ICTUS – PUNK ROCK FOR GIRLS: Ictus is a trio based out of the UK where they are building a strong local following. Aaron Murray (guitar), Chris Byrne (bass) and Adam Gent (drums) all sing and all three bring energy to their fifteen-track debut CD. Ictus' music is polished punk with rock and pop influences. Punk Rock For Girls features songs that were written over a five year period, exploring various life experiences and heartbreaks. 'On and On Again' is the opening track with its hard driving pace and rapid-fire vocals that are quite catchy. 'Beautiful Mistake' flows on reflective storytelling layered over subtle guitars, keys and rhythms. 'Can't Get Thru 2U' is a creative blend of styles by opening with a punk pulse melding with horns. The song than moves into a more pop format with the horns still playing a predominate role and than melding into rock instrumentation. Ictus is an inventive band crafting music that is lively and original!

II BIG – IN A MENDOCINO TOWN: II Big is a five man band fronted by brothers Aubrey and Tom Hansen who are the singers and songwriters for the group. The five members of II Big and their guest players come from a variety of musical backgrounds but they are united in crafting classic rock with a big sound. II Big's style is rock with a touch of blues and country that is mature yet fresh and new. II Big have toured extensively, developing a strong live show and have shared the stage with many musical legends including Blue Oyster Cult, Jeff Healey and Styx. In A Mendocino Town is their fourth full-length release featuring a dozen solid rockers. Aubrey and Tom's vocals blend well but are also strong independently. Rhythms are robust, guitar leads range from subtle to sizzling and the keys add plenty of flavorful accents. 'If I Can't Be Your #1' is the opening track with blazing leads and beats but the vocal styles have a twang of country that keeps the mix interesting. 'She's No Stranger' is a solid rocker galvanized by the guitars. 'Rebel (Going Home)' has a more serious tone alluding to the Civil War with some rebels coming home and others who don't. 'Once Upon A Time' has a catchy rhythm and hook along with animated keys and lively guitars. II Big has the right blend of classic rock with a modern, passionate edge!

INDIEGO MUSIC CENTER – NEW MUSIC SAMPLER VOLUME ONE: New Music Sampler Volume One is a compilation of indie releases. Indigo Music Center in connection with cdstreet.com "promotes, markets and distributes independent music. They provide secure order processing for artist websites and sell music items for many tastes and interests." Volume One is a 15-track epic filled with solid rock material merging with a variety of genres such as alternative, jazz, and pop. I enjoyed all the diverse music on this CD. All the tracks are professionally produced and feature intriguing lyrics, solid instrumentation and a wide range of vocal styles. Volume One opens with established singer/songwriter and guitarist Nils Lofgren, who is well know for his work with Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen. 'Puttin Out Fires' is a smoking example of Nil's potent and prolific guitar style. This song rocks with a solid beat and souring guitar solos. Lofgren is book ended by the power trio known as RIFT. 'Party On The Autobahn' has fast paced guitars, a driving beat and moving vocals. Volume One also showcases a number of strong female singers fronting bands or working as solo artists. Lynn Frances Anderson sings soulfully on 'Beautiful Morning' that includes great guitar work and fine fiddles. It has a rocking beat with a touch of country and sultry vocals. Volume One is a viable venue to further indie music in a fun and diverse format. I hope that this will be one of many more collections put out by Indiego Music Center.

INSECT SURFERS – MOJAVE REEF: Mojave Reef is the third release from Insect Surfers. The band originally started out in DC in 1979 during the heart of the punk era. In the 80s, they moved to the west coast. From the beginning they have been captivating live audiences with their unique blend of modern and classic rock sounds. The Insect Surfers have shared the bill with Chris Isaak, The B-52s and others. Their innovative instrumentals have been featured in films and videos. The Insect Surfers have been described as "the Clash meets the Ventures". Their originals capture both the edge and energy of punk with a respectful nod to timeless 50s and 60s stylings. The current four-man line up creates original musical montages. Their compositions revolve around dueling guitars and a dynamic rhythm section. A Cornucopia of influences including surf, punk, psychedelic, modern rock and jam make this sixteen-track CD a winner. Besides diversity the Insect Surfers incorporate subtle sound effects such as revving cars, waves and wolves to give tracks event more texture. Mojave Reef is salient and fun from start to finish!

Beautiful Boredom is IOU's debut ten-song collection and album number two is already in the works. The CD opens with the title track that combines a hard, driving beat with rocking guitars and modern vocal stylings. The song progresses its way into and out of the catchy "shine" refrain. J.A.M. AUTHORITY – FEAST OF JAM, JELLIES, PRESERVES: J.A.M. Authority originated in the early 90's when three friends from Long Island, New York started playing together in a progressive hard rock band. Over the next decade, they developed synergy as a group by tapping into each other's musical energy in the tradition of great jazz bands. Although their music has jazz roots their primary focus is pure rock. J.A.M. Authority states that "they play only improvise music because they're too lazy to write or work on songs." Their seven-track collection features guitar, bass and drums. The band is tight and their music is in a constant state of evolution with radical tempo, key and mood swings. Experimentation and various musical textures set the overall tone of this CD, which could be consider one long jam as each song flows seamlessly into the next. The music is spontaneous and the musicianship is first rate. If you are looking for flavorful jams that uphold the customs of jazz, than indulge in the J.A.M. Authority's latest CD!

