CD OF THE MONTH
He is now recovering from double-hip replacement performed in early October, but earlier in the year Nils Lofgren spent some time covering a mentor and personal friend of his - Neil Young on The Loner: Nils Sings Neil out now on Vision Music. Nils warmly re-interprets 15 of the most loved tracks in the Canadian's canon. Now, Nils has his sights set on playing at the Super Bowl in February 2009, and that's pretty hip!

GABRIEL JAMES – IN THE HANDS OF FOOLS: Gabriel James is a self-taught musician whose early influences ranged from Rickie Lee Jones to Nirvana. Gabriel plays guitar, sings, writes and produces. Four other talented musicians add textures and tones to this twelve-track collection in support of James. Gabriel's sound is a blend of alternative, funk, jazz, R&B and rock. Gabriel's arrangements are well constructed and his lyrics are articulate. The mood of the CD varies from funky to serious with each song offering something distinctive. 'Button Down' the opening track has a dreamy acoustic guitar and vocals combined with reflective, visual lyrics and subtle harmonizing vocals at the hook. 'In the Hands of Fools' features a snappy rhythm flowing over perceptive words punctuated by the trumpet. 'Swing' focuses on vocals, piano and a solemn stringed instrument reflecting on life with the hook sung in harmony. Gabriel James is clearly passionate about his art and his second full length release is full of promise!

GANDALF – GANDALF: Gandalf is the self-titled re-release from the rock quartet Gandalf. Gandalf was well known as the Rahgoos who played in various clubs in Greenwich Village, the Jersey shore and New York State. They built a strong following throughout the 60's which lead to an opportunity to record an album for Hot Biscuit, a division of Capitol Records. The Rahgoos were rushed into the studio and were asked to create a concept sound based on the song 'Golden Earring'. Their freshman effort was a mix of originals and rearrangements of other artist's music. Turmoil at Capital and other issues delayed the release and by the time the record was out the band was denigrating and the label did little to promote this gem. Yet, through the marvel of the Internet people found out about this spellbinding ten-track collection and generated enough interest for the re-release. This music was created in the heart of the psychedelic era and captures the magical sound of that time. The band blends fuzz guitars, echoes, the Hammond B3 organ, feedback and some intriguing sound effects to create an eclectic mix of songs. The CD opens with 'Golden Earring' the song that sets the tone for the album. Haunting almost tormented vocals meld with swirling, spacey instrumentation and imagery. Peter Sando the guitarist and one of the vocalists for the band composed 'Can You Travel in the Dark Alone' and 'I Watch the Moon'. His compositions are the highpoints of this captivating collection. 'Travel' sails on poignant keys, mysterious sound effects and a Middle Eastern flair. Harmonizing vocals and visual lyrics complete the magical effect. 'Moon' includes solid guitar leads melding with mesmerizing organs and a stellar harmonizing hook. Gandalf are musical wizards casting their spell for a whole new generation of listeners. Enjoy!

GARY YAMANE – VOICES IN THE WIND: Gary Yamane is an accomplished musician living and composing in Taos, New Mexico. Voices in the Wind is Gary's latest release and it is a beautiful blend of traditional and contemporary flutes. Yamane plays a varied selection of wind instruments such as the cedar flute, Balinese suling, silver flute and ocarinas. His songs span a wide range of styles from the sounds of the southwest to the world beyond. The twelve tracks are stories of life, nature and current events. This is eclectic mix that includes touches of jazz, classical, new age and Native American. Yamane accents his fabulous flutes with steady drums that echoes of the past and modern synthesizers that give his music a contemporary feel. 'Morning,' the opening track, is peaceful and promising like the start of a new day. 'Blue Silk' is smooth and flows in meditative tones. 'Return of the BuffaloSuite' is based on a poem from the Lakota nation. It is a fifteen-minute epic that brings the listener back to a fireside in which the legends of the tribe are shared. Voices in the Wind is an incredible instrumental CD and a fine example of the diversity of sounds and tones of the flute family.

