M2B – SIGNS: Two M's and a B is how this musical collaboration gets its name. Formed in early 2006 M2B brings together the talents of Michael Katz (vocals, song writing, instrumentalist) and Marcus Wolf (guitar, percussion, programming) bolstered by the piano and synth playing of Ben Stivers. Called sophisticated garage rock with great songs M2B makes an impression right off the bat. Katz, a software company executive by day, takes an analytic look at life to dissect the meaning of daily moments and distant memories. The professionalism of Wolf and Stivers form a melodic and engaging base for Katz's story telling to take root. "I Must Be Dreaming" glides on Katz's passionate vocal delivery and Wolf's delicate chord and lead work while telling a nightmare story of lost love. "Before We Say Goodbye" - rising on Katz's vocal hook this song is a soulful reminder that every interaction with each other could be our last. "Better Than You" is an ode to A-Holes that flaunts itself as the hardest rocking track on the disc with a scorching lead to boot. M2B is better than a lot of the indie rock out there and Signs is a roots rock album in the vein of Matthew Sweet, Dave Grohl, Jackon Browne and Jeff Buckley. This debut effort is a signal that things are moving in the right direction for Katz and company!
MADELYN LAVENDER – MEMORY TREE: Memory Tree is the first full-length CD from singer and songwriter Madelyn Lavender. Madelyn also plays six and twelve string acoustic guitars on this dozen-song collection. Four other prolific professional players and producers join Madelyn on this colorful collaboration. Lavender writes vibrant visual lyrics that are set to a variety of musical textures and tones. Her music is a fusion of rock, folk, jazz, psychedelic, pop and world. The international grooves and instrumentation give Madelyn's music an edge and diversity that is exceptional. Lavender is a strong singer who executes her poetic lyrics with passion and care. The opening track 'Travelin Alone Together' flows on a hip bongo beat as Madelyn's versatile vocals carry the listener on a magical journey. The guitar work is subtle yet worldly. 'Money, Sex and Power' clocks in at almost seven minutes weaving cunning chords with crafty beats combined with shrewd lyrics and controlled vocals. The title and closing song is a rich reflective poem accented with deep delicate instrumentation. Memory Tree grows on you as musical multi-layers cascade into expressive lively vocals.
MAJXSTY – WICKED: Kimberly Williams aka Majxsty is a singer/songwriter born and raised in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. From a young age Majxsty has been passionate about music and she is currently seeking a degree in commercial music songwriting. Majxsty's influences and style combines the best of hip-hop, R&B and pop with a heavy does of rap. Majxsty pens candid lyrics that she speaks with clarity and conviction. Kimberly and producer Reginald Jones take a no-nonsense approach to production, combining unique rhythms with plenty of sound effects. On some songs they employ a conversational style to add to the diversity of Majxsty's twelve-track collection. Majxsty's has a sassy attitude and some of her songs are sexy. 'M.A.J.X.S.T.Y.' follows an instrumental intro theme with rapid fire rapping layered over clever electronic beats and effects. 'Pass Da Blunt' features a male voice along with Majxsty's floating over innovative sounds and funky rhythms. Wicked is cunning with its beguiling beats and royal rapping. Majxsty is a magical artist, who has the potential to be the queen of rap!
MANDO DIAO – HURRICANE BAR: Mando Diao is a four man band based out of Sweden who are busy building acclaim and a following in Europe and beyond. Their energetic songs are a blend of diverse influences ranging from 60's pop to edgy, contemporary rock. Hurricane Bar is their second release that was expertly produced by Richard Rainey who worked with U2 on "All That You Can't Leave Behind" which won Richard three Grammies. All four members of Mando Diao sing and all are proficient on their instrument of choice. The band pens lyrics that are moody and mysterious. Visual images are coupled with statements that force you to think what do they mean? The CD includes fourteen animated tracks and three videos providing a mix of multi-media. Mando Diao's music is articulate yet spirited and each song has an interesting arrangement and twist to offer. 'God Knows' starts off with a languid guitar chord before kicking into an up-tempo groove and driving vocals. The guitar work and the jam mid song soar. 'Added Family' flows on a dreamy rhythm and vocals that extend from pensive to passionate. 'This Dream Is Over' combines a retro vibe with modern textures and tones with another great, quick, guitar solo. Mando Diao is a dynamic band and their sophomore release is a montage of intrigue and masterful musicianship!
MARC THOMAS – WHEN ONE MET TWO: When One Met Two is an EP release from Marc Thomas. Marc has been working with the northern Virginia band Mile Post Nine for the past four years. Thomas is still a key member of the band but sought the opportunity to play with new musicians and work on a project with a different perspective. His five-track EP is a diverse mix of music with steady percussion, concrete bass and skillful guitars. Marc is the singer/songwriter of When One Met Two . In addition, he plays acoustic guitar, organ, synthesizers and piano. Thomas writes thoughtful reflective lyrics mixed with stimulating sound effects to create interesting pop rock songs. The EP is well produced by Ted Comerford who has also worked on Mile Post Nine's CDs. Each song on this collection has a different flavorful vibe. I liked 'Answers' with its balanced beat, solid instrumentation and echo effect vocals. It sets a good tone for the rest of this collaboration.
MARE EDSTROM – INSIDE THE BLUES: Mare Edstrom is a vocalist, songwriter, pianist and guitarist based out of the Midwest. She started singing at a young age and was taking piano lessons by age eight. Soon after Mare was performing with bands, choirs and theater groups. Edstrom's musical influences are classical, rock and the blues. Inside The Blues is her cover tribute to some of the greats such as T-Bone Walker, Memphis Minnie, Bessie Smith, Robert Johnson and others. She is joined by a group of talented players who share her passion for the genre. Producer Ken Fox also handles the beguiling guitars and bass. The back of Mare's CD cover says it best – "The Blues. Soul wrenching music straight from the heart; real songs-grit, joy and humor, the most honest form of human expression." This paraphrase sums up the essence of this fourteen track CD. Edstrom has a wide vocal range and the fervor to sing the blues. Her interpretations meld authenticity with modern textures and tones. For example, a soulful harmonica is found throughout the collection but there is also the subtle use of a turntable on 'Got Mud in My Soul'. It's hard to say how I choose my favorites from this collection, as all the songs had heart and first-rate musicianship. I appreciated Mare's interpretations of 'That's Alright', 'Statesboro Blues' (a complete 360 from the Allman's cover) and 'Spiderman Blues'. Mare's CD is a powerful bridge from the blues of the past to the more modern renditions of this potent genre.
MARGARET MCCLURE – TEARS FOR JACK: Margaret McClure is a singer, songwriter, environmentalist and cancer survivor. Margaret grew up in southern California where she was trained in classical violin before exploring blue grass and later the raw energy of punk. McClure has also studied dance, piano and theater. Her varied experiences find their way into her diverse six-track CD. Margaret's music blends textures of Americana, electronic, pop and rock in a very accessible format. McClure writes and sings lyrics filled with real life emotions and experiences. 'Stay With Me' is the opening track with its slow, steady rhythm and clear yet breathy vocals. 'The Story Is Still The Same' features changing techno beats and singing. 'You're Not Gonna Break My Heart' has dreamy effects and vocals. 'Brick Wall' melds pop with a country-rock sound that is quite creative. 'No Love Voodo' is a catchy, edgy rocker performed Sheryl Crow style and the album closes with the serious 'The Story Is Still The Same'. Margaret McClure is a passionate musician and Tears For Jack is imaginative and poetic!
MARK ANDREW WEAKLAND – SONGS FROM THE COUNTRY: Songs from the Country is the latest release from singer/songwriter Mark Andrew Weakland. Mark is also a teacher, an author and he has recorded and performed many original musical compositions for both adults and children. Weakland also plays the guitars, percussions and keys on this thirteen-track collection. Mark has experience in many genres including rock, jazz, funk and classical but this CD can best be described as American folk rock. Mark writes lyrics that are inspired by life, love sadness and the wonders of nature. His songs are filled with imagery and Weakland sings with joy and sincerity. Songs from the Country is an acoustic record with plenty of percussion, electric guitars and bass. The opening title track starts with the sweet song of birds flowing into Mark's warm melodic voice. The second song, 'Voices' echoes like a clear, bright sunny day that praises nature through velvety vocals and grand guitars. 'A River Flows' is smooth and reflective. 'Dirty Water' is an environmental anthem with electric guitars, a soft steady beat and vocals that soar. All the songs on this CD are well produced and expertly arranged. Songs from the Country captures the joys and sorrows of life through music that speaks to the heart.