JAMES KENNEDY – PATCHWORK: Kweevak has received several great CD's from the multi-talented James Kennedy and his band. Therefore, our expectations for his latest release PatchWork were high and we were not disappointed. James' eight instrumentals are a tapestry of diverse styles, tempos and tones. 'Here's My Heart' is a more serious tune with the vibrant violin melding with dramatic guitars. 'Charlie' is a spirited song followed by 'Old Movies', which has a nostalgic feel to it. JAMES KENNEDY – ROCK 'N' ROLL HEART & TOO MANY PICTURES: Rock N Roll Heart & Too Many Pictures are two recent releases from multi-instrumentalist James Kennedy. James is a composer, producer, vocalist, guitarist and bassist. Kennedy has written scores for a number of independent films and video projects. In addition, his music has been licensed by major corporations such as 3M, Disney and Muzak. James a seasoned musician has been playing since a young age and he studied blues and jazz at the University of Iowa. Rock N Roll Heart is an ode to classic rockers such as Cream, Genesis and the Four Seasons to name some of many. It is a diverse blend of psychedelic sounds, driving guitars with acoustic tones, powerful drums/percussions and hip base lines. 'Victory and Honor' is a sixties like instrumental with stirring guitars, weird electronic tricks and a steady solid beat. Far out! 'Michael's Back Door' follows with creative instrumentation that reminds me of avant-garde bands such as Yes. Imaginative bridge changes and first class musicianship carries this ambient song to a satisfying conclusion. Thus, setting the tone for the next four well-crafted and inventive tracks. Too Many Pictures was composed like an impressionistic painting. In other words, the music is a blend of world and jazz in a soundscape of varied styles, textures and tones. James mixes traditional sounds and modern jazz to create a unique genre referred to as midwestern jazz. The musicianship is masterful on all six songs but I really enjoyed the ebb and flow on 'Summer Rain' a soft fluid instrumental with a subtle beat and fine string work. The music gently washes over the listener like light refreshing rain. 'Bailaora Misteriosa' is a saucy song with Spanish overtones, sexy guitars, funky beats and some cool sounds from the electric violin. It is a poignant and flavorful mix. James Kennedy clearly demonstrates his versatile talents on these two unique CDs of rock and jazz-fusion sounds. Either disk is a winner!

JAMES KENNEDY – THE MAN BEHIND THE CURTAIN:James Kennedy is a 2004 Kweevak Viewer's Choice winner who is well respected in the United States and Europe. The Man Behind the Curtain is James' thirteenth release. This eight-track CD is a diverse collection of mostly instrumentals utilizing a variety of styles including blues, bossa nova, modern jazz, pop and rock. Kennedy and his band are musical wizards, crafting a unique sound that combines the guitar and violin in primary roles enhanced by a strong rhythm section. 'Terra Cotta' is the colorful opener, featuring progressive rock guitar leads layered over dramatic beats. 'Dave's Not Here' melds a poignant violin with delicate guitars, enhanced by subtle sound effects and a dynamic rhythm. 'Turn Around' slows the pace a bit as Catherine Lawson on the violin creates a jazz feel before letting the track flow into a different direction. Matt Alles on bass and Joe Patterson on drums add an eloquent groove to the arrangement. 'Café Talk' continues the musical, jazzy conversation with contemporary guitar leads talking with the violin and the percussion keeping time before the song whispers to a close. 'Raw Deal' showcases James guitar chops with some heavy licks strengthened by a brawny beat and some funky effects. 'Bare Bones' is a country-blues song with a twist. The guitar and rhythm section build the backbone of the tale as the violin tells the rest of story. The song reminded me of the improvisational classic 'Little Red Rooster'. 'Just Close Your Eyes' is an instrumental soundscape with diverse tempos, textures and tones. 'Silhouette In Time' is the dynamic closer featuring vocal blends with modern rock/pop arrangements. James Kennedy and his band are magical performers with plenty of musical tricks up their sleeves!