GEOFF ACHISON – CHASING MY TAIL: Chasing My Tail is the latest CD from award winning blues man Geoff Achison. Geoff has a deep sexy husky voice so well suited to the blues and his magic fingers fly and caress the fret with raw energy and emotion. Geoff has been touring extensively for the past few years, in which two highly acclaimed live collections were gleaned. Achison returned to Australia in 2002 to work on this studio release. Chasing My Tail is a versatile recording featuring diverse styles of tradition blues, rock, jazz, funk, soul and string instruments. This CD demonstrates Geoff's growth and experimentation as an artist. Yet, it is still true to the commanding guitar based music that he has become so well known and respected for. This twelve-track collection features ten originals and two remarkable covers. The songs vary from gentle love songs to power jam blues. The production and musicianship by Souldiggers, Horns From Hell and the orchestras are skilled and dynamic. The opening 'Chance' is laced with heavy horns, textured tones, a steady beat and subtle but superb guitars. 'Begging Bowl' is a soulful song with sultry guitars and fluid instrumentation. 'Chasing My Tail' and 'Whipping Post' are creative interpretations of other well-known songs. The title track has a solid blues tone with funky bass lines and precise percussion. The Allman's classic is an orchestrated version filled with passion and energy and accented by Geoff's guitar and gravely vocals. Chasing My Tail brilliantly blends a variety of styles to create a flavorful mix of music in which Geoff Achison, guitar great shines.

GEOFF ACHISON & THE SOULDIGGERS – GETTIN' EVIL: Australian Geoff Achison is an award-winning, well-respected acoustic and electric guitar player. He is a blues-rock guitar virtuoso who has been compared with some of the greats such as Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Gettin' Evil is the smoking fourth release from this versatile musician. Geoff has a deep throaty voice ideal for this 13-track blues-based CD. He writes honest lyrics about life experiences such as 'Overtime,' the story of his former days as a factory worker. Gettin' Evil is jammed packed with excellent guitar solos and backed by the talents of Souldiggers. This CD has solid instrumentation throughout. 'Comin' ta Getcha' which opens the set has a great groove and sets the tone for the solid musicianship that is found on every track. The keys and guitar work on 'Tell me something I don't know' are grand. 'Jungle' and 'Adam and Eve' are accented with horns and congas that add even greater depth to these deep soulful songs. Gettin' Evil is highly recommended for fans of the rocking blues.

GEOFF ACHISON & THE SOULDIGGERS – LITTLE BIG MEN: Geoff Achison is a guitar master proficient on both acoustic and electric styles. Geoff can conjure up high energy rockers or beautiful, blues based ballads. Achison has a rugged vocal style that adds to the integrity of his music. He is an award winning player and Little Big Men is Geoff's impressive ninth release. Like some of his previous records, this fourteen-track CD features a wide range of innovations, moods, styles and tones. First class musicianship and clean production are also constants on Little Big Man, which is solid from start to finish. I particularly like the first three tracks of the album but each song keeps growing on you with multiple listens. Achison's lyrics are insightful including some caustic commentary about the world but Geoff speaks most powerfully through his expressive instruments. A quote from Jorma Kaukonen aptly describes Achison and his latest CD - "Geoff is one of the finest blues guitarists that I know with a completely individual style"!

GINA CATALINO – SWEPT IN SOUND: Gina Catalino is a hot new talent who's debut CD, Swept In Sound, was released in early 2007. Gina is a fresh-faced beauty with an equal amount of talent as a singer-songwriter that it's easy to be swept away by the whole package and that bodes well for her future because she'll hook you and reel you in one way or the other. Originally hailing from New Hampshire Gina brought her natural style and aspiration first to L.A. and then to the Big Apple where a lot of top level musicians would eventually join her on her first full-length release. The disc opens up with a jazzy one-two punch of "11:32 p.m." which tells the tale of her struggles in Los Angeles and "Foolish" which bops along on a hooky chorus. This record jumps around and delves into many genres from jazz, folk, blues and pop but it's all tied together nicely by Gina's plaintive and, at times, vulnerable vocals which are always soulful and sultry and delivered with a refined clarity that jumps out of the speakers. The best tracks are the numbers featuring the understated production which lets Gina shine on vox and acoustic guitar but there is tasty accompaniment on piano, lead guitar and horns that is threaded throughout the CD providing a uniformly cohesive sonic experience. Gina's lyrics are wise beyond her years, intelligent and insightful and her compositions offer a real personal glimpse into the life of this rising star. "Move Me" is a song about love and rejection that is the most moving moment on the album. "Nobody's to Blame" finds Gina excelling at the moody up-tempo rocker which has a Jewell meets Edie Brickell meets Nelly Furtado vibe that proves Gina Catalino is a force to be reckoned with. Check out Gina Catalino's debut today and you'll be swept up in the sound - and vision. You'll have no one to blame but yourself if you don't!

