OHN IN THE END, ALL THINGS BEGIN: OHN is a band of talented players from Austin, Texas. OHN has two guitarists as well as traditional rock and jazz instrumentalists that combine their skills with the modern technology of a beat box and a laptop. Their sound is an eclectic blend of electronic, hip-hop, jazz, rock, soul, techno and world. All ten tracks on their sophomore release feature tight, first-rate musicianship with plenty of passion and spontaneity. The CD is expertly produced as each diverse, song smoothly transitions into the next. OHN explores a variety of styles that range from the funky opening to the soulful close. In between are lush soundscapes of arrangements with some vocals that are dreamy, haunting and playful, often in the same song. The rhythms are catchy throughout and enhanced by loops and samples but best of all are the jams. The title In The End, All Things Begin captures the flow of the CD as one mood ends another begins. A technique used throughout the album as intricate instrumentals move into more experimentation jams. OHN is an innovative group and their latest CD is stellar!
OLGA NOW IS THE TIME: Olga is a multi-talented singer, songwriter and producer. Olga was classically trained in piano, violin and voice at a young age and later she became captivated by the guitar and Jimi Hendrix. Olga is a skilled singer with a wide range. Her execution is crisp and clean or on occasion smoky and soulful. Olga is supported by a brilliant band on her latest twelve-track CD. Olga's music is steeped in the blues with shades of country, gospel, rock and soul. Her songs are contemporary yet they reflect a respect for the deep southern roots of the blues. The CD opens and remains strong with the title track, 'Now Is The Time' - a sultry song with a funky rhythm and smoking guitars including a slide. 'Can You Forgive Me' features a subtle, lush lap steel layered over snappy instrumentation and expressive vocals. Olga is real, rootsy and Now Is The Time for her to take the music world by storm!
OLIO COLOR OF MUSIC: Color of Music is the latest release from Olio based out of Los Angeles, California. Olio is Arif on guitars and vocals and DeHaven on drums and vocals. They are supported by other talented players on bass, keyboards and lap steel. Their music is a magical blend of rock, funk, hip-hop and R & B. They are fans of Prince, Hendrix, Sting and Seal. In 1997, Arif and DeHaven joined forces to create diverse music that breaks down both racial and genre barriers. They write thought provoking lyrics about world issues, the celebration of life and living in the moment. Their musical message is to "be open". This dynamic duo crafts positive upbeat music. The production and instrumentation throughout this ten-track collection is exemplary. Both Alif and DeHaven are passionate soulful vocalists and their harmonies are first rate. Dynamic grooves, soaring guitars and textured vocals are consistent throughout this versatile collection of songs. 'Take A Ride' starts slow, then shift gears to a sexy beat as smooth vocals describe a "typical dance club" scene. Towards the middle, the song kicks into overdrive with a scorching guitar solo moving into more cool beats and slowing down for the close. What a ride! 'Anytime' is a subtle love song in which Hendrix meets hip-hop. It includes a funky beat, masterful guitars and a rich harmonizing hook line. Very powerful! Color of Music is truly a bright vivid mixture of music that should leave you smiling! ONE-EYED JACK BEFORE ALONE: Before Alone is the 1998 release from One-Eyed Jack. This jam band brilliantly blends southern fried rock with a dash of The Dead and Allman accents to create a flavorful eleven track collection. One-Eyed Jack worked with Ron Schreier to produce this flawless CD and the artwork on the cover is wild thus completing a perfect package. Two dominating lead guitars, powerful percussion, rich expressive vocals and beat laden jams effuse their originals. In addition to first class musicianship they write poetic visual lyrics. Being a Deadhead it is hard not to love the music of One-Eyed Jack. They incorporate complex bridge and chord changes with passionate playing. 'Year of the Locust' is infested with mighty guitar leads, funky whah whah chords, omnipotent percussion, swarming eerie keys and dangerous sexy lyrics climaxing in a hard driving jam. 'The Waltz' is a song of searching dancing on smooth slow instrumentation and sweet reflective lyrics. It is followed by 'Cilantro' a Latin flavored track filled with spicy jams, dramatic pauses, zest and plenty of zeal. The CD closes with the philosophical 'This, Too Shall Pass' with lots of faint sound effects including waves crashing on the beach. Depth, drama and passion close the set. Before Alone is vibrant and One-Eyed Jack is a band to keep your eye on! Recommended Tracks: (3,5,6,11) [USA/NJ 1998 - web] (2003 Review by Laura Turner Lynch for Kweevak.com)