JAMES KENNEDY – VAGABOND: Vagabond is described as a traveler that weaves tales. In many ways, James Kennedy fits that description in a positive way. Vagabond is a mostly instrumental voyage. James is joined by Catherine Lawson on electric violin and Matt Alles on bass. Joe Patterson and Masahiro Iwasaki share the responsibility of drums and percussion. Each of the eight tracks on Vagabond is rich and textured and flows smoothly from one mood to the next. I enjoyed the CD as a whole expedition and in particular the lush instrumentation on 'Time Walker' and 'Long Lost Love'. 'Brazil Bound', also of note has an interesting world sound, accented with subtle percussion, a cheerful electric violin and catchy chord changes. James Kennedy continues to create innovative progressive music that blends a timeless classic sound with modern tones. JED – SYNESTHESIA: Jed formed in 1996, since then they have been building their fan base with extensive touring and some good press. Jed has been compared to Tool but their diverse, intense style is uniquely their own. All five members are accomplished musicians. Jed's music is dark, hard rock yet their songs have melodic undertones. The band uses terms such "non repetitive- hook laden and multi-faceted" to describe their unusual approach to music. Words that aptly describe the emotion and range of their latest eleven-track CD. The record starts off with "Madmartigan" a disturbing yet dramatic piece that sets the tone for the rest of the CD, which is filled with enigmatic imagery. JEFFERSON STARSHIP – WINDOWS OF HEAVEN: As many of you know in 1965, Paul Kantner and Marty Balin formed a band called the Jefferson Airplane. In the 1970's, the group evolved into the Jefferson Starship and for the next three decades saw a number of personnel and stylistic changes in addition to hits. Throughout their diverse history their songs have focused on science fiction, politics and relationships. Their thought-provoking lyrics, heavy bass, funky guitar rifts and intriguing keys are also part of their legendary sound. JEN CHAPIN & STEPHAN CRUMP – OPEN WIDE: Open Wide is the collaboration of Jen Chapin singer/songwriter and vocalist and Stephan Crump, a composer and bassist. This ten track minimalist collection is a result of a 1998 chance encounter at a soundcheck. Jen is the daughter of well-known songwriter Harry Chapin, who was the co-founder of World Hunger Year. His daughter carries on the vision as an active board member. Jen's mom was also a social activist and both have strongly influenced Chapin's visions, which are conveyed through her deep reflective music. New York is Jen's home base but she has toured internationally as a solo artist and with bands. Stephan Crump is respected as a jazz musician but he too has played around the world with a variety of artists. Jen writes philosophical songs that include harmonies that on one level are very personal but on another universal. Her vocals are a contrast of rough edginess blended with a touch of sweetness.Open Wide is an innovative musical experiment. The only components on each song are vocals, acoustic bass and an occasional sound effect. This bold attempt works well with Stephan's subtle accents and Jen's singing. Chapin's lyrics stand out on this simplified format. 'Portrait' and 'Gold' are eloquent visual poems. The CD has a variety of moods and flavors that touch upon jazz, Latin, blues and even funk. Open Wide is a unique collection that showcases two talented musicians in a distinctive musical setting.

JERRY GARCIA – GARCIA PLAYS DYLAN: Jerry Garcia is a musical legend in his own right yet he pays tribute to Bob Dylan another mythical musician/poet on this two-disk, fifteen track CD. Garcia had been quoted saying that he loved playing Dylan songs "sometimes I feel like I'm right in those songs. 'Tough Mama'… songs I wear real well, feel like I could have written them". Jerry brings his own magical touch and experimentation to Bob's classics. The song selections range from live gigs dating back to 1973 to 1995 the year of Jerry's death. The tracks differ in sonic quality depending on the original tapes and the venues, which ranged from intimate clubs to large stadiums, but all have something special to offer. There is a rare version of Jerry with Legion Of Mary performing a haunting version of 'The Wicked Messenger' and gems such as 'Tangled Up In Blue' from The Jerry Garcia Band. The CD features unique musical collaborations with Garcia at the helm including the Dead covering 'Visions of Johanna', 'The Mighty Quinn' and 'It's All Over Now, Baby Blue'. JERRY GARCIA: THE JERRY GARCIA COLLECTION – LEGION OF MARY – VOLUME 1: Jerry Garcia, best known and loved for his pinnacle role in The Grateful Dead was also involved in a variety of other musical projects throughout his career. In late 1974 through 1975, Jerry was performing at the Keystone Berkeley and a few other venues in an improvisational band called Legion of Mary. The group's short history is somewhat murky with different players coming and going but the innovative jams were captured on tape and are now available. Volume 1 features two disks with a total of fourteen songs, the shortest clocks in at 7:54. The incarnation of Legion of Mary on this set include Garcia on vocals and guitar, Merl Saunders on keyboards and vocals, John Kahn on bass, Ron Tutt on drums and Martin Fierro on sax and flute. The live music explores an assortment of styles from funk, jazz, R&B to rock. The songs are an interesting mix of covers including Dylan, Motown classics and Ray Charles. Garcia had such a signature guitar style that he somehow made other people's songs his own. The other musicians of Legion of Mary are also apt and able adding their unique contributions to Jerry's legendary leads. The CD sound is quite good considering the age of the tapes and the technology of the times but the magic of the music shines through. The CD package also includes a booklet with photos, stories and some great quotes. Martin Fierro recalls that at first Jerry didn't really know how to play jazz but little by little the band influenced him and he had such a good ear that he could pick up stuff immediately. The collaboration is impressive, innovative and spontaneous. For Garcia fans in search of "new" material, Legion of Mary's Volume 1 is a find. Enjoy!