GLASS HARP – HOURGLASS: In the late sixties, Glass Harp was a rising power trio from Youngstown, Ohio. They were among the ranks of Cream and The Jimi Hendrix Experience and were often described as progressive. In the seventies, singer songwriter and guitarist Phil Keaggy left the band to pursue a solo career in Christian music. John Sferra the drummer and Daniel Pecchio the bassist continued playing. In the late nineties, Glass Harp performed a few live shows together and realized that the chemistry that they had at their origin was very much alive thirty years later. All three who were quality musicians from their early start have matured into masterful players. Hourglass is a self-produced collaboration. All three wrote songs for this sixteen-track collection and all share the responsibility of lead vocals. Better yet are their rich harmonies found throughout this diverse original material. Versatility melds luxuriant textures, tones and paces on this CD that is both rocking and reflective. Many of the songs are spiritual and insightful yet always colorful. 'Seven In A Box' the opening track includes innovative guitar leads, complicated percussion, beguiling bass lines and powerful vocal blends. It is a great rock song and blends into another powerhouse entitled 'What's In Your Heart'. More smoldering guitars, sizzling beats and now dazzling horns make this a masterpiece. 'That Way' features more dynamic instrumentation, expressive vocals and passion at a slower speed. Hourglass captures the timeless synergy that was and is Glass Harp!

GLASS HARP – STRINGS ATTACHED: Strings Attached: Live with the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra is the incredible new live album from Glass Harp. The CD features the legendary and world-renowned guitar-player and singer/songwriter, Phil Keaggy, reunited with his band mates from the late sixties and early seventies. The epic 2-hour plus set was recorded on one night in October 2000 in front of the band's appreciative Youngstown, Ohio, hometown audience. Strings Attached presents much of the Glass Harp catalogue and several of Keaggy's more recent solo works, often with full-orchestral accompaniment. Fans familiar with Keaggy's live performances will know that he has also mastered an electronic device called the "Jam Man" which he sometimes uses to layer guitar leads, vocals tracks and rhythms, often creating a mesmerizing and engaging performance. This effect is best represented on "From the Beginning," "Shades of Green," and "True Believer," which has become a regular set-closer over time. Not to be outdone, the band and orchestra blend and complement each other nicely, creating powerful, intriguing music. Phil's guitar playing, as always, is masterful and exciting. John Sferra provides powerful, precise percussions and Daniel Pecchio adds commanding, bold bass lines. The CD is a great mix of songs scanning three decades of diverse music and ideas. Lyrics from each of the band members are deep and introspective. The music is inspiring and compelling. The 27-piece orchestra, led by conductor Isaiah Jackson, adds even greater depth to the tracks. This two-CD, 27-song set is a fun and energetic collection that has an ever hopeful message. Strings Attached is a great primer for new listeners to familiarize themselves with the legendary Glass Harp and the wonderful music of Phil Keaggy.

GLENN TILBROOK– TRANSATLANTIC PING PONG: Glenn Tilbrook is well known and respected as the lead vocalist, guitarist and co-writer for the band Squeeze. Tilbrook has also worked with Elvis Costello, Mark Knopfler and many other music legends. Transatlantic Ping Pong is his second solo release since Squeeze disbanded. Glenn's sophomore release blends the tradition pop-Squeeze sound with rock, pedal steel leads, funk and honky-tonk with plenty of tongue-in check lyrics. This twelve-track collection is diverse and dynamic featuring a combination of up-tempo songs and some slower compositions. Glenn is in great voice and his singing is just as crisp and controlled as ever. 'Untouchable' is the opening track that emulates the successful Squeeze formula in a new way. Spirited keyboards layered with strong guitar leads, a solid beat ramble up to the catchy hook line and later a nice piano solo accented with a tambourine. 'Hostage' has a Nashville-rock-vibe utilizing the pedal steel combined with Tilbrook's guitar and expressive vocals. 'Hot Shaved Asian Teens' will grab your attention with the first vibrant guitar chord and funky beats. The lyrics are humorous and the repetitive title line and grooves are great. 'Reinventing The Wheel' features whimsical yet dynamic instrumentation spinning into Glenn's versatile vocals and harmonies. Transatlantic Ping Pong is melodic pop at its best. Glenn's signature tenor has found a new talented group of players to soar with!

GLOVEBOX – GLOVEBOX: Glovebox aptly describes their music as "electroganic super pop". Glovebox is their self-titled debut featuring twelve eclectic originals and a remix. Their songs are diverse, melding electronic loops with live guitars and rhythms. Glovebox's sound is a mix of modern production with retro dance beats. Their chord structures are brash and Mishka is a skilled, versatile vocalist. 'In The End' is memorable with its danceable pulse, sound effects, varied vocals and a catchy chorus. '$10 Whore' opens with dark, dramatic keys before quickly kicking up the pace. Mishka sort of talks the storyline into the soaring refrain with singing, echoes and long held notes. The keys return with programmed effects to add density to the song. It is followed by the addictive 'Flying Free', which is heavy on mixed rhythms layered over a funky 70's groove and a captivating refrain. Glovebox is a bold, innovative band and their debut release is a perfect fit for any dance party!

