volume 1 Rise Up is the first live release from the eclectic Entrain. Entrain already has five studio recordings to their credit and they continue to build their fan base by touring and via the Internet. Entrain's live shows are considered events where dance and positive vibes rule. Each of the seven members of the group has rich musical experiences and has worked with variety of accomplished players. Each brings broad musical ideas to the stage and to their songs. Entrain is in sync and unified by their art. This Martha's Vineyard based-band draws on a wide range of influences such as ska, reggae, calypso, jazz, blues and world. They beautifully blend African, Latin and Cajun sounds into their own unique style of music with heavy emphasis on drums. Entrain can be described as a jazz jam band but their songs are diverse reflecting different moods and modes. Live: Volume 1 Rise Up is an energetic eleven track collection that has a party vibe. 'River Run' flows on strong percussions, heavenly horns and positive upbeat vocals. 'Uncle Jolly' has a funky foot tapping beat, proficient horns, wild guitars and catchy vocals. 'Cohiba' opens with intriguing sounds and takes off on steady drums, it has a great world flavor spiced up by expert horns and great guitars. EPOXY – NOTHING ELSE: Nothing Else is the debut release from Epoxy, a three-man band based out of the Washington, DC area. Each member brings diverse and unique experiences to Epoxy. Robbie White has drummed and toured with other bands and has been a vital force in the punk and alternative scenes for years. Wade Matthews is a professional bassist who has played with many of the greats such as Springsteen, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Nils Lofgren. Brett Kimberlin is the lead singer, songwriter and guitarist for the group. While the others were playing out Brett was incarcerated for political activities. He was released by the efforts of Amnesty International and others. Epoxy is donating a portion of their CD sales to human rights causes. Kimberlin used the time in prison to write and play his music. Many of the fifteen tracks found on Nothing Else are biographical stories from Brett. Kimberlin's lyrics are understandably filled with angst, pain and torment but the instrumentation is wild and energized. Epoxy sound can be described as grunge meets punk. Their music has a defiant, heated insistence. Possible influences include Nirvana, the Dead Kennedys and the Germs. Epoxy's music has raw power and Brett's songs about alienation, bewilderment and conflicts are stark and honest. 'Amber' with a nod to Cobain, has animated vocals, dramatic guitar chords, power packed percussions and bass lines. 'Artwork' is a canvas of masterful bass sounds, colorful guitars and vibrant beats. Brett paints a dramatic picture with his words, which one must listen carefully to catch all the imagery. Epoxy is a sonic assault with intelligent insightful lyrics and commanding musicianship!

ERIC CLAPTON – BACK HOME: Since the 60's Eric Clapton has been esteemed as a guitar "god". During the first part of his career, Eric played in classic bands such as The Yard Birds and Cream. In the 70's through the present, Clapton has been a solo artist who has collaborated with many well-respected musicians including blues legend B.B. King. Back Home is a twelve track collection of covers and five EC compositions. The title states the intent of the record with themes revolving around family life and staying home, although Eric still tours regularly. The CD packaging includes photos of family and friends illustrating the idea that Eric who has been a long standing musical Journeyman is now a happy family man too. Back Home features an impressive list of diverse guest players ranging from Robert Randolph (dobro) to Billy Preston handling various keyboards. Some of the songs also have horn and string arrangements. I would describe the relaxed pace of the CD as adult contemporary with impressive guitar work. The tracks have a more reflective tone but the assortment of instruments keeps the songs interesting. 'So Tired' the opening tune penned by Clapton is a song that most weary parents will appreciate. Despite the theme, the song has a light, up-tempo rhythm melding with Clapton's signature guitar leads. 'Lost and Found' and 'Piece of My Heart' are songs written by other composers but offer more room for soulful, bluesy guitar work and rich instrumentation. Eric may not be breaking any new ground with his latest record but he demonstrates that he is still a guitar "god' who wisely picks the right people to play, produce and write with.

EXHIBIT F – BLUE IN THE BACKGROUND: Blue in the Background is the full length debut release from Exhibit F, a hard rocking band based out of San Diego, California. This eleven-track CD features edgy, energized songs with an angry tone. Lyrics deal with conflicts and have an ominous tone about them. The instrumentation is raw yet played with precision. This four-piece band is fronted by a high voltage female vocalist, Melle who has been compared to Blondie and Joan Jett. John Duffy on drums and Jeremy Turner on bass provided the pulsing beat and power of the band and Chris Lawrence smokes on the guitar leads. Exhibit F has a unique blend of melodic mixed with a very heavy sound. Their style draws from a diversity of genres including rock, punk, progressive and Emo. 'Down' is a punk powered track with an addictive guitar riff and quick, fiery vocals. 'Rest' starts off slow and sinister as it moves into dynamic drumming with dramatic pauses and then kicks into overdrive with heavy instrumentation and full throttle vocals. Exhibit F blends a variety of styles to create a heavy full powered sound filled with passion and pain!