JIBILIAN/GLASS – GALAXY RODEO: Galaxy Rodeo is the latest release from veteran Detroit rockers Gary Jibilian and Todd Glass. This dynamic duo has fashioned a vibrant seven-track collection of instrumentals. Their songs are full sounding thanks to Gary's expertise on the NS Stick. The NS stick is a string instrument that combines the deep beats of the bass and the traditional sound of a guitar. Thus, it sounds like Jibilian is playing two instruments simultaneously. In a short time, Gary has mastered this complex instrument. He accounts the easy adaptation to the fact that he has been tapping bass for ten years. Todd provides precise clean percussion throughout. Their drum and bass combination is a far cry from beat laden dance music and much closer to improvisational rock. Jibilian and Glass are a tight twosome with a single purpose of creating captivating music. They have succeeded with the unique mesmerizing sounds of Galaxy Rodeo. JOE COLLEDGE – CONVENT STATION: Joe Colledge is a classically trained vocalist, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Joe has played in a variety of bands from metal to pop. His influences included classic rockers such as Tom Petty and John Mellencamp. Not only did Colledge produce Convent Station but he handled the majority of instruments including guitar, bass, drums and strings. Bob Wilhalme handles piano on a number of tracks adding drama to honest, compelling songs. Joe used an eight-track recorder to engineer his straightforward arrangements. There are few over dubs but some layered vocals. Joe pens songs that have catchy hooks and soothing melodies. He refers to the project as a demo but its organic quality brings integrity to the music yet offers room to grow the songs as well. This twelve-track collection is a personal record and a response to the events of 9/11. Colledge recalls seeing the New York City skyline every morning as he drove to work. The dramatic change of view after that fateful day inspired two of his most powerful songs, 'American Song' and 'Serenity'. They are heartfelt, acoustic ballads that are sung from the heart. 'Best of Me' has a foot tapping tempo, subtle chords and soft, meaningful vocals. Joe Colledge is a cutting edge singer-songwriter and Convent Station has plenty of potential!

JOE COLLEDGE – TABLE FOR ONE: Joe Colledge goes back to school for his sophomore effort and graduates to a higher level of musicianship on his 2007 release, Table For One. The opener "Best You Ever Hard" is one of JC's best tracks yet incorporating some of that horn-filled Jersey shore vibe into the mix coupled with an anthemic and determined vocal delivery. "Burden" is the fourth song and it's message gets a little weighty with its heavy harmonies. "Vacancy Sign" is a welcoming rocker that finds Colledge channeling a Jaggeresque vibe with a memorable and accessible guitar lead and keyboard coda. In fact, Joe and the Stone Caravan will be touring Europe and the east coast of America in support of the double CD. Disk two is a mellower, reflective collection. It is described as a stripped down setting with acoustic guitar, piano and stand up base. The two CDs combined offer 21 originals and two covers that demonstrate the diverse sounds of Joe D'Urso. 'Freezing Dreams' is about a relationship disintegrating but also an upbeat anthem to following your dreams. I enjoyed the flow and pace of this track. This song also has some flashy guitar chords and of course a rock solid beat. 'Air' has a caustic tone with a cutting beat, sharp percussion, piercing guitars and raw expressive vocals. Disk One truly captures the synergy and prime sound, which has become Joe and Stone Caravan's signature sound. 'As The Rain Falls in Dublin' opens with crisp, clean piano chords that cascades into deep strong reflective vocals relaying visions of a late night in Dublin. 'Missing' is a haunting tale of a lost woman as told through Joe's passionate vocals. Poignant pianos and lingering beats add to the sad drama of this song. Both Sides of Life brilliantly balances Joe's varied musical styles from the driving rock sound of Stone Caravan to his more weighty storytelling. Enjoy!

JOE D'URSO & STONE CARAVAN – ROCK AND ROLL STATION: Rock and Roll Station is the most recent release from roots rocker Joe D'Urso & Stone Caravan. Joe has loved music from a young age and has been influenced by many classic rockers such as Dylan, The Beatles and Springsteen. D'Urso has been writing songs and poetry since he was eight but did not learn to play the guitar until his twenties. Despite his late start, he is a competent rhythm guitar player and surrounds himself with other talented musicians known as Stone Caravan. Joe has deep, earthy expressive vocals and is a wonderful storyteller who writes introspective lyrics about love, friendship and the past. Rock and Roll Station is a concept record in which twelve songs are played over a two day period on a radio station. The CD has twelve tracks each with DJ intros. All the songs on this collection are first-rate but of particular interest is 'Rock in the Sun' with its shiny gritty vocals, steady beat and the first of many grand guitar parts. It just glows like a bright sunny day. 'The Ballad' is a great example of Joe's visual lyrics interspersed with great instrumentation. The song has a country flavor that adds to the mood and atmosphere of the tale. My favorite track is 'Rock and Roll Call', a brilliant summary of rock and roll's history complete with a catchy hook "Bruce is the Boss . . . and Dylan's the Muse". It also includes subtle musical style and vocal changes that further explain rock's varied past to the 14-year-old caller who has just discovered rock. The guitar, beats and bridge changes are exceptional. Rock and Roll Station deserves to be all over the airwaves as Joe D'Urso & Stone Caravan are American rock at its honest, synergetic best!

JOE GRUSHECKY – FINGERPRINTS: Fingerprints is the first solo release from music veteran Joe Grushecky. Joe has been an active member and innovator of the music scene for many years. Grushecky is an accomplished guitar player and singer/songwriter. Joe was also involved in the production of Fingerprints. Grushecky leaves his mark on this very personal collection of songs. This fourteen track CD has a diverse mix of styles from hard rocking tracks to beautiful ballads. Joe writes insightful visual lyrics and topical songs. His music has touches of Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan but is still uniquely his own. Joe's music is pure rock and roll and is delivered with gritty genuine vocals and polished guitars. Grushecky surrounds himself with other accomplished musicians to complete this well-rounded, well-produced CD. 'You and Tonight' is a solid rock track with great guitar rifts, a driving beat and intense vocals. 'It's a Crazy World' has strong guitars, compelling vocals and a relevant message. 'Spanish Blood' is slow and bittersweet with haunting Spanish guitar accents. Fingerprints is a striking collection of rock songs by a man who continues to leave his musical impressions for all to enjoy.