GOD'S FAM – GOD'S FAM: God's Fam is Adrian Brice and Jermaine Day. Both are emcees, evangelists, producers and writers. Their music can best be described as holy hip-hop. "A Brice" and "Maine" are committing to spreading God's good news through their songs. They are currently living in the south but originated from Buffalo, New York, which may account for the edginess of their evangelical raps. 'One Accord' features a steady rhythm melding over sound effects with a hopeful rap that "He is life". 'Radical Praise' has clapping, accented beats and scratches that blends with talk with harmonies. 'Shake It Off' showcases innovative programming and keys combined with scriptures and a hook line of encouragement. God's Fam's three song EP is potent!

GOTHIQUE – SONGS OF THE NEW MILLENNIUM DARK AGES: The Gothique CD is part of a bigger multi-media project. It is music based on the fictional book entitled "Book Of Omens", which is an ominous look at the calamities facing humanity if we don't turn away from environmental destruction, greed and wars. The fifteen apocalyptic rock tracks on the CD are a sample from a three volume set expanding on the ideas from the book and concerns about the world we are currently living in. Gothique is a hard-hitting record featuring a mixture of male and female singers representing a variety of genres ranging from Goth to new age. The songs and stories are a serious wake up call for change. The music is interesting and Gothique is an innovative concept album with a profound purpose. If you are looking for media (books and music) with meaning look no further than "Book of Omens" and the Gothique Songs Of The New Millennium Dark Ages CD, the titles says it all!

GRATEFUL DEAD – FILLMORE WEST 1969: The Grateful Dead were musical innovators both in live and studio settings. They were one of the first to utilize 16 tracks in production and took improvisational jamming to a whole new level. Playing suites of songs were common for The Dead in the late 60's allowing ample room for exploration and experimentation. Lyrist Robert Hunter added poetry to the music of The Grateful Dead, writing complex words full of imagery. Fillmore West is a timeless deluxe three disk set recorded at the legendary California venue February 27 - March 2, 1969. The CD is beautifully packaged with a 72-page booklet with essays, history and photos. The set includes a mind blowing 55 minute 'Alligator/Caution' jam (disk 3) that is a gem along with a dark, dreamy version of 'Dark Star'(disk 2). Classics such as 'Morning Dew' and 'Turn On Your Lovelight' (disk 1) are clearly evolving and would become future crowd favorites. Fillmore West is an incredible piece of history, demonstrating that even in their early years The Grateful Dead were passionate and proficient musical pioneers!

GREG GRANT – AFTER THE CRASH: After the Crash is the sophomore release by singer/songwriter Greg Grant., who also plays alto sax and acoustic guitar on this nine-track collection. Grant originates from New York and started playing music at a young age. He was inspired by the Muppet Zoot to learn the saxophone. For a number of nomadic years he traveled and was exposed to a variety of musical styles that he has incorporated into own sound. Greg has settled in Northwestern Montana and recorded After the Crash at the Straw Bale Studios, an off the grid solar-powered studio constructed of straw bales. Greg writes intimate introspective songs that are musically pure and simple. He sings from the heart and beautifully blends diverse genres such as jazz, folk rock, classical and world. Fans of the Dave Matthews Band might appreciate Grant whose voice reminds me of Dave's and many of his tunes have that distinctive international sound. Greg's songs about love and life run smoothly into each other as tones and moods subtly change. The opening track 'In Love Again' opens with good guitar rifts, insightful lyrics and a soulful sax. 'Serpent Lady' has a mysterious Spanish feel with flamenco guitars and a sassy sax. Greg is a multi-talented artist and After the Crash captures his varied skills and styles in a collection of free expressive songs.