MARK AUSTIN – TRANSPARENT: Transparent is the latest release from multi-instrumentalist and producer Mark Austin. Mark is an experienced bass player and bandleader. Two tracks on Transparent were originally recorded back in 1992 with the band known as Ooga Booga and the rest of the songs here are the result of more recent studio sessions. This nine-track collection is diverse and showcases dynamic instrumentation. The majority of the complex arrangements clock in at over five minuets, melding a variety of moods, paces and styles. This CD is improvisational exploring rock, psychedelic, acid jazz and trance. The music is ambient and the band is both experimental yet tight. Each song has something magical to offer but my favorites happened to be the first two songs. Both 'Higher Love' and 'I'm Searchin' feature Diane Harris on flute adding a whole other dimension to songs with funky rhymes and soulful vocals. These songs and the tracks that follow are imaginative and expand upon the synergy of the band. Transparent is a masterful montage of genres and first rate musicianship that should appeal to a wide range of listeners!
MARK AUSTIN BAND – COSMIC TRIGGER: Cosmic Trigger is the debut release from the Mark Austin Band. This ten-track collection explores a vast range of moods, stylings and genres. The music is multi-dimensional, experimenting in acid jazz, pop fusion, jam, funk and the blues. Mark pens thought provoking lyrics and combines them with hearty horns, strong guitar leads and bass and percussion lines that are hypnotic. Mark Austin and Lewis Hutcheson share the responsibility of vocals and both are versatile soulful singers. Cosmic Trigger is a creative fusion of eclectic complex arrangements that are well produced. The CD opens with 'Think of You' a musical journey that begins with expressive vocals and progresses into a funky jam with animated horns, sizzling guitars and mesmerizing bass and drum lines. 'North Side Story' is an instrumental odyssey, starting off soft and spacey and picking up to a more fluid and upbeat pace then returning to more subtle sounds and experimental playing. 'Don't Be Scared' is an epic heavy on the horns utilizing plenty of techniques that range from funk to almost psychedelic. Textures, tones and paces are ever changing as the guitars, bass and percussion add their touches. The Mark Austin Band are dynamic and their freshmen release is out of this world!
MARK BODINO – A MOMENT IN TIME: A Moment in Time is the latest release from singer/songwriter Mark Bodino. Mark is a one-man band on this CD as he also plays guitar, bass, keys, and piano and was responsible for all arrangements. Bodino sites an assortment of influences including The Beatles, John Denver and Pacabel. His music reflects a variety of moods and styles. This New Jersey artist has been playing in Manhattan, Jersey and the Philadelphia region. His twelve-track collection is a mix of hard rock guitar based songs, beautiful ballads touch by classical and a mix of folk. A Moment in Time is a well-rounded collection showcasing Mark's talents as a strong guitarist both in the rock and classical fields as well as blending additional styles such as jazz and blues. Mark writes poetic lyrics that are executed with vocal versatility and creative instrumentation. The CD bounces from fast paced to slower songs. The opening track 'Love the Ways' has good vocal inflections, accented by strings yet carried by a steady beat and other textured tones. 'Abyss' is an example of Mark's hard rock sound with high voltage guitars, a fluid beat and harsher but pure vocals. 'Goodbye' opens with a strong hook line infused with moody almost country like guitars and layered beats and sweet vocals. A Moment in Time is a soundscape of moving songs that are well produced and masterfully executed.
MARK CANTANZRITI – COLLECTION/MUSIC ONE: Collection/Music One is a solo release from Mark Cantanzriti. Mark was born and raised in northeast Ohio where his love of music stemmed from the exciting local and touring band scenes. Later, he relocated to Colorado and has had a diverse career playing in a variety of bands. He has mastered different styles such as psychedelic, power pop, hard rock and modern rock. This solo effort which is written, performed and produced by Cantanzriti is a complete departure from previous recorded works. This twenty one-track instrumental is imaginative and adventurous. Mark has been busy composing music in support of film and video projects and I believe Collection/Music One is an effort to create visual pictures. The CD has a new age mystical feel and each song has a theme. 'Spooked' as the title implies has dark instrumentation, haunting chords and a scary tone. The music captures the idea of hearing strange sounds and slowly looking over ones shoulder. It is followed by 'Whale' which emulates the ebb and flow of water and creates the illustration of a majestic mammal swimming the seas. 'One Hundred Summers' has an electric shine that captures the easy feel of many summers. Mark Cantanzriti is a veteran musician and his latest release demonstrates his creative growth and risk as an artist. It is quite possible that any of these 21 instrumentals will be heard in a theater or video near you!
MARK KERR – ONE DRINK AWAY FROM THE BLUES: Mark Kerr is a multi-talented composer, player and producer. Mark is well versed in the blues, country, jazz and rock having played in a number of cover bands. Kerr also studied music theory at North Western State University and has worked with the legendary Percy Sledge and Curtis Mayfield. One Drink Away From The Blues is Mark's flawless debut, featuring eight smoking tracks and an impressive modern interpretation of B.B. Kings' 'The Thrill is Gone'. Mark has just the right, slightly gravely-toned voice ideal for singing the blues. His guitar playing is sizzling and Kerr's band is also hot adding interesting rhythms, textures and tones to Mark's music. I particular liked the animated blues based opener and the feisty finisher featuring furious guitars but everything in between is good too. Mark Kerr is a modern day blues man bringing diversity and passion to his craft!
MARLON CHERRY – ANCIENT SOUND, MODERN DANCE: Marlon Cherry has a colorful, musical history. Marlon is an experimental player who has performed with African, jazz, rock and even punk bands. Cherry is also an accomplished composer and solo artist. Ancient Sound, Modern Dance is Cherry's latest eleven-track release in which Marlon plays guitar, percussion, recorder and more. Deep Singh a masterful, tabla player is the only guest on this impressive, instrumental CD. The songs are based on the beauty of motion in relation to modern dance, yet the music echoes of ancient times and world cultures. The CD is stellar from start to finish but of particular note are "Kuku Afuera De Djoniba" and "Ballet Hispanico Summer". "Kuku" features rapid fire percussion melding with far out guitar licks and sound effects that at times reminded me of birds. It is a powerful piece unifying native tones with modern textures. "Ballet Hispanico Summer" is a beautiful blend of light, magical percussion dancing with slide like guitar leads. The song also takes an interesting turn into the funky realm of jazz. Ancient Sound, Modern Dance is an innovative album, flawlessly mixing the past with the present!
MARLON CHERRY – ELSEWHERE: Elsewhere is Marlon Cherry's second full-length solo release. He has played in a variety of bands including the tribal rock group Mecca Bodega and the Indo-rock fusion group Church of Betty. Elsewhere is an ambitious project of multi-genre, world music that hints of rock, reggae, soul and jazz. It is an eclectic mix of beats, soulful vocals and funky instrumentation. This ten-track collection has a spiritual vibe and Marlon's vocals are deep and poignant. Cherry sings with power, emotion and feeling. One can understand why he has been referred to as a 'soul mystic.' Marlon plays most of the instruments on his songs except for the sitar, sax, tabla and some guitars that are handled by other talented musicians. 'Just How Beautiful' is accented by fine guitar work, heartfelt vocals and other intriguing sounds. Marlon's interpretation of Joni Mitchell's 'Dreamland' captures a world sound with powerful percussion and excellent vocal inflections. 'Grace' flows on Cherry's smooth voice and subtle but solid instrumentation.Elsewhere is a diverse collection of well-orchestrated songs and expressive vocals that is a gem for listeners everywhere!
MARY FAKHOURY – ABOUT ME SAMPLER: Mary Fakhoury is an educator, model, producer, singer and songwriter. Mary's music is a diverse blend of her Jordanian heritage, blues, jazz, pop and world. Mary writes songs about hope, life and love. About Me is Fakhoury's debut full-length release ranging from 1940's classics to pop/rock ballads. The sampler features three different songs from the album. 'Who Needs You' is a piano based song featuring old style vocals. 'Not To Keep' has rock guitars in a pop arrangement and 'Throw You Away is a ballad enhanced by piano. Mary's varied vocals run the gamut from sassy to sweet and her arrangements meld various genres in a surprising way. Mary Fakhoury is an original artist who performs with passion!
MASSIMO – MASSIMO: Michael Massimo is the lead vocalist and namesake of Massimo - a rock quartet based out of New Jersey. Michael composes lyrics that are poetic and perceptive. Mr. Massimo is a four-octave tenor who sings with poise and passion. Michael plays guitar, vox and produces. Roger Sherman on drums, Jess Converse on electric guitar and Dave Bokour on bass provide strong support and musicianship for the band. This five-track EP features well-produced anthem like rock songs. 'Anywhere But Here' has contrasting acoustic and electric guitars, swirling around solid rhythms and Michael's penetrating lyrics and singing. 'Accident' has a deep, dark reflective tone with crunchy guitars, gritty vocals and a driving beat. 'Wasted' has heavy riffs blending with melodic textures and supported by wide-ranging, versatile vocals. 'Mountain' is earthy with its strapping, rock rhythms, soaring guitar leads and singing that climbs as the song reaches its peak. 'Daylight' is a six-minute epic about the sun shining down on a number of scenes including a shipwreck survivor, a blind man and Michael himself. Massimo is a talented band crafting music that is intense and intelligent!