JOE GRUSHECKY AND THE HOUSEROCKERS – TRUE COMPANION: True Companion is the latest release from Joe Grushecky who is based out of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Joe and the band are musical veterans bringing expertise and professionalism to all projects. Grushecky has gained a reputation for thought provoking lyrics about everyday life often focusing on the working class. He considers this eleven-track collection a follow up to their breakout record from 1981. Although Joe and The Houserockers have put out other CDs since then True Companion is a return to their musical roots. The sound is pure rock and roll with heavy guitars overlayed with keyboards, bass, percussion and harmonica. Subtle influences include R&B and classic rock from the 60's and early 70's. Yet a shot of youthful perspective is also part of the mixture as Joe's teenage son who also plays guitar co-wrote the last two tracks on this CD. Grushecky states that these new songs are ideal for live shows. They are overflowing with energy and first class instrumentation. Although the CD is expertly produced the songs have plenty of potential to expand in a spontaneous live setting. 'A Long Way To Go' is authentic rock at it best. Opening with an expressive harp and Joe's gritty genuine vocals the song rocks on with its concrete beat and soaring guitars. The title track is also dynamic showcasing sizzling guitar work and more solid rock sounds. 'The Shape I'm In' is a prime example of Joe's and also John Grushecky's insight into the working class as they talk about too much work, too many bills and not enough play. Joe Grushecky and The Houserockers are the essence of rock and True Companion confirms it!

JOE MYSTERY GROUP – CLASSIC ROCK FOR THE NEW MILLENNIUM: text The Joe Mystery Group started in the late 70's as an undiscovered cult band. After disbanding in the late 80's, Joe Mystery and Emilio Reeves went their separate ways to pursue steady employment. The two recently reunited and put together this ten-track collection. Joe handles the guitars, keyboards, drum programming and backing vocals. Emilio is the deep dark vocalist. Their music is a blend of psychedelic and classic rock with a heavy Doors influence. The instrumentation is carnival-like, reminiscent of the swirling magical key work of Ray Manzarek. The songs are unconventional and deal with such topics as UFOs, urban legends, Nazis, war and environmental concerns. The lyrics are serious yet hints of satire shine through. For example, 'Killer Clown' is a grave commentary on a serial killer but the instrumentation blends a marching band beat with whimsical keys that are almost upbeat. 'Summer of Love' has a dreamy quality complete with a trippy guitar solo. It captures the sights and sounds of 1967. 'Let's Go Insane' picks up where Jim Morrison left off with its perceptive rap and funky 60's groove. Classic Rock for the New Millennium is an apt title for this CD, as the music is reminiscent of the psychedelic era with a modern edge for a new generation!

JOE RICHARDSON – STRIPPED DOWN: Stripped Down the CD title tells it like it is. This twelve-track collection features guitar master Joe Richardson on the acoustic and vocals. This is a bare bone blues record. The songs composed by Joe ring with authenticity. Richardson has the ideal voice for singing the blues. His expressive style is deep, organic and soulful. On this album he uses vintage guitars including a 1964 Gibson J-50, a 1937 Martin R-18 hole arch top and a 1932 metal body Dobro and others. These antique instruments add to the rich bodied sound found on this solo release. The music is simple yet complex. 'Killing...' is the opening track. It features Joe's versatile story telling with fine fretwork on a slightly twangy guitar. 'I've Got One Twing' is a song about being lonely but the whistling overlaid with the guitar is almost cheerful. An interesting juxtapose of ideas. 'Killin Ground' is startling from the very first chord to the last combined with Joe's bluesy vocals. Stripped Down is innovative in its basic format and truly captures the essence of the blues!

JOE RICHARDSON EXPRESS – SOMHELGISFEL: Somhelgisfel is the latest release from the Joe Richardson Express a blues band from Austin, Texas. Joe received his first guitar from his grandfather at the tender age of six. He spent many hours refining his sound and by age thirteen was playing clubs in South Louisiana. His devotion and passion for music has only increased during his long history of performing solo gigs and working with other popular bands such as the Vanilla Fudge. Joe is a powerful guitar, Dobro and harmonica player. Richardson's vocals are deep, earthy, gritty and honest. His songs are soulful and his Louisiana bayou roots shine through. Joe, like any wise blues man surrounds himself with gifted musicians. He is supported by Richard Lamm on drums and Kevin Phelan on bass. The trio is a tight combination of raw passion and synergy. Somhelgisfel grafts diverse branches of musical styles including the Delta blues, rock, hip-hop, gospel and boogie. 'Black Sheep of the Blues' is an unorthodox approach to heartfelt blues merging with scorching rock guitars. This song captures the highs and lows of living and playing the blues. 'The Gospel' is a creative fusion in which hip-hop is lost deep in the bayou. This song is storytelling at its best, complete with a funky beat and smokin' guitars. This melting pot is followed by 'Cry' with its hypnotic beat and more incredible string work by Joe. Somhelgisfel is brilliant in its straightforwardness and simple but full sounding format and the Joe Richardson Express are versatile blues at its best!