GREG MCLEOD – GUNS INTO GUITARS: Greg McLeod is a singer, songwriter, guitarist, keyboardist, drummer and producer. He is also a painter. Greg was born and raised in the United States before moving to Europe. McLeod incorporates his diverse life experiences into his own eclectic brand of rock that he blends with the blues and folk. McLeod pens intelligent lyrics that are politically and socially charged. Greg's poetic words flavor laid back melodies and spicy guitar leads. 'Waiting For The Rain' and 'Terminal Blues' that are featured on the second half of this twelve-track collection were my favorites. I liked his rich, visual lyrics layered over blues beats and soulful guitars. McLeod, a multi-instrumentalist, explores a multitude of musical textures and tones on this CD. Moods range from caustic to hopeful. Greg is a vocalist who sings from the heart and brings passion to his music. Guns Into Guitars is a strong lyrical CD and McLeod inspires his listeners to think on a deeper level!

GREYSCALE – MONOCHROMATIC: The name Greyscale describes the group's assorted musical influences, diversity and varied cultures. Their songs are a colorful blend of pop, rap, R&B and rock. The Greyscale core is Walter Taylor, III – an actor, vocalist and vox player and Tenia Taylor a model, singer and vox player. Tom Green on bass, Ryan Hayes on drums and Matt Zierden on guitar create the up-tempo rhythms that keeps all thirteen tracks on the Monochromatic CD moving. All five are passionate about their art and crafting songs that expresses their creative differences within the band. Their music melds modern instrumentation with dueling male and female vocals. The tempo is usually upbeat as it sways through changing musical styles. Both Walter and Tenia are strong singers solo or in harmony. The CD we had did not list the track titles but I particularly liked the first and eighth track demonstrating that Greyscale is off to a good start!

GROOVATRON – YES HAVE SOME: Yes Have Some is the second studio release from jam band Groovatron. In 2002, Groovatron performed over 140 shows in 14 states enchanting audiences in their wake. In addition, they have received favorable press in Relix Magazine and JamBase.com thus rousing more fans. The six members of the band played in other groups prior to 1997, when these friends from high school decided to form Groovatron. Groovatron melds rock, funk, jam, reggae and jazz into fun spontaneous music. All six members are credited with writing and vocals. Their influences include Frank Zappa, Phish and the Grateful Dead. As individuals they are skilled musicians and as a band they have synergy. Their music is a magical mix of danceable vibes, quirky lyrics and feisty jams. This sextet has plenty of chemistry and versatility. This fourteen-track collection is tight. High points are 'Shaunza Night Sky' which opens with a groovy Garcia like guitar lick, a solid beat, interesting bridge changes, spacey instrumentation and a comical hook line. This song like many of the jams on this collection meander through diverse instrumentation and different genres. 'El Guapo' has a subtle Spanish flamenco sound, it than moves into a bolder beat with furious horns and an avante-garde jam that reminded me of Roundabout by Yes. This is prime example of the broad sounds and emotions that Groovatron can capture in just one song let along an entire CD. Yes Have Some is going to leave listeners wanting more Groovatron!

GROOVSKI– GROOVSKI: Groovski is the self titled release from Groovski a four piece band based out of New Jersey. This revolutionary troop blends rock, punk, melodic pop, new wave and funk to assemble a unique twelve-track collection. In addition to an exclusive vibe their lyrics are about forty percent Polish and sixty percent English. Yet the energy and emotion of this quartet is apparent in any language. Adam Malec is the lead vocalist and provides the "booming reverberating" bass that is central to Groovski's sound. He is joined by Tim Borkowski and Leslie Blatteau on dueling guitars. Bogdan Chudy contributes tight drumming throughout. Although there are traces of other styles in their music, Groovski creates a very different genre that is hard to pinpoint but fun all the same. The CD opens with 'Groovski vs. Godzilla' with its catchy guitar chords, a driving beat and male/female vocal mixes. Monstrously good. It is followed by 'Glupi Stamos' with its captivating instrumentation, thumping beats and plenty of raw energy. 'Zbiornick' is another track with intriguing instrumentation that grabs the listener's attention. The different musical influences and tones that Groovski combines makes for a entertaining and rocking selection of songs. Groovski knows how to groove!