MATAHARI – MATAHARI: Matahari formed in 2003 and within a year this Boston based band released it's first self titled debut. Ivona, a high-powered female vocalist, fronts the band. She is supported by co-founder Shaun on guitars, Frank playing bass and Chris providing the beats on drums. Their music is a mystical brew of rocking riffs with techno edges. Their lyrics are provocative and somewhat dark. Matahari blends modern rock with American and European influences with dashes of electronics and punk. Their sonic style is similar to Garbage and No Doubt but Matahari has pioneered their own unique sound with hard edges and durable hooks. This thirteen-track collection opens with 'Spare Me'. This song has attitude and showcases Ivona's vocal capabilities, which will be a constant though out the CD. The instrumentation is tight and intense. 'Mental Drive' combines an energetic beat with bold guitar licks and full-injected vocals. 'Stalker' utilizes electronic sounds and beats in combination with hard-hitting riffs. The song than downshifts to a mid-tempo pace before returning to the techno tones and rocking riffs. All in all it is a creative arrangement combining a variety of genres. Matahari is energized on their debut CD and are off to a good start taking New England and beyond by storm!
MATAHARI – SHRINE OF COUNTERFEITS: Matahari is an alternative rock group fronted by female vocalist Ivona Coufalova. The band includes Frank Couture on bass and Shaun Michaud on guitar. Matahari's influences include Garbage, No Doubt and 80's new wave. Their sound is a blend of contemporary pop, punk, rock and techno. Matahari's lyrics are intriguing set to dark driving rhythms and upbeat grooves. Ivona is a passionate vocalist and the band is hard driving utilizing rock rifts with an electronic edge. The CD opens with 'Scream Out Love' that combines stimulating techno tones with a heavy beat leading to the powerful hook belted out by Coufalova. It is followed by another rocker 'Sugar', which is clever lyrically and edgy in execution. 'Over Now' melds varied tempos with dramatic pauses. The song is dark and driving. Matahari, named after a World War I female spy, is aptly named as they combine modern mystery with musical magic!
MATT ROBERTS – NOW YOU ARE GONE: By day, Matt Roberts is a doctor, at night he is a singer, songwriter and producer. Dr. Roberts writes intelligent lyrics about life. Matt melds both classic and modern influences into his music that can range from "electro acoustic to piano pop". The ten tracks on Now You Are Gone flow like stories and are loosely based on his work. The opening track 'The Tiger Ballad' is handled from a singular perspective and conveys the desperation of someone looking for a declaration of love. Matt sings the song with such heart and power as soft instrumentation emphasizes the mood. 'Binary' is described as a computer generated song with a menacing groove yet it is contrasted with a punchy piano and catchy vocals. The CD continues to build on the momentum with more expressive vocals and varied instrumental mixes. Songs range from the effect heavy 'Her Love' to 'Charlotte Rose', a pure piano piece. Dr. Roberts prescribes just the right combination of creative pop with serious storytelling and Now You Are Gone is just what the doctor ordered!
MATTHEW SWEET AND SUSANNA HOFFS – UNDER THE COVERS VOL. 1: Two of pop music's darlings - Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs of The Bangles - have joined voices in celebration of one of the most important eras in pop music. Featuring 15 of the duo's favorite pop tunes from the 1960s, Under The Covers Vol. 1 combines popular hits and obscure gems from such important names in music as The Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Beach Boys, The Who, Neil Young and Crazy Horse, The Zombies, The Mamas And The Papas, The Left Banke, The Bee Gees, The Marmalade, Fairport Convention, Love, The Stone Poneys, and The Velvet Underground. Sweet and Hoffs, each with a stunning and highly distinguishable voice of their own, mingle melodies and tones for new, unique harmonies that truly reflect the sounds of the time. A '60s pop primer of sorts, Under The Covers Vol. 1's 15 songs span a wide range of genres - from rock to folk to pop - but all have that unmistakable '60s vibe. It's obvious that Sweet and Hoffs have put their own stamp on these covers, individually and collectively, but have done so with a sense of respect and admiration for the original versions and composers. On Under The Covers Vol. 1 Sweet and Hoffs pay homage to arguably the most important decade in pop music by inserting their own musical personalities and unique harmonies for a fresh and new sound. Dig it.
MAURIZIO LAUROJA – HEAVEN OR HELL: Maurizio Lauroja was born and raised in Italy. From a young age Lauroja was passionate about music and in particular the electric guitar. Maurizio has played in a number of bands before taking a leading role with his international debut Heaven and Hell. Lauroja and his band of talented friends have written and produced a first rate CD. Their sound is classic rock based combined with the blues, boogie and soul. This thirteen-track collection is full of sizzling guitar leads including plenty of wah-wah, combined with strong rhythms and innovative keys. Maurizio writes lyrics that range from light to dark and interestingly are sung in English rather than his native language. Heaven or Hell starts off scorching with the up-tempo 'Surprising Sue' and continues building momentum. 'Dark' has a subtler pace that melds with smoky vocals, a sassy sax and a stellar gumbo of guitar riffs. 'Love Struck' layers classic and modern textures and tones with innovative instrumentation, sizzling guitars and strong, harmonizing vocals. 'Lucky Me' features soulful vocals accented by the keys with a funky rhythm before the hard-hitting guitar leads kick in. Heaven or Hell is hot from start to finish and Maurizio and his band bring passion and professionalism to this diverse and dynamic debut!
MEGHAN CARY – ONION DREAM: Onion Dream is the second release by singer/songwriter and guitar player Meghan Cary. Meghan is both an accomplished musician and actress. Cary is a member of the NYC based Actor's Shakespeare Company and she is the voice heard in many commercials. Cary's folk rock music ranges from sorrowful to funny with a touch of the blues. She writes honest poetic lyrics that are musically multi-layered. I recently had the pleasure of seeing Meghan perform live. Cary is personable and effervescent. She effortlessly connects with her audience sharing with them her touring experiences and the inspiration for her songs. Meghan has been described as a storytelling troubadour, she writes personal songs about love, life and relationships. She surrounds herself with proficient musicians on Onion Dream an eleven track epic. The opening song 'This Angel' has a steady solid beat, passionate inflections and subtle keys. 'Waiting' has a catchy hook line superbly accented with a fiddle. This song sours from passion to sorrow, which is powerfully conveyed by Cary's expressive vocals. 'So Long' is another great example of Meghan's story telling skills set to harmonizing guitars, bass and organ. Meghan Cary is an eloquent singer and her latest release Onion Dream is a flavorful addition to any CD collection.
MERCURY BOY – GET IT GOIN': Get It Goin' is the debut release from Mercury Boy aka Nick Terzi. Nick is the lead singer and songwriter for this four-piece band based out of New York City. Their style has been described as "Billy Idol meets glam rock." Another way to describe this high-energy band is pop rock with shades of punk, retro and alternative. Their influences include the Foo Fighters and The Cars. This four-track collection is based on personal encounters and observations. Feisty beats, driving guitars and high voltage vocals complete the package. All four songs are upbeat and insightful. My favorite was 'Bus Driver' with its high-octane beat, an invigorating guitar solo and fervent vocals. Get It Goin' is a strong start for Mercury Boy who are currently touring in support of the CD and energizing audiences in their wake!
MERMAID KISS – THE MERMAID KISS ALBUM: The Mermaid Kiss Album is the latest release from adult contemporary rockers Mermaid Kiss. This talented trio from Kington, England self produced this crossover collection. Evelyn Downing is the dreamy vocalist and flutist of the band. Jamie Field plays bass, acoustic and electric guitars. Andrew Garman provides keyboards, bass and drums. Their fourteen-track CD of originals is filed with poetic, picturesque lyrics. Their sound is ambient with shades of rock, pop and atmospheric instrumentation. Mermaid Kiss weaves progressive music with rich vocal harmonies. The album has a distinctive dramatic quality that blends mystical moods with whimsical woodwind moments. The album opens with 'Mermaid Kiss' an eloquent narrative enhanced by Evelyn's vivid versatile vocal control. Soft instrumentation creates a slow burning passion to the soundscape of the song. 'Soundchaser' is haunting featuring beguiling vocal blends. There is a soft subtle beat throughout that sounds sort of like a clock ticking and melding with stark guitar and keyboards. Vocals are the focal point of this song and others on this poignant collection from the matchless Mermaid Kiss!