JOE STALLIN DA KING – IN MY ZOOM VOL. ONE: Joe Stallin Da King started rapping at age eleven and he is determined to rise to the top of the scene with his "new sound that is gonna bring the east back." His sixteen-track debut is varied with beats, effects and strong lyrics, which may not be appropriate for young ears. Joe Stallin Da King songs and style are the real deal. In addition to releasing a fierce first record, Joe Stallin Da King will be touring in the summer of 06 in fifteen states with Stizz Aggression. His diverse sound is heavy on rap with shades of hip-hop and urban. The CD is edgy. I particularly liked 'Boom' with its determined beat enhanced by effects with single and secondary rapping. 'It's Like That' is filled with anger as Joe spits out his lyrics to a techno, horn sound that sort of responds to his words. In My Zoom Vol. One is an advantageous step for Stallin to ascend the throne of rap!

JOE TURLEY – OVER THE HORIZON: Joe Turley is a veteran player and producer. Joe is also a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist (guitar, harmonica, piano and sax). Turley has had his fair share of ups and downs on the music road but highlights include working with top talent Dolly Parton and Waylon Jennings. Joe is currently focusing on solo projects and Over The Horizon is his second release featuring a first rate band. Joe's eleven track CD spans a diverse range of styles with a heavy dose of the blues. Songs are sultry to spiritual enhanced by Joe's gravely, soulful vocals. The instrumentation throughout is rock solid with plenty of singular solos. 'Ride With Me' is hot with it sizzling guitars, sassy sax and smoky vocal exchanges. 'Pressin' On' starts off subtle with gentle guitars, keys and a tambourine rhythm. The song then kicks into high gear with its powerful hook and then alternates between the two distinct tempos. 'No Stranger To The Blues' is a heavy blues tune about Jesus and troubles. Turley sings from the heart and the instrumental accents, especially the guitar solos, add to the emotion of the tune. Joe Turley is a passionate, professional artist and his second solo release is potent!

JOHN AMEN – ALL I'LL NEVER NEED: John Amen is a singer, songwriter, guitarist, harmonica player as well as a poet and a painter. John is a master storyteller whose songs explore a variety of characters, moods and life lessons. Amen is supported by a group of talented players who add backing vocals, bass, drums, horns, mandolin, pedal steel and violin. Thus, his songs are a musical tapestry of sights, sounds and travels. John's style is a blend of rock, jazz, folk and Americana. Amen uses a variety of vocal expressions to tell his tales of woes and triumphs. At times he is Dylanesque. 'Overload' flows on a straightforward rhythm layered over delicate instrumentation and sensitive, varied vocals. 'Bearings' starts off slow and sad before the tempo gently picks up to the hook than returning to the reflective tone and circling back to the hook enhanced with a harmonica and mandolin part before retracing and closing with the original tone. 'Daddy' features striking guitar chords and bass lines layered over expressive lyrics and vocals. The track takes an interesting turn with a jazzy, horn jam before returning to the more driving, pained vibe of the song. John Amen is a versatile artist who brings passion to his poetic music!

JOHN DANLEY – CANVAS & RHYTHM: Canvas & Rhythm is the third release from finger style guitarist John Danley. John is basically a one-man show and producer. He invites talented musicians to play violin, cello and tabla on a few of his songs but the majority are instrumentals performed by solely by John. Danley is a masterful innovative player. He has a unique technique of using a paintbrush across the guitar strings to create a percussive sound. This style can be heard on tracks 2,3,7 and 12. The twelve compositions on this CD reflect a variety of styles such as folk, new age, acoustic, jazz and world. John's influences include Michael Hedges and John Fahey. Canvas & Rhythm is a layered, colorful soundscape that is rich in vision. John who favors a Taylor 6 String uses his instrument to create songs with clarity and depth. His music is rich and fluid. Each composition flows smoothly and effortlessly into one other as the moods and styles delicately change. The CD opens with 'El Greco Shuffle' with it's quick fingerpickin' and a subtle stick beat and guitar taps. It slows down to a softer more reflective tone and than speeds back up to the opening Spanish guitar like chords. 'Atama', which means soul force in Hindi, is another great track with a world beat intriguing side effects and subtle but stunning guitar work. 'Baba Ganouj' is a funky mix of haunting guitars, a touch of the new age and plenty of chord and mood changes. Canvas & Rhythm is a brushstroke of guitar genius by artist John Danley!

JOHN DYER – GOSTAYPLAY: John Dyer is a multi-talented artist who has composed and performed for live dance and theater productions. In addition, John plays guitar, harmonica, piano and has no qualms about using sound effects and whistling. Dyer crafts colorful songs about life, memories and moments on his eleven-track CD. Dyer has an unusual yet compelling vocal style that revolves around words and the breaking up of syllables to give more meaning to his insightful lyrics. Gostayplay takes many interesting turns. I especially enjoyed "Shybreeze", "Center To Hold" and "Gostayplay". "Shybreeze" starts off with a striking combination of horns and rhythms floating into breezy vocals and whistling. "Center To Hold" captures the spirit of train movement in the rhythm enhanced by the harmonic and sound effects. John's storytelling about letting go has an animated, down home flavor. The title track was a creative mix of sleepy texture and tones, ending the CD on a good note. John Dyer's third release is diverse and dramatic!