ONE-EYED JACK SUNLIGHT BLUE MADNESS: If you put The Allman Brothers, The Grateful Dead, Phish and a dash of improvisational jazz into a blender the flavorful result will be One-Eyed Jack. Despite the comparisons this sextet creates original music that is potent, refreshing and just plain fun! They have mastered free form jamming merging it into a variety of genres including classic rock, bluegrass, funk, psychedelic, gospel and southern rock. Their signature style includes dueling guitar leads, dynamic rhythms and abounding vocal harmonies. In addition to intense instrumentation this New Jersey-based band writes compelling insightful lyrics.Sunlight Blue Madness is their latest release produced by Mark Berry who has worked with Carly Simon and Sir George Martin. This twelve-track collection captures bohemian free style playing in a polished production yet spontaneity is not lost on this studio release. Sunlight Blue Madness is a gem, every song is great! My favorites were 'Pride In your Pain' with its soulful vocals, funky groove and haunting keys. It is followed by 'Copperhead Well' which brilliantly blends southern rock with jams and concludes in the blues. This song is one of many dynamic tracks that has broad bridge and mood changes. 'The Road' speeds along on fast paced bluesy vocals, scorching guitars, a funky beat and crashes into a 7/8 vamp to conclude this wild road trip. 'Time on the Road' is another smoldering track with a vocal duet and guitar leads that would make Dickey Betts smile. Sunlight Blue Madness is an imaginative CD that brings the jam band scene well into the new century! Enjoy!
ONE SHOT DEAL THIS ONE'S FOR YOU: This One's For You is the debut release from PA rockers One Shot Deal. The five and sometimes six proficient players in the band come from a diverse mix of musical backgrounds and all have worked in other groups. By a chance meeting in Media, PA One Shot Deal formed and the chemistry was instantaneous. The first eight songs of the CD were recorded in the early 90's in analog format. The project would not be completed until 2002 when more funds became available. Therefore, the last four tracks were produced and cut in digital. One Shot Deal is patient and the results are crisp clean production and magical musical life stories. All twelve tracks stand the test of time, capturing the essence and energy of rock and roll. One Shot Deal performs in the classic tradition with shades of southern rock to add additional flavor. The main ingredient is sizzling guitar leads and flavorful three and four part vocal harmonies. The CD opens strong with the title track and maintains a high standard throughout. This One's For You has a dozen impressive songs for you!
ONLY NOW EXISTING VOODOO DOLL: Only Now Existing or ONE for short is the invention of James Garrett. James performed, produced and wrote his debut CD Voodoo Doll and released it on his own independent label. Therefore, he is in full creative control of his music. Garrett draws from a colorful pallet of influences including alternative, electronic and rock. Even though Voodoo Doll is diverse there is a prevailing theme to the eleven tracks. Garrett urges listeners to take control of their lives and be "one" self. ONE incorporations samples, drum tracks and sound effects into songs that flow on driving rhythms, forceful guitars and some harmonies. 'Blackout' is dark and daring with heavy guitars and high voltage vocals. 'Mislead' blends atmospheric, techno textures with hard rock tones and some sizzling leads. ONE's CD is unique, versatile and continues to grow on you with each listen. Voodoo Doll is captivating and foreshadows a promising future for James Garrett!