MESMERE – AN OVERLONG WELCOME: Mesmere is a five-piece, based out of Brisbane, Australia. Mesmer is fronted by Maryanne Stewart a vocalist whose range goes from faint to formidable. The band's two guitarists and rhythm section craft a colorful, organic spectrum of sound. The name Mesmer is derived from the word mesmerize, which describes the effect that they hope their music will have on people. Mesmere's sound melds modern and progressive rock in songs that are edgy, expansive and experimental. Their diverse, eleven-track CD features multi-layered songs that are epic in structure. I particularly liked "Keepsakes" with its dynamic instrumentation and dramatic vocals. "An Overlong Welcome" was also interesting as it starts off with gospel like vocals before moving into a spacey, wild soundscape. Mesmere will hold your attention with their innovative An Overlong Welcome album!
MICHAEL FALZARANO – THE KING JAMES SESSIONS: Michael Falzarano is a multi-instrumentalist, producer, singer and songwriter based out of New York City. Michael has been playing for over thirty-five years in a variety of bands including the legendary Hot Tuna. The King James Sessions is a solo project that started out as an acoustic duo with fellow composer and musician Kerry Kearney. Falzarano and Kearney were recording tracks in a "great sounding room" using "old school" methods, yet somehow the album evolved and before they knew it a bunch of talented players armed with a diversity of instruments were in on the sessions. The end result was a dozen animated songs that convey the spontaneity and the live talent behind the music. Michael writes visual and vivid songs with a variety of instruments from a Dobra to a synth which add to their richness. Falzarano draws from a colorful pallet of genres including county, Dixie, rock and plenty of blues. The CD opens on a down home mood with 'Catfishin' a song about catching and cooking a fish. The up-tempo country-rock tempo and instrumentation casts just the right atmosphere and there are a variety of sounds to focus on too. 'New Season' features flavorful instrumentation with solos along with harmonizing vocals and a catchy rhythm. It is a great jam clocking in at close to seven minutes. 'Honey I Just Want You' is spicy blend of styles with a big dash of Dixie. 'Oh Kathleen' grabs you with its catchy Bo-Diddley groove yet the song travels quite a few musical roads as Michael, supported by backing vocals sings, with soul.The King James Sessions is a royal record!
MICHAEL JAMES – EVERYTHING WE USED TO BE: Michael James is a guitarist, keyboardist, producer, singer and songwriter. Michael is a native of Colorado where he fronted a band before focusing on his solo projects, which does include other players. James' music is melodic, acoustic rock with a modern edge. He writes personal lyrics that are serious and soulful. Michael uses a variety of vocal textures to convey assorted moods and tones in his music. Everything We Used To Be is Michael's second release featuring eight expressive songs. The new CD is an evolution of an artist as James continues to define his musical vision and mature as a writer. Michael is a genuine artist singing songs about life experiences that people can relate to and thus connect with him. 'Lost In You' is the opening track with haunting, intriguing lyrics in a layered, acoustic arrangement. 'Room To Breath' is heartbreaking, honest and hopeful – lyrically, musically and vocally. Michael James is a compelling and convincing performer and Everything We Used To Be is intricate and original!
MICHAEL MCDAETH – RUSTED ON THROUGH: Rusted on Through is the latest release from singer/songwriter Michael McDaeth. He plays guitar and harmonica on this eleven-track collection. Michael is also a member of the band Weeds who have an album coming out too. McDaeth's songs are whimsical but are often dark observations on life. Michael's music is acoustic based with a punk attitude. The production is stark focusing more on lyrics and subtle unplugged guitar and harp accompaniment. His voice is somewhat raspy but he has a versatile expressive range. Michael's press kit describes his singing as "whiskey and Kool Aid". McDaeth's music is a varied brew of acidic lyrics and sweet acoustic sounds that is hard to describe. The arrangements are free wheeling yet executed with intensity. Rusted on Through is a dichotomy of sights and sounds and Michael's songs are haunting and powerful as they traverse over an acoustic landscape.
MICHAEL MCDONALD – THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION: Singer, songwriter and keyboardist Michael McDonald was born in St. Louis, Missouri. In his teens Michael performed in a bunch of local bands but by 1974 he was singing backup and playing keys for Steely Dan. In 1975, he joined the Doobie Brothers and helped launch one of the most successful periods in the group's history. McDonald has also worked with a diversity of artists such as Donna Summer, Kenny Loggins, Aretha Franklin and Patti LaBelle. In 1982, The Doobie Brothers disbanded and Michael has had enjoyed many achievements as a solo artist. Today, McDonald is involved in a variety of projects bringing him back to his musical roots of rock and R&B. The Ultimate Collection spans Michael's career from the mid-seventies into the new century. The nineteen-track collection includes eight Doobie Brother songs and two collaborations. The rest of the CD features a variety of selections from his solo material. Michael's familiar voice is still rich and soulful. The CD is expertly produced and includes a booklet with a quick bio and song lists. The Ultimate Collection is a great reintroduction to fan favorites and good exposure to McDonald's ongoing muse with old school music values – a quality CD from start to finish!
MICHAEL TIERNAN – STILL LISTENING: Still Listening is the latest release from contemporary composer, singer, guitarist and producer Michael Tiernan. He sites a variety of influences such as Joni Mitchell, U2 and Steve Earle who subtly find their way into Tiernan's work. Michael started playing piano at a young age and later picked up drums and guitar. Over time Michael focused more on the acoustic and his songs developed into mellow music geared toward relaxing and reflection. Michael's music is mainly folk rock with shades of the blues and bluegrass. Tiernan is a scholar and a cancer survivor who has traveled the world and incorporates these experiences into insightful visual lyrics. Michael' writes intelligent songs that are serious yet hopeful. This fourteen-track collection features textured tones and heartfelt vocals. The production is stark and straightforward with some layered vocals. The main focus is guitar and singing. 'Drive' ,'Bullet Train' and 'Better' were my favorites featuring fine guitar work and rich vocal expressions!
MILE POST NINE – DRIFT: Drift is the first full-length release from Mile Post Nine, a northern Virginia quintet that formed in the spring of 1998. Their music has been compared to the Dave Matthews Band and they site a diversity of influences including The Grateful Dead, The Police and Rush. Their style is a fusion of rock, pop and jazz. Drift is a varied mix of electric guitar driven music, funky rock jazz blends and songs that are acoustic based with a folk flair. There is something for everyone on this twelve-track collection. Drift is expertly produced by Ted Comerford and flawlessly mixed by Mitch Easter who has worked with REM. Mile Post Nine has toured the east coast from New York to the Carolinas and have shared the stage with act such as They Might Be Giants and Cracker. They previously released 2 EPs which received airplay and Drift is sure to continue this trend. They write intriguing lyrics that cascade into the soundscape of the CD. Although I enjoyed all the songs on this free flowing collection, I really enjoyed the first three tracks. They smoothly drift into one another and include intriguing improvisational jams. I liked the spacey funky vibe of these three songs in which rock and jazz sounds magically surge together. Drift is a tapestry of musical textures that captures the talents of Mile Post Nine.
MILLION DOLLAR MOUTH – SAY MY NAME...NOW SAY IT AGAIN: Million Dollar Mouth is a quartet based out of Los Angeles, California. Each member comes from a diverse musical background but when they formed Million Dollar Mouth and started performing live it all gelled. Within a short time they had perfected their stage show and built a following in a volatile music scene. Their sound is an original yet diverse mix of influences from grunge, pop, punk and rock. Million Dollar Mouth's eleven-track, debut is power packed with hard driving rhythms, edgy guitars and energized vocals. The band has a 2005 summer tour planed to support the CD and are hoping to take Europe by storm in the spring of 2006. Two of their songs will be featured in an upcoming horror film entitled Dimples. 'Stupid Like Me' and 'In A Garbage Can' start the CD off strong with their forceful guitars, robust vocals and torrential beats but the rest of the album is potent too. The band's distinctive hard rocking sound and compelling lyrics make Million Dollar Mouth a winning proposition!
MIKE MARINO & HIS RESTLESS SOUL – OUT OF THE DARKNESS: According to their publicist - Mike Marino is a singer/songwriter and guitarist who is insightful, subtle and explosive on his latest vintage flavored Americana Roots Rock release. Mike and his Restless Soul draw inspiration from the days growing up on a South Jersey farm in the magical era of the 60's & 70' with combustible intensity fueled by the constant erosion of the American Heartland. Mike writes music for our times while drawing comparisons to rock icons from the previous generation like Cougar, Petty and Springsteen. The song "Twenty Too Late" alludes to missing this bandwagon just like previous artists just missed the party in the 60's. "Marie Jean" is classic and mid-tempo plaintive shout out to a member of the opposite sex. "One Man's Destiny" sounds like rockers from Bruce's The River meets the Jefferson Airplane flying with The Byrds - all of Marino's worlds collide on this one fateful track. Marino does enough good work on Out Of The Darkness to get him some spotlight action - and don't miss the standout lead guitar work of Mark E. Johnson!