JOHN MONTGOMERY – ONE STEP AWAY: One Step Away is the debut release from singer/songwriter John Montgomery. John also plays acoustic guitar on all of his original nine compositions and a Bob Dylan cover. Bob has been a major influence on John and his writing. Interestingly, Montgomery spent many years studying neurobiology and was planning on becoming a scientist when the call to play music became stronger and stronger. John's songs are a nice blend of alternative folk, a touch of pop and well-balanced melodies. He is supported by other talented musicians on a wide assortment of instruments including the dorbo, the lap steel, the organ, the cello, the xaphoon and the accordion. His songs are mulit-layered and textured because of the variety of sounds used. One Step Away is expertly produced. John has clear concise vocals and writes reflective, poetic lyrics that are intimate and well arranged. This CD has a mellow soft flow. The set opens with 'Not Now, Not Ever' with its upbeat rock tempo, intriguing lyrics and heartfelt vocals. 'One Step Away' has a smooth slightly spooky feel, a catchy hook line and enchanting instrumentation, which includes the lap steel and B3 organ. 'In the Mirror' reflects poignant words executed with expressive vocals and subtly accented with the cello. John writes musical montages that tell interesting stories in an honest and original forum. Hopefully, this CD is just the first step of many for this talented songwriter.

JOHN PAUL – WINTER TREK: John Paul is a busy man. He is a full time student at Emerson College and a singer/songwriter. John plays bass, drums, guitar and piano on his thirteen-track CD. Paul has performed in a number of bands but this album is mostly a solo project with some collaborations. John's sound is a blend of airy pop and modern rock. His stories are varied with many moods ranging from happy to sad. "Sunshine" floats on dreamy keys and instrumentation. John uses a low key vocal style reminiscent of Donovan that is complemented by female vocalist Jessica Wallner. "Lovely Evening" has a reflective tone with whispering vocals as the tempo and texture of the song slowly grows. "Yellow Jacket" is catchy, colorful and perhaps a bit quirky. John Paul has potential and Winter Trek is a good start on his musical journey!

JOHN SCOFIELD – UBERJAM: Uberjam is the hot new release from jazz guitar virtuoso John Scofield. He blends a variety of experiences and styles to create an assorted mix. Scofield started playing R & B and soul; soon he was immersed in "real" jazz as well as acoustic jazz. Later he worked in the Miles Davis Band returning to a more funky sound. He continued to grow as a player exploring swing, swampy grooves and free jazz. Scofield has an extensive discography, which included his own music as well as his performances with other artists. Uberjam is a diversified mix of instrumentals. John is a prolific guitarist and is backed by talented musicians. All of the 11 tracks on this CD are tight and each song has a distinct flavor. Uberjam is spiked with both solid guitar leads and funky rhythm guitars. Uberjam is seasoned with spicy bass and percussion. This CD is accented with strong keyboards and a dash of saxophone and flute to complete a great combination of music. The first track 'Acidhead' is a trip filled with interesting sounds, strong percussion and groovy bridge changes. 'Ideofunk' has a catchy beat and a funky fun sound. 'Snap Crackle Pop' is smooth and includes great guitar work. Uberjam is jam packed with terrific improvisational jazz that should appeal to wide range of listeners.

JOHN SHEEHAN – CHRISTMAS INSTRUMENTAL SOLO GUITAR: John Sheehan is a well respected singer, songwriter and finger style guitarist based out of Ringwood, New Jersey. John is a full time musician who gigs regularly, teaches guitar and has release three albums. Christmas Instrumental Solo Guitar is a ten track collection of favorite Christmas classics ranging from traditional to contemporary arrangements. John takes an original approach to familiar songs such as 'Silent Night', which is played in a beautiful blues key. 'God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen' is serious yet spirited followed by a cheerful version of 'Jolly Old St Nick'. John's interpretation of 'Jingle Bells' starts off slow and reflective before moving into the more familiar up-tempo version. Sheehan's medieval 'O Come, O Come Emmanuel' is majestic as is his innovative renaissance version of 'What Child Is This?'. Every song on Christmas Instrumental Solo Guitar is enjoyable and will put you in a peaceful, happy, holiday mood! This CD makes a great gift!

JOHN SHEEHAN – INSTRUMENTAL SOLO GUITAR (aka "just John"): One Man's Impression: A CD review by J.L. Hannah – When I listen to John Sheehan's Instrumental Solo Guitar, I see the past. Not in an outdated, passe' kind of way, but rather, in a timeless, of the earth, fabled kind of play. I see horses and mountains that matter and stream. I see forests and castles, minstrels, the sea. I meet villans and ruffians, Robinhood dreams. There are dark roads and corners and sunlit plateaus. Questions upon questions, sparked off in earnest rows. Blacksmiths toil in labors of love. No empty distractions, an eagle above. I see green on green and blue on grey. Rock-riddled coastline of deep ancient days. No, this is not a movie review and there are no lyrics to this recording...not a one. Yet, all this I see. Great playing is rare, but great playing of great songs, well...that's precious. And that's what you get here from John Sheehan. On this CD he doesn't just play some pleasant acoustic guitar (although much of it is quite pleasant... 'Beauty Road', 'Ancestry', 'Governor Mountain', to name a few). He digs in and attacks, often...sometimes subtle, yet always strong. There is a backbone...a pulse, a vibrant life running through it. And as full as it is, it's all just John. He goes it completely alone here...no accompaniment, no percussion, no cloudy effects. There is no note wasted, no drivel or pretense. It's all just John, and his guitar of course, and the songs. The Dedicated Fingerstyle Guitar Method is smiling a wide grin somewhere as a result of this recording. It speaks so well for the school, not just because of John's inspired execution, but also because of how at home fingerstyle is with his wonderful melodies. I won't try to capture each song here in narrative. Comparisons and labeling also fall short, yet they are helpful in pointing one toward a familiar direction. So when you ask, "OK, so who does this guy John Sheehan sound like"? Let's just say that if you like Jorma (acoustic Hot Tuna), if you can imagine Ian Anderson without words ...ditto for James Taylor...If you appreciate John Prine and Mark Knophler, then my sense is that you will thoroughly enjoy this CD. If you have a Celtic bone in your body or past, you can't help but feel much of it at your core. It just works that way. If you liken a musician's long journey to the building of a house, then I would say that what you have here is the strongest of foundations built by a gifted artist... brick by brick, board by board, note by note, sigh by sigh, all by himself. On the strength of such a firm footing...this debut cd...it's hard to imagine anything but extraordinary things coming from Mr. Sheehan further on up the road. Perhaps you see (or hear) what I see? Catch a glimpse at www.johnsheehan.net.