OVERWHELMED FORGOT TO LAND: Overwhelmed was founded by brothers Quentin and Harlan Hagewood both musicians and songwriters. They recruited Brad Lacey to play drums and Kyle Pinion to handle bass, completing the current lineup for this energized band. Overwhelmed's sound is a blend of alternative and hard rock with mood swings. Their songs can be forceful or more introspective. Although their music is rocking there are subtle sound effects, strings and keys added to their mixes. Forgot To Land is their second release featuring fifteen high octane tracks. Brad and Kyle craft driving rhythms as Quentin and Harlan soar on guitar and vocals. The CD opens with 'Early Spring'. The song has an unusual radio message start before kicking into high gear with the guitars. The song slows down a bit for the vocals and then rebuilds its momentum. 'Report' grabs your ear with the sound of an alarm clock moving into a diverse combination of instrumentation, effects and vocals. Overwhelmed will besiege you with poise and power on their high flying Forgot To Land!
P.O.D. PAYABLE ON DEATH: Payable on Death is the self-titled, twelve track release from hard-rocking POD. The band is based out of San Diego, California but are playing beyond the west coast as they are touring with Linkin Park in 2004. POD has appeared at Ozzfest, yet their songs have a strong Christian message. Their latest release is subtler with dark underlying tones. POD's lyrics allude to religious concepts, values and Jesus. The quartet has a big somewhat heavy metal sound with touches of rock, punk and even reggae. 'Wildfire' is the forceful opening song featuring powerful drumming, varied bridges, fierce guitars and scorching vocals. 'Revolution' and the instrumental 'Eternal' included guitar virtuoso Phil Keaggy. Phil's adds depth and drama to POD's extreme energy. The hook phrase on 'Revolution' is the battle cry of the song, teaming up with grand guitars and hard hitting instrumentation. 'Eternal' has a quieter, more reflective tone with Keaggy playing complex expressive leads and Jason Truby on a complementary acoustic. POD plays with passion and intensity and their latest release captures that spirit!
PAPAKOO ACOUSTIC WITHOUT FEAR OF INTIMACY: Without Fear of Intimacy is the seven song plus two bonus track CD from Papakoo. Their first release was produced with a full band. Papakoo touring in support of Raging Optimism had built a solid local fan base. Suddenly Kwaku Aning and Josh Halpern found themselves in need of a bassist and a drummer. In order to keep their name out there and maintain interest in the group, the two played acoustic gigs. Kwaku and Josh recorded their shows, which were well received and became the core of the next album. Without Fear of Intimacy features Aning on guitar and lead vocals and Halpern also on guitar and backing vocals. The arrangements are straightforward with fine dueling acoustic guitars and vocal blends. Songs range from ballads to edgy. Kwaku is a soulful vocalist and sings in deep rich tones. It is difficult to pick a favorite on this CD as all the songs are good and the liners notes imply that there is a flow of ideas from one song to the next. Papakoo Acoustic is provocative and this diverse CD is a winner!
PATTI DEROSA PARADISE: Patti DeRosa is a guitarist, singer and songwriter who was formally a steel drummer and social activist. Patti started playing guitar and penning songs at age thirteen. She moved to Boston to pursue her masters in social work but continued to perform in local clubs. Recently she released Paradise, her twelve-track debut of contemporary folk rock. DeRosa has a seasoned voice to tell her story like songs that range from comical to serious. Her lyrics are filled with imagery contrasting with minimal production. Her songs feature a few other instruments but it is mainly Patti and her Martin D-45. Each song has something to offer but I particularly liked the cutting commentary of 'Beside The Pretty Church' with its gentle guitars and DeRosa's crisp vocals. 'Paradise' has a snappy rhythm and soft rapping descriptions of a trip to Magen's Bay complete with some subtle island effects. Patti DeRosa brings warmth to her well written, meaningful music and Paradise is a folk rock delight!