GROOVY JUDY – GROOVY JUDY: Groovy Judy is the latest self-titled release from Judy Gascoyne. Judy is from the San Francisco area and has incorporated the regions vibe into her own unique blend of modern 60's music. Her influences include The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix and Sly & The Family Stone. Judy, the singer/songwriter of The Groovy Judy Band, is also the guitarist. She writes spirited songs with positive messages that talk about acceptance, love and healing. Judy's band completes the fun, funky feel of this eight-track CD. Groovy Judy opens with 'Forgive' which has a good beat, solid guitars and heavenly horns. 'Peace and Love' is a soulful tune sung from the heart with solid instrumentation. Judy's latest release is energetic with good guitar leads, steady drums and tasteful horns and keys. GRUBSTAKE – DYNAMITE & OTHER INVENTIONS: Grubstake's core is a trio focusing on guitar and drums but their latest CD includes cameos from producers and other musicians. Fun instruments such as an accordion and the kazoo are part of this twelve-track, plus 4 song bonus collection of rockers and ballads. Grubstake's sound is an eclectic blend of Americana, boogie, lo-fi punk and rock. They used an eight track analog to record Dynamite & Other Inventions, which is their third, self-produced release. They site a diversity of influences from Beck to Neil Young that shrewdly find their way into Grubstake's songs. Their music is vaguely familiar yet unique, perhaps a punky Rolling Stones in the Delta swamps. The CD opens with the haunting 'Whispering Blues'. The song has muted vocals expressing concerns about privacy invasion and schizophrenia. The instrumentation jumps from snappy to tense before fading into 'Letter Left to Write'. The second song blends striped down, rock instrumentation with lingering, languid vocals. 'Party with Lawyers' has erratic yet catchy tempos combined with heavy guitar work and edgy vocal inflections. Grubstake serves up a varied menu of raw, sizzling rockers to slow cooked blues. Dynamite & Other Inventions is original and flavorful!

GWEN JENNIER – YOU'VE GOT TO BELIEVE: You've Got To Believe is the debut release from singer/songwriter Gwen Jennier. Gwen has worked as both a solo artist and in bands. She has been composing music since a young age when she first picked up a guitar. Gwen's songs are an eclectic mix of contemporary Christian, rock, pop, county, folk and even a dash of techno. This ten-track collection is filled with visual images of nature, animals and God. Jennier's lyrics are very spiritual addressing the joys, sorrows, wonders and doubts of life. Gwen's music is honest and encouraging. The production is crisp and clear. Jennier is supported by other talented players who add to the depth and richness of her sound. The CD starts off strong with the title track. It has a catchy beat highlighted with Gwen's versatile lively vocals. Joyful instrumentation and harmonizing backing vocals add to its charm and sets the tone for the following songs. 'Rocking Horse' has country flair thanks to the splendid pedal steel, down-home instrumentation and twangy vocals. You've Got To Believe blends a quite reflective tone with an on-going up-tempo beat that is inspiring and enjoyable!

HACHA – HACHA: Hacha is the self-titled CD from Hacha - a southern "chant" rock band. Hacha is four longtime friends who have played hundreds of live shows perfecting their craft and establishing a solid following. This nine track collection is written and produced by the band and has a raw experimental flare that is just plain fun. Hacha builds on the foundation of great rock music from the 60's and 70's, including jam bands such as The Allman Brothers. Their sound is reminiscent of the Black Crowes since Hacha's lead singer Chris Bell who is also the rhythm guitar player, sometimes sounds like Chris Robinson. Charles Etienne provides upbeat percussions. Lead guitar and bass are expertly handled by Harold Papineau and Mike Murphy, respectively. Although Hacha's sound follows the road of classic rock music they take off on their own unique journey. A good example of this is track two entitled 'Borrowed Time' that has Led Zeppelin like riffs but soon drifts off into original solid rock guitar solos. 'Ladia-Mine' has a lot of interesting bridge changes, a blasting beat and explosive guitars. 'Take a Bow' starts off with some weird Hendrix like stuff and flows into a beat laden part that meanders into some cool spacey like guitars. Hacha, which is a combination of the names Harold and Charles, is alchemy of classic rock with a hard modern edge, a funky flare in an original formula.

HAL CRAGIN – WET GRASSY GROUND: Hal Cragin is a multi-instrumental composer, singer and producer. Hal is an experienced musician who has played bass for They Might Be Giants, Iggy Pop, Sarah MacLachlan and many others. Wet Grassy Ground is Cragin's second solo project. It is a fourteen track vocal and instrumental collection stylistically suggestive of early Air and Cornershop. The CD features entrancing instrumentation washing over subtle vocals. Hal crafts complex, catchy rhythms flowing through innovative arrangements. The CD as a whole is compelling but the following three listings were my favorites. 'Cabillaud' features a haunting lead layered over a gentle beat. Next the tempo slightly increases into a funky groove before ebbing back to a softer beat as it pours into the second song. 'Jacques Cousteau' has electronic, atmospheric sounds, a steady rhythm and soft reflective lyrics. 'Love Letter' has a sexy groove dancing with whispering vocals that tell the story of lost love. Hal Cragin is a talented musician crafting multi-layered compositions that are well produced and grow on you with each successive listen!