MIKE ROCKET – THE TIME HAS REACHED THE FUTURE: The Time Has Reached the Future is the latest release from New Jersey singer/songwriter Mike Rocket. In addition to lead vocals Mike is also a guitarist. He is joined by other talented players to give his twelve tracks CD a full sound. Rocket is clearly influenced by Bruce Springsteen. In fact, Mike sort of looks like The Boss and also sounds like Bruce. Mike's vocals are smoother and less gravelly than Springsteen's. Mike sings his insightful songs with crisp clear vocals. Rocket also appears to appreciate the sound of the E Street Band. Expressive keyboards, sassy sax and stellar guitar leads are found throughout his music. Yet, despite these similarities Mike has crafted fresh modern songs that are uniquely his own. Rocket is a regular on the New York City club circuit and his originals have been played on major area FM radio stations. 'Erin' is a poetic song about a girl. Masterful musicianship, feisty sax and expressive vocals set the tone for this song and the proceeding tracks. 'Hey Bruce' is a great story about meeting The Boss outside The Stone Pony. A feisty beat, fiery guitars, flamboyant keys and funky sax complete the tale. 'Philly Blues' is a soulful montage with a city blues feeling. Mike Rocket has captured the classic Asbury sound in a contemporary format that should appeal to Bruce fans and beyond!
MISS KRISTIN – YOU CAN'T HIDE LOVE!: You Can't Hide Love! is the latest release from singer, songwriter, guitarist and keyboard player, Miss Kristin. This multi-talented lady has been inspired and compared to Christine McVie and Grace Slick. Miss Kristin is a strong singer and has full command of her music. She started playing guitar at age thirteen and has written over one thousand songs. Miss Kristin's music is a blend of progressive modern pop with plenty of rock. Some songs such as 'Fallen Star' include soaring guitar parts to complement Miss Kristin's expressive vocals. This thirteen-track collection is diverse ranging from ballads to rockers. She has a sultry voice and brings power and passion to her lyrics. Diversity of style and moods combined with thought provoking lyrics makes her third release a strong one. 'Wait' and 'You Can't Hide Love!' are other noteworthy tracks on this CD. Miss Kristin is an impressive, versatile vocalist and she shines on You Can't Hide Love!.
MISTIC REIN – DEJA VOODOO: Mistic Rein is an artist quartet, creatively blending a diverse array of instruments into modern rock compositions. The band is fronted by Iris Mareina, a high range vocalist with flair. Deja Voodoo is a ten-track mystery, where each song takes a surprising turn. A number of notable songs, 'The Mistic Rein' and both versions of 'If You Were Mine' aptly apply Middle Eastern textures with funky rhythms and rock solid guitars. 'Dreamin' floats on ambient beats and tones contrasted with a contemporary edge. 'Libra' has a catchy rhythm, expressive vocals with horns that give the song a jazzy flair. Mistic Rein is an original band with a sundry pallet of colorful sounds and styles. Deja Voodoo is an eclectic blend of ethnic sounds and contemporary rock styling that is innovative and intriguing!
MOFIUS – LOST & FOUND: Mofius is a four man band based out of Seattle, Washington. Their sound is a magical meld of funk, pop, rock and soul. Lost & Found is a three song EP released in advance of their full-length CD, which is scheduled to come out later this year. In the mean time, Mofius is building a strong reputation for impressive live shows. Their music is heavy on rhythms and stellar guitar leads. Mofius pens sharp lyrics that are sung soulfully by lead vocalist Alfonzo Woods. 'Lost and Found' features a subtle reggae groove combined with diverse rhythms. The guitar parts are strong as Alfonzo sings this love song with passion. 'Mother Earth' is a funky anthem calling people to reach out to those in need and sharing our mother earth. The song has a danceable beat blending with a meaningful message. 'Silly Assumption' flows on a funky base line and weighty drum strokes along with some sizzling, guitars leads. Mofius is an energized, funk band and their three song EP clearly demonstrates their imaginative and instrumental potential!
MOFIUS – MOFIUS: Mofius is an inventive quartet crafting their own unique blend of funk, soul, rock and danceable grooves. Mofius' sound is familiar yet fresh, drawing on various influences including Fishbone, Marvin Gay and Parliament-Funkadelic. Mofius is tight with lots of heavy rhythms (Chris Martin drums & Tony Rivera bass) and lush guitars (Dave West) flowing over Alfonzo Wood's smooth, soulful voice. Their self-title, ten-track CD is colorful with captivating beats and hooks. Mofius' songs are well written, filled with visual lyrics. The CD starts off strong with "The Cheat" an up-tempo tale of a relationship gone wrong, expressive told by Alfonzo. "Mother Earth" is insightful and innovative with weighty rhythms and instrumentation. "Reverberate" is a sensual, snappy tune that just keeps moving. Mofius is an energetic CD and the band is deep, diverse and divine!
MONICA ATTELL – BAND GEEK: Monica Attell is a singer, songwriter, pianist and a classically trained flautist with a masters from Boston Conservatory. Monica has an eclectic history of musical experiences and interests ranging from classical, jazz, gospel, punk and rock. Attell is a versatile vocalist who can handle ballads to brawn. She pens witty lyrics and cites her brother David Attell the comedian as her inspiration. Monica rounds out her original sound with the help of bassist John Propper and drummer Todd Budich. What makes Monica's songs different is the lack of a traditional guitar. Attell has a solid rhythm section but chooses to convey melodies on the piano and sometimes flute. 'In My Head' flows on an up-tempo beat lead by the piano and accented with some animated flute parts. 'I'm Right' is a rocking, in your face track with the flute and piano sections adding flare. All ten-tracks on Band Geek have something unique to offer and Monica Attell is in a class all by herself!
MOONRAKER – MOONRAKER: Moonraker is the self-titled debut from Boston based Moonraker. Soon after the band formed they had a busy year playing along side Joan Osborne, Ice T and the Disco Biscuits to name but a few. Moonraker's live performances were getting rave reviews and their singles were receiving airplay and awards. At this point, this young band knew it was time to record a full length CD. Their music is a hybrid of rock, electronica, trance and jazz. The five members of Moonraker come from diverse backgrounds, which gives their songs character, depth and variety. Dan Chen the keyboardist is a classically trained pianist. Khodayar Akhavi, the self taught bassist with Daniel Mintzer on drums provides the backbone beats for the band. David Moltz the guitarist is an innovative player and lead vocalist Kelli Scarr is a versatile and passionate singer. This ten-track collection is a cornucopia of sounds, moods, styles and visual imagery that is well produced. This music is cutting edge. I enjoyed the entire CD but the first two tracks 'Shalom' and 'Courageous World' were the gems with powerful lyrics, edgy rock tones and ambient instrumentation. Moonraker has star potential and they are on the rise!
MORE THEN I – U: U is the debut release from More Then I. The band started out as an acoustic trio and later plugged in as their songs evolved. They are currently playing clubs in the tri-state area in support of U. This New Jersey band plays an eclectic mix of modern rock with shades of pop and emo. This ten-track collection is expertly engineered by Don Sternecker who has worked with Peter Gabriel and Blues Traveler. Arrangements are fresh and versatile. Meaningful lyrics about relationships are sung with depth and emotion by lead vocalist Marc Goldberg. He is joined by Tim Quick who plays guitar and bass and Dan Scott on drums. 'Tonight', the opening track has an intriguing beat and fluctuating fretwork. It is an attention grabber with layered levels. It is followed by 'Why Can't She Be Mine' which is the first single released for airplay. It has vibrant visual lyrics, artistic arrangements and a catchy hook. 'Save Your Breath' has powerful percussions, a funky beat and harmonizing slightly angry vocals. U is more than just a rock CD as it crosses musical disciplines with style and plunk!
MORRISSEY – LIVE AT EARLS COURT: Morrissey appeared on the music scene in the early 80's as the lead singer for the band The Smiths. The Smiths were big in Britain and more of an underground group in the states. In their seven-year history they released seven albums and a bunch of singles. Since 1987, Morrissey has pursued a solo career working with different collaborators and has had more success in the states as a solo artist. Morrissey is known for his wit, controversial statements and poetic lyrics. He has a theatrical flair and his passionate, baritone voice is still polished. Live at Earls Court was recorded in London over a five day period towards the end of his "You Are The Quarry" tour. Morrissey is still a popular live performer as he is considered a figurehead in the modern alternative-rock movement. He is in good voice and is clearly an accomplished performer. Morrissey is backed by a first rate band supporting him with guitars, bass, horns and piano. The CD is well produced, besides audience cheers at the end of each song this eighteen-track collection is crisp and clean. The CD offers a diversity of music from Morrissey's most recent release You Are The Quarry to Smiths' classics. He also sings a choice selection of his own hits as well as B-sides and rarities. The CD is strong as a whole spanning two plus decades of dramatic music and giving Morrissey fans a variety rather than just a best of collection. I have read a number of other reviews for Live At Earl Court and the general consensus is Morrissey is back with a vengeance and this CD is the culmination of 2004, a banner year for Morrissey. Sit back and enjoy!