PATTY BLEE DISGUISE: Disguise is the latest release from singer/songwriter and acoustic guitarist Patty Blee. Patty is joined by an all-star processional cast of players whose credentials include Bob Dylan, Tom Waits and Bruce Springsteen. Disguise was engineered by Shelly Yakus who has worked with John Lennon, U2 and Madonna to name but a few. Clearly Blee is well respected in the industry and her thirteen-track collection is a hidden gem. Disguise is masterfully produced and filled with dynamic instrumentation, full bass lines and soulful vocals. Patty has a smooth powerful voice and she sings with passion. Patty writes visual songs about love and life. Patty's influences include Jackson Browne, CSN&Y and Sheryl Crow. Her music is a magical blend of blues, folk, country and rock. Blee's unique sound is a mix of classic rock and country with a contemporary edge. The CD opens with 'Till I Get enough' which merges a solid rock bass line with a down home flavor. Patty's vocals are crisp and clear and the instrumentation is vibrant. 'I Miss The Way' is a poignant song of dying love sung with passion and wonderfully accented with guitars, percussion and emotion. 'Soul Dancing' is another prime example of Patty's diverse soulful vocals and masterful instrumentation, which is the norm on this CD. There is no hiding the fact that Patty Blee and company are a formidable force and hopefully her music will be revealed to a large listening audience!
PAUL BRUBAKER AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS: and the pursuit of happiness is the debut release from New Jersey singer/songwriter Paul Brubaker. Paul also plays guitar and keys on his solo release. Brubaker is joined by other talented Jersey artists to create an impressive ten track CD. and the pursuit of happiness is a fine contemporary rock collection with plenty of percussion and other great sounds such as the tenor sax, the soprano sax, trumpet, flugelhorn and string instruments. Paul's style has aptly been described as Barenaked Ladies meets Elvis Costello with a dash of Weezer and Fuel. Brubaker's music is energetic, edgy and has a soft alternative flair. Paul writes intelligent well-constructed songs about life's thorny issues. His music has catchy hook lines, impressive guitar chords and polished production. Paul sings with emotion and his vocals are warm with smooth edges. The opening track 'Miserable Princess' captures all of these elements and showcases Paul's thought provoking lyrics. This song is captivating. 'That's What I Want' starts off slow and reflective moving into a funky beat and subtle guitar work that flows into a cool jazz grove. The song ebbs and flows under interesting bridge changes and intriguing instrumentation. It is followed by 'Elaine' another catchy tune with blissful bass lines, solid fretwork and demonstrative vocals. and the pursuit of happiness is a solid collection of power pop tunes by Paul Brubaker a versatile stylish musician!
PAUL COTTON FIREBIRD: Paul Cotton, Poco's longtime lead guitarist and master of the art of visual stimulation through music, has produced a very fine new CD, Firebird. After 10 years without new music from Paul, this CD is truly a joy for all of his many fans. When you listen to any of Paul Cotton's music, you can't help but be drawn into the imagery his music and lyrics evoke. This CD is no different and may be some of his best work ever. The CD contains 11 tracks two of which - "Ride The Country" and "Bad Weather" - are remakes from his Poco contributions. The CD opens strong with "Woman with a Broken Heart," a song with a theme that Paul has made a staple for himself. It's your love lost, love tried type ballad. Sometimes you need to get deeper with Paul on some these songs, because he may not be speaking of your typical love lost. In some of his songs they talk of the love lost between partners in the band situation. There are two favorite new tracks "Firebird" and "Across A Painted Sky." Both of these lyrically evoke the sensation of being in the American Southwest. "Painted Sky" was penned by current Poco partner and master of the pedal steel guitar, Rusty Young. In both of these songs Paul lifts you and transports you to those southwestern scenes and allows you to fill in the painting. The two remakes are very well done, considering both of these were honed to perfection in Poco. "Bad Weather," first recorded when Paul was in Illinois Speedpress, and again with Poco on From The Inside (1971) is a classic Paul Cotton song. Here Paul's voice is a little bit older and little deeper and he receives great backing vocal from Rusty. It also shows off the wonderful pedal steel work of Rusty. For a lover of Poco's version of "Bad Weather," it may take a couple of listens to appreciate what Paul has done in this remake, but it no doubt will become a favorite. "Ride The Country" is a favorite from A Good Feelin' To Know (1972), and the remake here is awesome. The entire CD is fine and worth checking out. Give it a listen you won't be disappointed.