JOHN SHEEHAN – MODERN MAN: Modern Man is John Sheehan's second release. John is an accomplished fingerstyle guitarist from Ringwood, New Jersey. Modern Man explores a diversity of styles such as bluegrass, county and folk rock drawing from various inspirations such as nature and life experiences. The CD is an eclectic mix of guitar and banjo instrumentals mixed in with 6 vocal tracks. John is an extraordinary player and his songs are accented with the fiddle, standup bass, drums and harmonica. Modern Man has philosophical lyrics addressing issues of overconsumption and overcoming life's struggles, as told in the songs 'Modern Man,' 'Beyond Your Means' and 'Life Song.' My favorites on the CD are Tracks 1, 4, 7 and 16. 'Land Rush' is a great banjo tune supported by a fretless bass grove that really adds dimension to the track. The other three are great examples of John's abilities as a diversified guitarist. Overall, every track on Modern Man is enjoyable and a must have for the modern man who needs an upbeat CD to unwind with.

JOHN SHEEHAN – NOTES FROM SUBURBIA: The 13 pieces on John Sheehan's latest CD, wryly titled "Notes from Suburbia", offer a wealth of finger picking as they reflect on human experience — from the revealing nature of dreams to the discovery of the awe-inspiring in the mundane. John Sheehan is a guitarist of unusual and varied accomplishment. "Notes from Suburbia" is John's third CD and it is diverse, including Renaissance lute pieces, a guitar arrangement of a traditional Irish harp tune and candid songs influenced by jazz, blues and to a lesser degree, eastern music. All of these ingredients form a showcase for expressive, smart and forceful guitar playing. "Notes" opens with ‘Desert Prayer' an ethereal instrumental reflection on events following the September 11, 2001 tragedy incorporating the blues and a melody suggestive of North Indian devotional music. With tabla accompaniment, ‘Last Night in a Dream' — a song about the consciousness-expanding power of dreams — is reminiscent of a 1992 collaboration between blues guitarist Ry Cooder and the Indian musician Vishwa Mohan Bhatt. Throughout "Notes" John employs a sophisticated variety of chords in his arrangements of songs and instrumentals. ‘Together we Dream' is a moody contemporary fingerstyle piece. ‘Cabin Fever', a driving, acrobatic boogie of ascending and descending licks and chords, leaves you breathless. (It should really be witnessed live to be believed.) The CD's final song, ‘All Around Me Now' brings to light John's ability to draw inspiration from the natural world, as well as his ongoing fascination with mushrooms. This regard for nature, along with John's lack of cynicism and his respect for the aspirations of the individual, makes me feel that in addition to being a great guitar album, the songwriting on "Notes" has a kinship with New England transcendentalism. And in these politically and economically uncertain times, appreciation of the transcendental is unquestionably an American sensibility worth nurturing.

JOHN SONNTAG – CHASING STARS: John Sonntag is a multi-talented musician who was educated at Berklee. John plays harmonica, guitar, mandolin and piano, which are some of the many fine instruments featured on his sophomore release. Sonntag is also an in-demand producer who owns his own studio (Thunder Pumpkin Studio). John has a rich tenor voice and impressive range. His music is a blend of Americana, country and roots-rock. John is a storyteller and his songs are heartfelt landscapes of life. Sonntag's music ranges from tender ballads to gritty odes about industrialism. 'Waitin On Time' is an innovative blend of country slide style guitars layered over a funky bongo rhythm along with other subtle instrumentation. John's vocals on the track are stellar, setting the standard high for the following eleven tracks. The closer, 'I'm On The East Side' has snappy tempos and tones combined with sad, serious lyrics. This CD is riveting from start to finish, it is filled with light yet layered instrumentation, interesting lyrics and expressive vocals. Chasing Stars proves that John Sonntag has star potential!

JOHN TAGLIEIRI – LEAP OF FAITH: Taglieri is a multi-talented singer and songwriter who is capable of producing music across many genres. John wrote, produced, sang and performed all the music on this, his debut CD. It's easy to see how he incorporated many of the influences he picked up playing in New Jersey cover bands and used them masterfully on this record, released in January of 1