MOSES GUEST – MOSES GUEST: Moses Guest is the self-titled release from the band Moses Guest. The name of the group is a tribute to Graham Guest's 5th generation grandfather. Graham aka Moses is the singer/songwriter of all seventeen songs found on this comprehensive collection. He is joined by James Edwards who has a jazz history, on drums, percussion and backing vocals; Jeremy Horton on bass who has played in funk and metal bands; and, Rich Thompson on piano, organ, mandolin and backing vocals also comes from a funk tradition. Moses Guest was produced by Dan Workman who has worked with Destiny's Child and ZZ Top. The core members come from a variety of musical backgrounds but converge into an impressive improvisational group that incorporates jazz, pop, funk and country into a fresh blend of southern rock. Moses Guest is clearly influenced by jam bands and each member demonstrates proficient musicianship. They form a cohesive, tight unit. Guest writes philosophical songs that are skillfully arranged. The band creates a very rich full sound and the instrumentation is outstanding. It is difficult to pick favorites from this 2 CD set as each track meander smoothly into one another and than subtly changes beat tempo and tones. The jams sessions are innovative and imaginative. Moses Guest is good time; southern fried rock at it's best! MOUSE – TALES: Tales is the second release from the acoustic duo Mouse. Mouse is the story of a boy meets a girl in a smoky pub to form a group. Since then they have played hundreds of live performances throughout England. Mouse is Martha Tilston on lead vocals and rhythm guitar and Nick Marshall on lead guitar and backing vocals. Mouse's influences include Joni Mitchell, Lamb, John Berry and Nick Drake. Their music is described as nu-folk, their sound is soft and simple with very little additional instrumentation yet they create rich mesmerizing music. Their lyrics are imaginative and personal addressing themes of nature, love, life and seasonal changes. Martha's vocals are soft and strong she sings with passion and has a wide range. Nick's guitar flows smoothly throughout demonstrated a variety of styles such as finger picking and baroque. The opening track, 'Big Green' is filled with imagery, Martha's strong velvety vocals merge into Nick's fluid guitar blends. 'By the Lake' has soft almost choppy guitars that create a subtle beat that complements the ebb and flow of expressive vocals that are versatile and dynamic. Tales is expertly arranged and produced. MOVIE STAR KISS – STARTING OVER: Movie Star Kiss stemmed from Supercrush, which was founded by Ronnie Day (guitars) and Ryan Michael (vocals & guitar). The new band includes a high powered rhythm section propelled by Bill Wheeler on drums and Derek Bayer on bass. Movie Star Kiss is guitar driven with captivating choruses and a bit of emo. Their sound is a blend of classic and modern rock with comparisons to the Foo Fighters and Weezer. Their latest ten-track CD is full of energy and excitement. The album opens strong with "Getaway" a catchy yet edgy tune and is followed by "Let It Ride" which flows on a driving beat, fast guitars and snappy chorus. The CD continues to build momentum to the climatic closer "Starting Over". Movie Star Kiss is a diverse, dramatic band and Starting Over is a fresh new start for the former Supercrush!
MULLER AND PATTON – MULLER AND PATTON: Muller and Patton are a dynamic duo of multi-instrumentalists who share a similar musical vision. Their self-titled debut features eleven-tracks with plenty of harmonies that reminded me of Squeeze. Jaye and Ben site an assortment of influences including The Beatles, Queen and David Bowie. Their melodic pop has a theatrical flair as it blends both classic and contemporary rock styles. 'MaryLou' is a slower paced song featuring rhyming, descriptive lyrics about an unhappy girl and harmonies suggestive of The Beach Boys. Piano, strings, bells, and wood block percussion add depth to the story. 'Life Preserver' has a quirky flow from a smooth start picking up the pace right before the snappy hook. Horns and harmonies combined with thought provoking words add to the drama. 'Girl in a Restaurant' is full of potential as Ben sings about an attractive stranger in a café as horns and piano adds spice to the arrangement. Muller and Patton bring a fresh perspective to pop/rock with their intelligent lyrics and bubbly arrangements!
MUNKEY JUICE – MUSIC FROM THE MOTION PICTURE MOSCOW: Munkey Juice is an indie-punk band founded by the Heise brothers in 1995. Both Nelson and Robert play guitar, bass and sing. Since their inception, they have released eight full length CDs and four EPs. Their latest album features additional players from the Minneapolis rock band Roscoe. Music From The Motion Picture Moscow is a two disk, twenty-four track epic about "heartbreak, revenge, hope, love and redemption". The two-dozen songs are a mix of melodic punk to more erratic, frenzied arrangements. The music is edgy and energized, exploring a range of tempos and textures. I found the second disk to be the stronger of the two with more cohesive songs but each CD has something interesting to offer. Munkey Juice has had a fruitful decade and their motion picture sound track culminates it with moody, hell-raising music!
MURRY WOODS & TANGLED BLUE: VOLUME I & II: Murry Woods is a guitar gem hiding in the Texas dust! We recently received two disks from musician Murry Woods. Tangled Blue is a ten-track compilation that was recorded and released in 1996 and Tangled Blue II is a twelve song CD that was put out in 2002. Both are guitar rock and blues collections. Murry Woods is a singer/songwriter from Austin, Texas. He also plays keyboards and impressive guitars reminiscent of Stevie Ray Vaughn. Woods has been playing since he was ten and graduated from Texas Tech University with a degree in music. Murry works in the real estate business when he is not writing and performing. His wife assists him with promotion and bookings. Woods has deep husky vocals well suited to the blues and the soulful lyrics that he sings. Murry's songs are well constructed and his bassist and percussionist are top notch. Wood's music is energizing and his guitar playing is smoking! I thoroughly enjoyed both disks. On Volume One, the opening track 'I Feel Like Runnin' speeds along on down home rock flavored blues with spicy guitar solos. 'Up and Gone' has jams that SRV would be proud of. Murry plays and sings with heart and soul. The bass and percussions are dynamic. This track glides into 'Climate Control' another hot guitar laden song with complex hooks and a very cool groove. On his more recent release I particularly liked 'I Can't Be' which starts off with starling chords then moves into a soft reflective tone merging into a catchy hook line and fine guitar work. 'How Many Times' with its sorrowful opening chords, snappy beat, questioning vocals and stirring guitar rifts is one of many moving tracks. Murry's songs have a tendency to flawlessly flow one into another as the moods and tones subtly change. Murry Woods and Tangled Blue One and Two are pure diamonds in the rough world of processed music.
NANCY MCCALLION – NANCY MCCALLION: Nancy McCallion is a singer-songwriter, producer and guitarist who was formally in the band The Mollys. Nancy's self-titled solo debut features a team of talented musicians adding traditional country and rock instrumentation to her thirteen track CD. McCallion's music blends country, folk and roots rock with a dash of Tex-Mex and Irish heritage. Nancy writes sharp songs which are often about women seeking balance in relationships and work. Nancy is a versatile vocalist and she uses a diversity of tempos and musical textures to convey her astute observations. I particularly liked the tracks found in the middle of the CD. 'Money's Moving Up' is an up-tempo country tale about a marriage drifting apart as the husband returns to his rich roots. The animated jam in the middle features a fiddle and bold guitar work. 'Reckless Child' has a more serious tone with a banjo and harmonizing vocals. The innovative instrumentation and storytelling melded a Native American style with an Irish flair. Nancy's vocals are rich as she sings about a child at war in a foreign land and a mom fallen sick. 'Ain't Makin' Love' has a snappy rhythm, strong vocals and layered guitars. Nancy McCallion and her band have cooked up an assorted, flavorful mix of music!
NATALIE MERCHANT – RETROSPECTIVE 1995-2005: Natalie Merchant has been a serious writer since a young age. Natalie began her musical career in the band Ten Thousand Maniacs at age seventeen, penning songs about social issues and other heady topics. In 1994, she left the group to pursue a successful solo career. Since then, she has collaborated with an assortment of interesting artists and has supported many good causes. Ms. Merchant states that Retrospective 1995-2005 "gave her an opportunity to look back at the events and people that influenced her and her compositions". The CD is beautifully package with extensive liner notes that lists the musicians and inspirations behind the songs chosen for the collection. Natalie's classics have been remastered and they are still just as relevant today. The CD demonstrates that Natalie is an incredible, versatile vocalist and thoughtful writer. Retrospective 1995-2005 defines a decade of quality songs and disk one is a good introduction for new fans. The limited edition second disk includes live and rare tracks that should appeal to veteran listeners.