PAUL HURST BRIDGE: Paul Hurst is a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Bridge was his first solo CD that has been recently re-released. Paul states that the eleven tracks on Bridge "harkin back to a more innocent time that brings back lots of memories", yet the songs are still compelling and relevant. Hurst's music reflects his interest in 60s and 70s classic rock combined with the blues, contemporary, folk and pop. His production is straightforward with few tricks allowing his spirited instrumentation and solid vocals to carry his songs. 'Tomorrow' opens the CD with simple drum rhythm and subtle bass line as Paul explores a variety of vocal inflections and guitar rifts. 'More of the Same' and 'Firehouse' are up-tempo, smoky blues based songs featuring spicy guitar parts. The vocals on both are crisp yet have the heart and soul of the blues. Bridge is a solid collection covering a variety of styles that are well played by the multitalented Paul Hurst!
PAUL HURST TIME TRAVELER: Time Traveler is the sophomore release from singer, songwriter, self-producer and multi-instrumentalist Paul Hurst. His music is a blend of pop, classic rock and Americana. The diverse scope of sounds found on this eleven-track collection range from a mid sixty's vibe to contemporary. Production is crisp and clean and Paul is competent on guitars, bass and percussion. Hurst alone is able to create songs that are rich and full sounding. His music includes up-tempo beats, dueling harmonies and plenty of guitar hooks. His well-constructed lyrics are about relationships and self-reflection. Paul states that "it took me so long to make Time Traveler that by the time we got near the end I had gone through so many changes it was like I morphed into a different person." The CD reflects maturity, growth and craftsmanship. 'Working Title' is the spirited opening track with souring guitar work and fine vocal blends. 'Linda Ann' echoes of the Beach Boys in construction and layered vocals. A cool wavy bass line melds with acoustic guitars and a catchy hook line. 'Your Loving Heart' features both six and twelve string electric guitars with a sixties flair, poetic lyrics and soft solid percussion. Time Traveler is poetry in motion!
PAUL MCCARTNEY MEMORY ALMOST FULL: Who knew that at the age of 64 - Sir Paul would release perhaps the most involving, most thoroughly enjoyable and most rocking of his four decade solo career. But that is exactly what he's done. Even the biggest McCartney fan (and I consider myself one of them) would have to admit that as a solo artist McCartney has never made three excellent solo records in a row. There's always a clunker in there somewhere to break up the proverbial hat trick. But "Memory Almost Full", co-produced by David Kahne, coupled with 2005's "Chaos and Creation in the Backyard" and 2001 "Driving Rain" (minus the trite 9/11 anthem "Freedom") adds up to about as an impressive a run as any artist making music today - let alone one that carries the enormous expectations as McCartney. "Memory Almost Full" is a success on ever level. As a songwriter, McCartney finds away to reflect on his own wildly successful past, while still finding truisms that even us non-Beatles can relate to, such as deeply moving "The End of the End," the clever "Vintage Clothes" and infectious "Ever Present Past." And as a singer and musician McCartney continues to astound. "See Your Sunshine" features some of the most impressive 'lead' bass playing since "Rain," while the Brian Wilson-esque harmonies leave you awestruck at just how much he can do with his voice. Same for "Gratitude," perhaps his most bluesy vocal performance since Abbey Road's "Oh Darling." Book-ending this masterstroke is lead track "Dance Tonight" and the finale "Nod Your Head." Both very different songs - the former a sing-along that would seem appropriate around a campfire; the later as simple a rock tune McCartney has ever written - the overarching message is: reflect on your past, appreciate it, learn from it, but don't forget to have a good time.