HELLO BLUE – WHAT IT TAKES TO WAKE UP: Jason Fox and Ned Moore have been friends since high school and have been writing songs together since 1997. In 2000, they formed Hello Blue with both playing guitars and handling vocals. They are joined by Matt Sandstedt on bass and Ryan Dodge on drums. Hello Blue's sound is a mix of emo and rock with tracks ranging from high energy to melodic. What It Takes To Wake Up is their first full-length release and features ten songs, many of which are compositions that they have been playing live for quite some time but the songs have changed and evolved in the studio environment. Hello Blue's arrangements include experimental bridge and rhythm changes in assorted soundscapes, some rocking, others more like hypnotic trance. HETH – CLEAN: CLEAN is the sophomore release from Heth a four man outfit fronted by singer/songwriter Heth. In addition to vocals, Heth plays electric and acoustic guitars as well as the Korg and Roland synthesizers. Heth's style is rock and pop mixed with 80's synths and loops. Heth played the violin at a young age but was greatly influenced by classic rockers such as Neil Young and contemporary groups such as REM and Radiohead. He incorporates these styles into his own original cohesive six-song collation. CLEAN is expertly produced by Heth and Jamie Candiloro who has worked with REM and Courtney Love. Heth has crisp clean vocals and the overall vibe is upbeat and positive even when addressing lost love as in 'My Headphones', which includes visually expressive lyrics, textured guitars, seasoned synths and a subtle beat that completes the story's soundscape. 'So Easy' flows on a pulsing beat and dramatic pauses combined with ambient keys, layered guitar chords and smooth vocals cascading into a catchy hook line. Heth is a animated singer and composer and his latest release is refreshing and clean!

HIGHWAY 9 – WHAT IN SAMHILL?: What in Samhill? is the debut release on Epic by New Jersey's Highway 9, who have been a popular staple in the Jersey shore region in a variety of incarnations such as Samhill & Mr. Reality. In October, they shared the stage with local legends Bruce Springsteen and Bon Jovi for a concert benefiting the victims of the Trades tragedies. Highway 9 has created their own distinctive "American alchemy" of music that echoes of The Eagles, The Wallflowers and Counting Crows. What in Samhill? is expertly produced by Peter Collins who has worked with the Indigo Girls and Jewel. Gordon Brown writes eloquent lyrics and is the author of all twelve tracks found on this comprehensive collection. His songs range from beautiful ballads to hard driving rock. Vocals and instrumentation throughout this CD is proficient and powerful. Highway 9 has melodic hooks, great guitars and soulful bass and percussion. The music is cohesive, energizing and moving. 'Sadly' is a guitar fueled poetic serenade that has a driving beat and flows with passion. 'Tug of War' is a brash ballad that runs on pure musical fuel. 'Casanova' is suave with sexy guitars rifts, edgy bass lines and solid percussion. Highway 9 is an exciting road trip of styles, moods and emotion. Enjoy the ride!

HILL OF GIANTS – EUREKA: Hill of Giants represents a musical and faith based friendship that started in childhood. Bob Globus – lead vocalist and guitarist, and Tony Cario, drummer and keyboardist – have been playing music together since they were kids. They are joined by Alison Globus, a polyrhythm bassist, and Brad Vetch, a pulse style drummer to form the alternative rock band Hill of Giants. Their music ranges from up-tempo rockers to spiritual ballads. Their twelve-track CD is raw yet purposeful with lyrics about faith and God. All four-core members consider their music their ministry. 'Only One Solution' is the opening song featuring a snappy rhythm and vocal inflections blending with hard-hitting guitar leads. 'The Word Love' alternates between a slower more reflective tone and builds momentum to more powerful leads before returning to the slower pace and repeating the cycle throughout the song. Eureka is one of two recent releases for Hill of Giants who plan to forge ahead crafting music with praise and purpose!