NATALIA NAZAROVA – FASHION: Natalia Nazarova is a Russian actress and singer. Natalia is classically trained and has studied music at the Russian Academy of Theatrical Arts. Nazarova's style is an original mix of classic and contemporary music blending dance, electronica, pop, traditional and world. Natalia has an expansive vocal range that adds even more variety to her thirteen-track debut. Natalia's songs are well written with some lyrics reflecting her unique East European heritage. The CD opens with "No Excuse" with its hard-edged rhythms and vocal inflections. The song is further enhanced by electronic programming and deep textures and tones including a searing guitar. "Lipstick Gun" combines dance beats with whispering vocals and effects leaving the listener lost in the world of international espionage. "Dark Eyes" flows on slow seductive singing and instrumentation, gently building momentum and passion as the song progresses. Natalia Nazarova is captivating and makes a statement with her debut Fashion!
NATHANIEL STREET-WEST – WITNESS: Nathaniel Street-West may be a young musician but he has already been described as a very old soul by collaborators. Nathaniel's influences include the blues and The Doors, which slyly find their way into his original, serious songs. Nathaniel's music is modern and filled with emotion. The fifteen-tracks on Witness explore many moods in arrangements that range from dynamic to those that are more stark allowing dramatic silences to tell the tales. The CD is mostly a live recording with Street-West performing with a group of talented players. The CD was expertly produced by Mark Howard who has worked with Dylan, REM and U2. Witness is a journey with insightful commentary on politics, religion and the tragedy of war. The CD is strong as a whole but I particularly like the opening track 'Give Me A Witness' with its funky guitar and lap steel effects mingling with lots of percussion and a Wurlitzer. 'Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee' is haunting with its dark, strange instrumentation and mournful vocals. Nathaniel Street-West is a journeyman perfecting his craft and creating meaningful music along the way!
NEIL RAMBALDI – PERPETUAL HORIZON: Perpetual Horizon is the debut solo release from New Jersey guitar virtuoso, Neil Rambaldi. Rambaldi has been recognized for his high quality of musicianship and professionalism by Tonos.com, guitarist Steve Vai and the New York/New Jersey club scene. Neil has done lots of session work that spans a wide range of styles such as rock, Latin, R&B, metal, blues, new age and classical, all of which find their way into Neil's diversified collection. Perpetual Horizon is an eleven track assortment of instrumental songs loaded with heavy guitars. Rambaldi produced, wrote and performed all of his own material. In addition to being a skilled guitar player he handles the bass, keyboards and drumming programming with expertise. Every track on this CD is a winner. 'It's Time' ebbs and flows with its slow, sultry start to its hard driving jams. 'Personalities' is expressive with fast furious guitars and high energy. 'Funky Brew' as the name implies is a great mix of guitar, funky sounds and wild percussion that is spell binding. Perpetual Horizon is majestic like the setting sun and should insure Rambaldi a perpetual place on the music horizon.
NELSON FOLTZ – THE LONGING HOURS: The Longing Hours is the debut jazz release from trombonist Nelson Foltz. Nelson was born in Pittsburgh and in college studied with the legendary Matty Shiner. Later Foltz toured internationally with a number of major Broadway shows. He returned to New York to record his own material, which is found on this his first solo effort. Nelson is also the arranger and producer of this twelve track collection, which include six of his original compositions. Foltz describes his CD as a "late night-chill out, touch song/unrequited love record that is chopped full of alpha waves". Other talented jazz players join Foltz. This collection is not only a showcase for Nelson's trombone but also an opportunity for the other musicians to excel and play solos. The Longing Hours was recorded over a three year period. It evolves from traditional jazz sounds to the more experimental modern jazz style. It is a solid collection of slow steady songs with a variety of moods and musical flavors. The lead and backup female vocalists are soulful and add a smooth silky touch to the expert instrumentation found on this CD. The Longing Hours is skillfully produced and very cohesive. I would consider this CD a more traditional jazz record as the guitars are very subtle as oppose to some other forms in which the guitar is the main focus. Nelson's style emphasizes the horns, soft piano and an easy slow flow. Foltz and company bring artistry to The Longing Hours, a well crafted jazz record.
NEW AUGUST – FALL: Fall is the debut release from New August - a quartet based out of Charlotte, North Carolina. Their music ranges from soft acoustic melodies to souring guitar-powered songs accented by a strong rhythm section and passionate piano. New August blends contemporary and classic rock with a dash of pop, alt-country and funk. This eleven-track collection has intricate instrumentation combined with compelling vocals and fine production. Joey Auch the keyboardist and lead vocalist has a broad range and maturity. All of their original songs are fresh and innovative. On occasion New August reminds me of the band Train fronted by Paul McCartney, which is a cool combination. 'You're Good' is the opening track, showcasing wide-ranging expressive vocals with a catchy up-tempo beat provided by Trey Walker on drums and Patrick Boyd on bass. Stacey Leazer plays a fine guitar lead, which is a constant throughout the CD. It is followed by 'Yellow Star' the first single from Fall. Exquisite vocals and soaring instrumentation carry the song through a variety of bridge and moods shifts. The title track is also a winner with vocals that rise and fall with stellar instrumentation. New August is captivating and their debut a delight like a fine August day!
NEWFAIR FLIK – SITUATIONS: Situations was composed, performed and produced by Joe Divita and Dan Simone aka Newfair Flik. Both are multi-instrumentalists who sing and are also musical programmers. This fifteen-track, mostly instrumental CD covers a wide gamut. It could be classified as adult contemporary or electronic but it also has progressive rock and surrealistic shades. Varied compositions included atmospheric, experimental instrumentals to songs based on power chords and rhythms. 'Drifting' flows on a steady beat as if floats from gliding harmonies to innovative electronic instrumentation. It casually flows into 'Pipe Dream' a whimsical wistful arrangement. 'Paranoid Euphoria' starts on a happy up-tempo tone, moving into a haunting bridge to wild tones and then returning to a quite more content pitch. A musical montage and a prime example of the diversity these two musicians bring to their songs. 'World and Dreams' has a catchy beat overlaid with dreamy vocals and inventive electronic instrumentation. Joe and Dan are a creative force and their debut CD captures that ingenuity in a variety of situations!
NICK – THE METROGRANDE SESSIONS: The Metrogrande Sessions is the latest release from singer/songwriter Nick DeMatteo. Nick also plays guitar and keys on this eleven-track CD. DeMatteo is supported by talented musicians on drums, bass, synth keys, vibraphones and trumpet. Nick, who is originally from Philadelphia, currently resides in New York City. He has performs both as a solo artist and as a band member. In addition, he is an actor who has appeared on Sex in the City, indie films and commercials. Nick's style is a mix of rock, adult alternative, Britpop and emo. "Think Goo Goo Dolls meets Nine Inch Nails" states Dave Koenig. DeMatteo writes poetic lyrics that are intriguing with dark captivating instrumentation. His emotional narratives have a mysterious stark feel that grabs the listener's attention right from the start. 'Behind the Shadow' consists of provocative lyrics, phantom vocals eclipsed by spirited guitars and a ghostly beat. This is followed by 'Come a Little Closer' with its haunting words and vocals that are both meaningful and mesmerizing. The track is spiked with fine key work that adds richness and depth to this evocative song. 'Scream' despite the title has a gentle flow intertwined with a subtle beat and a trumpet that delicately drifts in and out of the story. The Metrogrande Sessions is a compelling collection of alternative rock songs from the dynamic DeMatteo!
NICK RIFF – MAGICK MUSEUM: Nick Riff started playing the acoustic guitar in high school. Later, Nick progressed to the bass and other instruments eventually returning to the guitar. Riff is a veteran musician having played in a number of successful bands in addition to solo projects and appearances on compilations. After a five year hiatus, Nick the multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter is back. Riff crafts the majority of sounds on Magick Museum an eleven track album that includes some limited edition material. Nick's music is a magical blend of alternative, psychedelic, punk and rock. Nick's production is pretty straight forward but does incorporate some effects including a fuzz guitar. A number of his songs have a retro feel with funky, classic rock textures and tones. The CD opens with the energetic "Freak Element", which combines a driving punk rhythm and guitar parts with a vocal style that would work well on a 60's, pop record. It is an interesting mix of styles, allowing room for a demented jam midway through the song. "Creature Feature" is another creative combination of elements featuring an up-tempo beat and animated instrumentation. Magick Museum is an imaginative CD reflecting the past and present of rocker Nick Riff!