PERNELL DISNEY SEVERN WAY: Severn Way is the debut release from singer/songwriter Pernell Disney. In addition to vocals, Disney plays guitar. Pernell grew up in the Washington DC area with dreams of becoming a professional hockey player but fate had another plan for him. Disney writes introspective well-constructed songs about relationships, disappointments and hope. His philosophy that is conveyed through his music is the idea of turning lemons into lemonade. Pernell's music is a blend of acoustic rock, loop samples a dash of pop and echoes. His arrangements are straightforward using subtle beats, textured keyboards and dreamy sometimes, spacey guitars. The focus of his music is story telling through honest insightful lyrics. Disney's style has been compared to the "Nick Drake-Duncan Sheik mold". This ten-track collection is crisp and clean ranging from melancholy to optimistic. 'Midnight Detroit' is filled with visual imagery, expressive soft vocals and intriguing instrumentation. 'Time For Tea' has fine guitar work varied tempos and quite but powerful vocals conveying the idea of returning home. Overall, Severn Way is a clever creative work by newcomer Pernell Disney.
PETE MULLER MORE THAN THIS: Pete Muller is a singer, songwriter and pianist from New York City. He has a business degree and had a successful career in finance before turning to his true passion. Music is now his full time occupation. Pete is joined by a multitude of talented players who provide guitars, percussion, strings, keys and horns to Muller's twelve song plus bonus track collection. Pete writes mature, insightful lyrics that are sung from the heart. Muller draws from a range of genres including jazz, improvisational, pop and rock. More Than This is his second release, utilizing a variety of tempos and styles with a strong focus on the piano. 'Still Looking for My Home' is the opening track. It has a subtle drum beat with a touch of strings, combined with rich, reflective piano and vocal expressions especially at the title/hook line. It is followed by 'I Don't Know What to Do', an up-tempo number featuring harmonizing vocals, colorful imagery and light but lush instrumentation. 'Underneath the Ground' is dark storytelling with salient strings and deep textures and tones. Peter Muller blends passion and diversity into his music and More Than This captures that sprit and more!
PETE'S LIFE AS A DOG! TODAY IS LIKE ANY OTHER DAY: Today is like any other day is the latest release from Pete Poumbourios and his mates. Pete is the singer/songwriter and guitarist for the band but he also tours as a solo artist. He is joined by Russell on drums and Phil on bass, who are accomplished musicians. Pete's life as a dog! is based out of Victoria, Australia, where Pete has played lots of shows, made many recordings and continues to promote his music. Pete is influenced by 60's vocals groups, guitar great Jimmy Page, composer Brian Wilson and Lou Reed. Poumbourios' music is a blend of guitar-based pop, catchy hooks and a touch of the blues. Pete writes witty lyrics and straightforward arrangements. Poumbourios sings with enthusiasm and soul. Today is like any other day has solid instrumentation and a whimsical almost carnival feel complete with a faint dark side. Pete sings about relationships and the environment in smooth tones and subtle echoing effects. The title track 'Today is like any other day' begins calm and gentle like a new day and moves into a slightly psychedelic vibe progressing towards the captivating hook line and closing with a steady beat and nice guitar work. '5 seconds to go' has an ominous opening and flows to the bridge where Pete the prophet warns that people's mistreatment of the earth is speeding mankind to the end of history. Pete's vocals contrast from sweet to shadowy and merge well with the dark instrumentation. Today is like any other day is a fun nine-track collection of well-produced, well-played songs from talents from the land down under.