HOBBIT – ALL FOR THE ONE: All For The One is the fourth release from theatrical rockers Hobbit. This four-man band weaves the traditions of UK and US melodic rock into a tapestry of fantasy rock. Their vocal style and complex creative arrangements are reminiscent of classic Yes. All For The One is a concept album based on the Lord of the Rings trilogy. This CD is an epic including 32 tracks of majestic music and narration. The album unfurls like a book and captures the ebb and flow of the Tolkien classics. After a brief verbal opening the CD starts off with 'Everywhere' and 'In the Shire' two cheerful songs that shares the wonders and joys of living in the shire. As the CD progresses darker forces unfold into dramatic rockers. 'Nazgul' with its wailing guitars and a threatening beat announces that the black riders are bound for Hobbiton Square. A scary track followed by two melodic reflective songs. Attention to details and special sound effects makes this collection a magical experience. 'Wind and the Way' is a prime example of first class instrumentation and subtle sounds such as birds singing at the end of the song. 'Rivendell' creates the illusion of a grandiose kingdom with flutes, harmonizing vocals and silky smooth guitar and bass lines. 'Mines of Durin' borrows from melodic metal to forge a feeling of doom and darkness with heavy guitars and a weighty bass. 'Destiny Chaser' is the story of Eowyn, featuring poetic lyrics, mystical instrumentation and a great hook line. 'Last to the Havens' is the insightful closer with narration to end the story. All For The One is an amazing concept album showcasing strong vocals and stunning instrumentation in diverse, multifaceted arrangements. Hobbit takes the imagery and wonder of the Tolkien novels to the next level!

HOLLINS STEELE – SONGS FROM VANDERBILT AVENUE: Dayna Hollins is a classically trained vocalist and Benny Steele is a jazz drummer. The two met at an east coast music conservatory and became friends and later business partners. Together they own and operate The Steel Factory, a recording studio located in Brooklyn, New York. Both are apt at production and decided to collaborate their unique skills into a musical project. The finished product is Hollins Steels' thirteen-track debut CD. Their sound is 80's inspired pop/rock with crisp production, complex arrangements and strong rhythms. Dayna pens insightful lyrics about personal experiences and relationships. They utilize classical musical textures with modern mixes to craft a sound that is distinctively their own. Songs From Vanderbilt Avenue features a professional lineup of players who have worked with various artists ranging from Match Box 20 to Steely Dan. The beat heavy 'Tongued Tied' and the orchestrated 'Falling' were the standouts on this quality CD. The instrumentation throughout is interesting and varied. Dayna is a strong, versatile vocalist and the musicianship is matchless. Hollins Steele is power pop with a purpose!

There are two guitars, a bass and a drum. Female vocalist and guitarist Ellen Willwerth also plays harmonica, flute and mandolin enriching the band's style as a whole. HY80 are proud fans of 60's and 70's classic rock, which is incorporated into their own unique sound that also includes a touch of jam, pop and punk. Another way to describe HY80's music is intense folk, they pen insightful lyrics combined with lively instrumentation. Their self titled, eleven track CD starts off strong with 'Let It Go', 'Out of Mind' and 'December's Song'. These three songs pack a big punch with dueling guitars, heavy rhythms and jams. The rest of the album explores a variety of styles and some probing instrumentals. The CD production is uncomplicated allowing the potential of the band to shine through. HYDRAULIC WOMAN – GLAD GAME: Glad Game is the new release from Hydraulic Woman fronted by singer, songwriter and rhythm guitar player Kristen Schuldt. Six other talented musicians on guitars, bass, drums and harmonica join her. Glad Game is a commanding blend of rock, blues, acoustic and electric. Her style is reminiscent of Bonnie Raitt, the Indigo Girls and Susan Tedeschi. Kristen writes intimate lyrics about love, lust, loss and growth. Her vocals are a spectrum of highs and lows, power and grace. She can sing with a hard edge or a sweet, smooth flow. Kristen's songs capture a variety of moods that are conveyed through soulful guitars, balanced bass lines, steady percussion and textured vocals. This nine-track collection is masterfully produced with vocal blends that brilliantly create the illusion of harmony with just Schuldt. All the songs are energetic and filled with raw emotion. 'Wait' opens with stark blues laden guitars, a steady sexy beat and questioning vocals that are a hook from start to finish. 'Hard to Say Goodbye' also starts with striking guitars a solid grove and expressive vocals that have a sugary edge. Instrumentation throughout is impressive and the band has lots of synergy. HYPERVIGILANCE – HYPERVIGILANCE: Paul Wasser is a musician and owner of Gargoyle Recording Studios. GRS offers a full range of audio services that can be customized. The company also has a library with music that can be used for radio and TV broadcasts. In his spare time, Wasser heads up the band Hypervigilance. They are currently a studio group creating a hard rocking sound that can range from classical to jazz. Their music is a fusion of diverse influences and styles. Kweevak received an advanced demo of songs that Hypervigilance plans to release on a forthcoming album. The CD had eleven, captivating instrumentals. The songs feature heavy guitar leads, strong rhythms and diverse jams and bridge changes. The tracks are evolving and improvisational with a modern flair. The production was clean for a demo and I anticipate that the full-length release will be an exciting and carefully crafted collection!