NICOLE MCKENNA – STAY AWHILE: Singer/songwriter Nicole McKenna grew up in a musical household. She started composing songs at a young age and later taught herself to play acoustic guitar. McKenna has graced the legendary stages of CBGB's and The Bitter End to name but a few. She continues to build a strong following and has been referred to "as New York City's best kept secret." Nicole's expertise is evident in her insightful lyrics and polished arrangements. McKenna is a poignant vocalist with a dynamic range. Stay Awhile is Nicole's second release and it is flawlessly produced by Saul Zonana. This eleven-track CD is a solid pop rock collection filled with both realism and optimism. Guitar chords are the driving force behind McKenna's music but subtle beats and tones enhance this genuine collection. The CD opens with 'Shameless' an attention grabber with infectious melodies, a powerful hook line and Nicole's strong, rich vocals. It is followed by 'Take Me Over'. This track showcases McKenna's versatile vocals overlapping textured instrumentation. This song also has a catchy hook line and a sultry tone. 'Ordinary Day' is far from ordinary with dynamic vocals, fluid instrumentation and intelligent storytelling. Nicole McKenna is a powerful singer who has crafted an imaginative soundscape on Stay Awhile!
NIKO – LA TOWN COLORS: Niko was born and raised in Athens, Greece and started playing in bands at a young age. Niko came to the United States for college and since then has traveled and toured the world. Niko is also a scientist with a PhD and is a published researcher. Niko brings his diverse life and musical experiences to LA Town Colors – his second release. Niko's sophomore album is a departure from his first, which used a lot of programming. This ten-track collection captures the spirit and synergy of a live band in a studio environment. Niko has an all-star lineup of guest musician supporting him on this modern rock CD. Niko's has been influenced by dramatic classic rock vocalists such as Morrison, Plant, Pop and most notably David Bowie. His sexy, jet-setting lyrics are mainly about LA but could apply to any major metropolis. This CD rocks from start to finish and features a heavy "Detroit rhythm" sound and quality production throughout. I thought the first three songs were the strongest with their catchy beats and scorching guitar leads. Yet, the whole CD is good, fueled by guitars, high-octane rhythms and Niko's vibrant vocals!
NILS LOFGREN – BREAKAWAY ANGEL & DAMAGED GOODS: Nils started playing professionally at age seventeen when he joined Neil Young's band and handled both piano and guitar on the legendary 'After The Gold Rush' album. Lofgren toured and played on several more of Young's records while forming his own band Grin and releasing solo projects throughout the 70's. In the 80's, this prolific player joined Bruce and the E Street Band for the worldwide 'Born in the USA' tour. Nils also played on several of Springsteen's records. Lofgren continued recording his own material as well as finding time to appear in Ringo's All Starr Band and doing a number of projects with Neil Young and others, than returning to working with Bruce. These two CDs recorded a few years ago demonstrate that Nils is a strong songwriter and producer in his own right. Lofgren is a dynamic guitarist yet he also plays keyboards, Dobro, harmonica, accordion and percussion on these two diverse collections. Break Away Angel features solid rockers and reflective ballads. The lyrics are serious and the songs are well constructed with many guest musicians adding textures and tones to Lofgren's soaring guitar leads. 'Puttin Out Fires' has a snappy groove, soulful vocals and plenty of innovative guitar licks. 'I Found You' features layered rhythms and a bounty of inventive guitar sounds. 'Tears Ain't Enough' juxtaposes the serious topic of poverty with an up-tempo flow accented by a spirited fiddle. The song has a country flavor with edge. 'Driftin Man' is a collaboration with Lou Reed, it starts off slow and reflective as it delicately picks up the tempo with creative instrumentation. The beat is subtle, allowing the guitar and the storytelling to carry the song. Damaged Good looks at the darker side of life and also features an assortment of talented players including Branford Marsalis on saxophone and vocals and even a string quartet. 'Only Five Minutes' starts off with a sassy sax as Nils tells the tale over a bluesy beat with more accents from Marsalis and the strings. 'Trip to Mars' blends ominous lyrics with a lighthearted hook line sung by a chorus of children. In the meantime, Nils and company are creating edgy instrumentation and tense vocals. The contrast is great. 'Heavy Hats' features weighty rhythms, combined with jamming leads and topped off with edgy vocals. Nils Lofgren is a well-respected musician and guitarist extraordinaire. His solo releases are fine examples of why he much is a much sought after commodity yet highly qualified to lead his own bands!
NILS LOFGREN BAND – NILS LOFGREN BAND LIVE: Nils Lofgren Band Live was recorded in June of 2002 at the Rams Head in Annapolis, Maryland. This twenty-three track CD captures the essence and energy of the band's live performances. Nils has been playing professionally since age seventeen. He has worked with Neil Young and is currently touring with Bruce Springsteen as a member of the legendary E Street Band. Nils has played in his own bands and has released numerous solo albums. On this latest CD, he is joined by Wade Matthews on bass, Buck Brown on keys and guitars and Timm Biery on drums. The Nils Lofgren band is polished and tight. Their arrangements are masterful and full of synergy. They brilliantly blend older Nils' songs with his new releases. Fanciful fretwork, harmonic vocals, dynamic beats and cryptic keys are captured on this crisp clean live collection. We had the pleasure of seeing the band live a few weeks after this recording and they were great! Nils is an incredible guitar player and a diversified vocalist. Both disks are packed with stellar instrumentation and scorching guitar solos. On disk 1, 'Too Many Miles' is one of many songs that showcases Nils's amazing guitar techniques captured in a cool deep almost blues vibe. 'Tears Ain't Enough' has a catchy beat, soulful vocals and poignant instrumentation. On disk 2, 'I Found You' is subtle and rich in textures and sounds. It is played with passion and poise. 'Gun and Run' moves on a funky rift accented with cool keys and a soaring solo. Nils Lofgren Band Live is a varied collection of smoldering rock songs, smooth slow ballads and dynamic jams. Enjoy!
NIRVANA – SLIVER THE BEST OF THE BOX: In the early 90's, Nirvana was one of the groundbreaking bands of the alterative rock movement. Their powerful blend of indie, metal, punk and rock appealed to a wide range of people. Nirvana's angry, raw energy was a departure from the pop and programmed songs of the 80's thus fans propelled this underground music to the mainstream. Sliver The Best of The Box features twenty-two tracks from the bigger box set of demos and rarities. The CD runs in chronological order starting with an unrefined, 1985 version of 'Spank Thru' to a 1994 home recording of 'All Apologies'. The tracks range in quality from crude home tapes to in studio recordings. Many of the songs are works in progress and demonstrate how a simple song can evolve into something spectacular. The quality of the music improves a lot over the course of time, although I did get a kick out of track two a live version of Led Zeppelin's 'Heartbreaker'. The boom box versions of 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' and 'Come As You Are' are intriguing and 'Do Re Mi' along with other later songs are filled with potential. Sliver The Best of The Box is geared towards more hard core fans interested in the history of the band and the metamorphosis of music.
NORMAN LAMONT – THE WOLF WHO SNARED THE MOON: Norman Lamont is a singer, songwriter, guitarist and producer. Norman has worked in bands as well as on his own solo projects. Lamont's music draws from a diversity of genres. He has been inspired by Paul Simon, Bowie, Incredible String Band and Fripp. Norman's eclectic songs have a dark side yet his lyrics are clever ranging from straightforward to mysterious. I am still trying to figure out who or what the 'polecats' are. Besides vocals, Norman handles guitars, bass, strings and arrangements on this eleven track CD. Other musicians contribute violins, drums keys, organ and samples giving the songs more character. 'This Horse' has an edgy guitar riff layered over a deep, shadowy bass line as Mary adds her two cents on violin. Norman's vocals are soulful and gritty as he sing this allegoric song. 'The Ballad of Bob Dylan' is epic. The vocals and instrumentation are executed in a Dylanesque way yet the animated organ parts and bottleneck guitar gives the song a unique twist. I really liked the storytelling and funky instrumental breaks that are part of the ballad. Norman's debut release is distinctive in style, structure and his witty words will keep you coming back for more!
NOTLIMAH – SOMEDAY YOU'LL SEE: Someday You'll See is the latest release from Notlimah, which is Hamilton spelt backwards. The CD is "dedicated to all the men and women protecting us from evil." Hamilton W. Shoop III is the main singer/songwriter and guitarist for the project. He is joined by Bryan "Ivory" Sylvester, Ron Smith and Dan Bobick for their additional guitar licks on some of the eight songs found on Someday You'll See. Hamilton has been interested in music since his childhood and has played in a variety of successful bands in the course of his career. Shoop likes versatility and his vocal expressions have been influenced by early Motown crooners. His style is classic rock with a heavy emphasis on guitars. Although I picked up percussion throughout the collection, I noticed little or no bass lines, in some cases the guitars created a funky beat. The guitars are very prominent on this CD. The format on this CD is energizing straightforward rock with soul-influenced vocals. 'I'm Really Sad' has an upbeat tempo, wailing guitars and feisty vocals. 'Dime A Dozen' showcases duel guitar leads complete with high-octane power chords and animated vocals. Someday You'll See is a rocking collection! |