PETER FRAMPTON NOW: Peter was a founding member of the band Humble Pie. In 1971, he left the group in pursuit of a solo career and had the opportunity to work with David Bowie, Harry Nilsson and George Harrison on All Things Must Pass. Frampton became a mega-star in the mid 70's with the release of Frampton Comes Alive, which stayed at the top of the Billboard charts for a recorded breaking five months. Since then his career has had its up and downs but he remains an innovative guitar master. Peter still creates imaginative guitar accessories through his company Framptone, whose hand made tools are used by contemporary artists David Grohl and Richie Sambora to name but a few. Now is Peter's latest release featuring eleven beautifully crafted songs that range from reflective ballads to guitar heavy rockers. Frampton is joined by longtime band mates Bob Mayo on keyboards, John Regan on bass and Chad Cromwell a relatively newcomer on drums. Thus the musicianship on every track is tight and filled with power and energy. 'Verge Of A Thing' is the commanding opening track. The heavy beat and strong guitar leads are mesmerizing and there is more fine fret work to come. This song just grabs your attention and flawlessly flows into, 'Flying Without Wings' which combines a cool bluesy tone with upbeat optimist. It is a juxtaposition of styles with a solid beat, fine key work and of course soaring guitars. 'Hour of Need' is a slower song with some interesting bridge changes and a deep moody beat. This song also subtly features voice effects, part of Frampton's signature sound. Peter's version of 'While My Guitar Gently Weep' is just brilliant. Now is a contemporary CD that blends a variety of styles and sounds ranging from Middle Eastern tones on 'I Need Ground' to classic guitar driven rock to beautiful ballads such as 'Mia Rose'. Peter Frampton is back better than ever!
PETER GRAND PETER GRAND: Peter Grand is the grandmaster of his self-titled debut CD. All songs are written, arranged, produced and preformed by this multi-talented artist. Peter plays piano, keys, bass, guitar and drums on this well orchestrated album. His songs are well written and grandly produced. He describes his music as contemporary piano pop rock. Born in Germany and now living in LA, Peter has a passion for music which clearly comes across in his music. His compositions are straight-forward but poetic. The piano pieces throughout the CD are beautiful and are the highlights of this collection. Peter Grand has a good positive feel to it that creates a relaxing mood. I particularly liked 'Wild As The Wind' which had great instrumentation and a light breezy feel. 'April Rain', the closing track, has a soothing flow and is a great showcase for Grand to demonstrate his piano skills. Peter is also quite proficient on the other instruments that he plays. Overall, this is a grand CD for fans of light rock music. Enjoy!
PETER SANDO CREATURES OF HABIT: Singer/songwriter, Peter Sando has been playing since the psychedelic era. His latest project, Creatures of Habit, blends his 60's roots with modern folk-rock in this 14-track collection. Peter's songs are stories that unfold in well-crafted lyrics. He speaks of counting your blessings, positive relationships and romance. Talented musicians back Peter's clean and concise vocals. Sando plays solid guitar leads on this mostly acoustic CD. 'John Brown' has precise percussion, soft guitars, a fiddle and reflective vocals telling the story of the fight for freedom. 'Dessert Flower' is another social commentary (possibly about Native Americans) with a melancholy tone and fine acoustic guitar work. 'Helpless' combines the sax, piano, the organ and female vocals with a good groove through out. Warning: This CD could be habit forming!
PHAME CHAPTER:FOUR VERSE 15: Phame started rapping in the late 80's but honor, respect and values are important ingredients to his songs rather than the gangster mentality of some rap. Phame melds an assortment of styles that range from classic rock, funk, hip-hop and new wave into his versatile compositions. His songs are universal but influenced by his home base in the San Francisco Bay area. Phame sings in both English and Spanish thus blending his Latino background into his music. Variety is the spice of life and Phame provides plenty of that on this flavorful sixteen-track collection. Phame serves up generous portions of additive beats combined with smoky, expressive vocals with a variety of rhythms. He also worked with different producers and collaborators on this CD. The 'Intro' flowing into 'Remember My Name' are the strong, opening tracks that sets the bar high with beguiling tempos and smooth rapping. 'Make Way' utilizes catchy loops and sound effects layered over dueling vocals. 'I Love Hip Hop' is a fitting tribute to the genre with its funky beat, scratching with sound effects and cool rap. Phame cooks up hip-hop with heart and Chapter: Four Verse 15 is positive and inspiring!