EXIT 105 – EXIT 105 DEMO: Exit 105 is a five man band from the Jersey shore region. Their rocking sound is more Seattle based, in part to lead vocalist and songwriter Michael Strollo whose tone and fervor reminds me of Eddie Vedder. His bandmates on guitars and drums also bring power and passion to their music. Exit 105 is building a strong following. Their fans include Bruce Springsteen who invited them to play at the boardwalk at Giant Stadium as part of the 2003 Rising tour. We had the pleasure of seeing Exit 105 live at the Light of Day 4 concerts and they were impressive. Exit 105 has high energy and a commanding stage presence. They play with zeal and are able to capture an audience's attention with searing guitar riffs, captivating beats and expressive vocals. This seven-track demo is the studio versions of some of their live staples. I was missing the song titles but the first three tracks really grabbed my attention although I like all seven. The CD production is clean and every song has something to offer from animated rockers to mid-tempo reflective songs. Exit 105 is on the road to success!

EYES OF PANDORA – EYES OF PANDORA: Eyes of Pandora is the self-titled debut from Eyes of Pandora, who are songwriter/guitarist Robert Gueits and vocalist Susan Tojo. They are joined by talented players on piano, drums and bass. Eyes of Pandora are an alternative pop band from Miami, Florida. They have been compared with October Project and 10,000 Maniacs. Robert writes perceptive lyrics about social/political issues, relationships and heartbreak. He is also a accomplished guitar player. Susan is a powerful songstress and has a wide expressive vocal range. The musicianship is top-notch throughout this twelve-track collection. Their music is a blend of smokin' guitars, steady beats, harmonies and catchy hooks. There is a lot of energy and emotion that unfolds through well-phrased lyrics and solid instrumentation. Eyes of Pandora is flawlessly produced by Eric Alexandrakis. The CD opens with 'Welcome' where the listener is greeted with edgy guitars, a driving beat, souring vocals and great hooks. '1969' juxtaposes ideals and reality with a slightly Celtic flare. The song has power guitar cords, a groovy beat, and stellar vocals. 'Damaged' has an angry edge with intense guitars, a funky groove and forceful vocals. Eyes of Pandora is a progressive rock at its eye-opening best!

FADE TO BLUE – SENTENCED TO LIFE: Fade To Blue (FTB) was formed by five friends with diverse musical influences and interests. FTB is currently a quartet, growing their fan base and skills playing at various gigs in Ohio and beyond. FTB's sound is a blend of upbeat pop and rock, reminiscent of other classic bands such as REM yet original in their own right. Sentenced To Life is Fade To Blue's first full length release featuring eleven colorful tracks. The CD opens with the catchy, 'Live Your Life' that melds keys and effected vocals with an up-tempo rock rhythm. 'Complete' flows on a snappy beat and snazzy guitar leads that circle the hook "complete". 'You Girl' closes the album on a lively note with its spirited instrumentation and storytelling. Fernando merges R&B, world, eclectic Spanish and rock to create a dazzling collection of songs. His reflective lyrics about life, love and dreams are haunting and compelling. This CD has a broad range of elements, moods and deep tones. I enjoyed the entire CD but especially liked the first five tracks. 'The Jackal' has a mysterious dark feel. 'The Climb' is poignant. 'Away' is Lennonesque and beautifully accented with the lap steel. 'White Light' has a variety of sounds including some wonderful clarinet playing. 'Blue Room' has a steady beat that just flows. FIDDLERS 3 – ENCORE: Encore is the follow up release to Fiddler 3's animated debut. Since then the group has played at a variety of festivals and has appeared with The Chieftains, Natalie MacMaster and The Irish Descendants to name but a few. Fiddlers 3 is a family affair. The three siblings play violin hence the name of the band, while their Mom plays accordion and Dad provides percussion and sound effects such as spoons and washboard. Each brings a unique creativity, style and wit to the group. Their music melds Celtic folk and old time with the modern sounds of Ireland, Scotland and their home country of Canada. This twelve-track CD is vibrant and full of energy. This spirited collection of instrumentals will have your feet tapping and hands clapping in no time. Every song on Encore is diverse and spirited. The band's recommended favorites are tracks 1,8 and 10. I found it hard to choose a preference as every song is effervescent and fun. The production and musicianship is supreme from the first note to the last. This collection just sparkles! The band "dares you to keep your feet still" and they will win this dare every time. Enjoy!

FINESPUN – FINESPUN: Finespun is the self titled debut release from New York based quartet Finespun. The debut CD has been a great launching pad for the band that has toured the city club circuit and is getting Internet radio play. Finespun is working on a follow up CD due out sometime in 2003. These serious musicians write poignant poetic melodies and use thunderous beats and smoldering rock guitars to create powerful music that is almost hard-core but better described as alternative. Their influences range from jazz, to soul, to classic rock including Jimi Hendrix and John Bonham. These genres are a melting pot for the modern edgy sound that this band spins. These ten-track CD is a lively collection of well-produced well-arranged songs. 'Tuesday' opens with haunting guitars, dark ominous vocals and moves into a quicker paced bridge supported by powerful percussion. The story progress into a slower and than rapid vibe complete with a fast furious guitar solo and solid bass lines. 'Water Stains' has lyrics that are possibly full of double entendre. This beat laden track includes thunderous drumming, angry guitars and a primal beat. The multi layers of instrumentation and energized vocals make for a great alternative rock anthem. Finespun has woven an interesting tapestry of songs that blend fiction and fantasy with relationships and reality. Finespun has fused a powerful sound for their initial release!