PHIL KEAGGY IT'S PERSONAL: Phil Keaggy is a versatile vocalist, guitarist and composer. He has worked with many musicians throughout the years. It's Personal is his latest collaboration. Keith Moore is the author of ten musical poems that are sung and played by Phil. The CD was produced by both Moore and Keaggy. Keith writes spiritual, visual lyrics and the instrumentation is stark and straightforward. The CD opens with 'Simple', which is filled with images of nature accompanied by a subtle cello. 'Motorbike' is the story of love and growth flowing over delicate guitar chords. 'Whisper' is sung and played softly but the story of weathering storms and learning to be still is loud and clear. 'Smoke' blends the old and modern context of offerings and prayer with smoldering, acoustic guitar leads. 'Job' is a reflective ballad about the man of faith. 'These Hills' features Keith on the background vocals as Phil sings about nature and memories. 'The Blood' showcases Keaggy's ability to sing from high to low ranges in the rich context of the saving grace of Jesus. 'Your Light' has playful, delicate, guitar chords as Phil reflectively sings about God shaping life. 'Lost in You' is sung with rich, expressive vocals stating that we always have a friend in Jesus. 'Irish Blessings' brings Keith back on the BGV for a beautiful ballad about the wonders of Ireland and a prayer for peace between north and south. It's Personal is an intimate look at faith conveyed through lyrical guitar and bass lines and poetic words.
PHIL KEAGGY SPECIAL OCCASIONS & FREEHAND: Phil Keaggy is a guitar genius who has been a vital part of the music scene for over thirty years. Keaggy has released more than thirty albums and has been a guest performer on many more. Phil recently appeared on hard rocking POD's latest release. Keaggy joined his first band at age 13 but gained major recognition for his brilliance in the power-trio Glass Harp. By 1972, he embarked on a solo career focusing on Christian music and occasionally working in other groups. Today he tours and continues to create and produces viable music that is very varied from rock to well orchestrated instrumentals.Special Occasions is a twenty-two track collection of lighthearted covers and originals. It celebrates happy days, family, friends and life. The instrumentation is first rate and the CD ranges from reflective to cheerful and whimsical. 'Happy Anniversary, Love' and 'I'll Be Loving You' are beautiful songs inspired by Bernadette, Phil's wife. They capture the essence and wonders of marriage. I was thrilled to hear an updated version of 'Here and Now' which was a song written for a friend's marriage. Rich and I choose that piece for our first dance at our wedding. Freehand is the second volume of the acoustic sketches series. This twenty-three-song collection is a masterpiece. Phil used six different guitars to create the diverse textures and tones archived on this instrumental CD. The music is vibrant and colorful as Keaggy uses sounds from Spain, Italy, Ireland, Africa, Japan and America. The music is evolutionary, some compositions are complex and intricate and others are described as interludes that will see further development. Every song is magical on this CD yet I liked the soundscapes on 'Cajon Pass', 'Hatch of the Mayflies' and 'The Dance'. I have been a big fan of Phil's since I first saw him live in the early 90's. Keaggy's latest releases are two more reasons to enjoy and respect his music and expertise! Thank you Phil!
PHILIP FOXMAN & PRIME 8 WEST 4TH & CHARLES: West 4th & Charles is the latest release from singer-songwriter Philip Foxman and his band Prime 8. The Australian-born Foxman wrote the 11 tracks on this CD named after an address in Greenwich Village. This New York City-based band uses an array of instruments such as the violin, the mandolin and keyboards in conjunction with traditional rock and roll instruments to produce compelling songs. All the tracks are well-crafted stories that have powerful imagery. There are dark undertones to many of the songs, which ironically are upbeat in tone, a prime example being 'Random Fire.' This music is emotionally charged and captures the urban tone of the band's origins in a unique style that merges various forms including folk rock. The opening song 'Here It Comes' melds various sounds with a catchy hook. 'My Valentine' is a heartbreaking, well-orchestrated song about his dying valentine, which brought tears to my eyes. 'Spanish Armada' has good instrumentation that sends the listener sailing. West 4th & Charles is an interesting mix of songs about NYC, relationships and life in general and a good addition to any CD collection.
