SAINT X HUMAN SHIELD: Human Shield is the debut release from Saint X a four piece rock band based out of Toronto, Canada. They are building a strong following as a result of their fun yet ironic live shows. There style is a blend of modern rock, metal, alternative and clearly avoiding mainstream pop. Influences that are cited and occasionally detected are Staind, Creed and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Saint X uses a diversity of styles combined with powerful percussion, scorching guitars and funky bass lines to create unique cross-pollinating music. They describe their lyrics as dichotomies, which look at youth/maturity and stability/recklessness to name a but a few. This twelve track CD melds various genres into an energizing unique collection of songs. The opening track 'Never-Ending Song' starts off with strong philosophical vocals merging with a solid beat and midway running into dynamic and diverse guitar chords. The song closes with angry vocals and instrumentation. The song flows through a variety of moods that is a technique used through out the CD. The second song 'Jukebox' captures more of this energy with a driving beat, smoldering guitars and echoing vocals combining with livid almost rap like vocals. Again the twist and turns of the song make for an interesting sound. 'Gone' starts on a slower tempo and gradually picks up the pace as the story unfolds. Human Shield is a potent first effort by the diversely talented Saint X!

Larry Hagner, who is the main songwriter and lead vocalist, sings with passion and range. Shofar's sound is solid, reminiscent of other great rock bands yet very original. 'Turn' the title track has the power of an anthem flowing over encouraging lyrics. 'Turn' builds momentum, speaking boldly about freedom in Jesus. 'Faithful' opens with a slow, serious tone gradually shifting direction until the guitars and rhythms soar before returning to the opening pace for the close. Although these two tracks were my favorites, I believe the whole CD has something good to offer. Shofar's music is enlightening and energized with mass appeal!
SIBERIAN MARBLE YIN YOUR YANG!!! DOOR TO DOOR DESERT TOUR: Siberian Marble is currently a one-man operation. Boris Zoubkous writes, mixes and plays all the instruments on this thirteen-track release. Boris is also a visual artist and some of his work is pictured in the 18-page full color lyric booklet that comes with the CD. Zoubkous' music defies genres as his songs blend modern rock with subtle New Age, punk and world overtones. Boris' lyrics are obscure observations about life. His songs are not really stories but vivid thoughts strung together. His vocals are deep and sometimes deadpan layered over tight bass and guitar lines along with innovative sound effects. Unusual jams and textures make 'Disguises For Blessings' intriguing, along with its dark, desperate imagery. 'Remind Me To Save The World' contains more harsh descriptions of a world that needs saving. Boris uses a variety of tempos and tones to convey a feeling of anxiety. Yin Your Yang is not for the faint at heart with its shadowy metaphors entrenched in imaginative instrumentation. Boris Zoubkous is a unique artist who paints poetic songs in diverse musical landscapes!
SIDEREAL DAY ONCE AROUND: Sidereal Day's current line up includes two guitarists, a bass player, a drummer and a keyboardist. Four of the five members of the band sing, thus harmonies are a big part of their music. Once Around is their first, full-length release, which they self produced with Fred Koch. This ten-track collection has a classic rock sound with shades of modern pop and on occasion a country twang. The CD is upbeat with catchy hook lines and crafty guitar leads. The CD clips along at a cheerful pace. 'No Wrong Answer' has a snappy beat propelled by spirited guitars. Harmonizing vocals and sassy keys give the opening track punch as if moves into 'Real Dream' with its edgy guitar riffs and dueling leads. The beat is rock solid and the varied vocals give the song additional texture and tone. S.O.S.D.D. is the closer, it has a bluesy harmonica and the vocals are up-tempo with a country accent. The rocking guitars and beat hit the main point of the song home. Sidereal Day shines brightly on Once Around!
SINEAD O'CONNOR THROW DOWN YOUR ARMS: Sinead O'Connor was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1967. In 1985, she moved to London to compose and record her first record. Sinead has enjoyed much success as an award winning musician and some scorn as a controversial artist. Today, O'Connor is pursuing a new musical and perhaps spiritual direction. Throw Down Your Arms is a tribute to roots-reggae. The twelve-track CD features a diversity of writers and talented players. Over a three-week period, Sly and Robbie expertly produced the CD in a studio in Jamaica. The music revisits classics, sticking mainly to "what the original composers wrote except for key changes that were more suitable for a woman's voice." The album opens up with 'Jan Nuh Dead' a stark piece with focus on singing and words. The rhythms pick up for the rest of the CD, exploring a rich tapestry of reggae instrumentation and Rastafarian history. O'Connor's vocals are poised and she sings the lyrics with passion. 'Marcus Garvey' and 'Y Mas Gan' were my personal favorites but the CD is strong as a whole. It is interesting to hear reggae sung by a woman and the musicianship and production on Throw Down Your Arms is first rate. Sinead thanks many people on the CD and it sounds like she was really touched by the experience. So much so, that O'Connor is donating 10% of the profits from her latest album for the care of the Rasta Elders in Jamaica.
SKERLAK DEAD A WASTE OF OXYGEN: Sherlak Dead and The Salt River Band have compiled an eighteen plus one hidden track CD. The songs look at the highs and lows of life from the perspective of a 50-year-old with a smoky voice. The first five grouping of songs are from 2005 and have a country-rock flavor and feature the best production. Tracks six through sixteen are from 1984 and echo textures and tones from that decade. Sherlak's singing was smoother back then. 'Jersey Shore' from this period is a spirited song about the fun Skerlak had growing up in New Jersey during the 60's. The last few songs date back to 1961. They are a bit raw but capture the sprit of a sixteen year old who is making music for the first time. A Waste Of Oxygen is a mostly up-tempo rock CD that pokes fun at life and aging!
SKIPPINGS DISCS: INDIE WOMEN ARTISTS & FEMALE-FRONTED BANDS SPIDERS FROM VENUS: Spiders From Venus is the latest release from Skipping Discs a northeast independent record company promoting indie musicans and focusing on cover compilations. Spiders From Venus is a play on the David Bowie lyric indicating that this tribute CD features women vocalists and bands fronted by females. This nineteen-track collection showcases creative interpretations of classic Bowie compositions. David himself was cutting edge in the 70's and 80's yet his songs have evolved through the contemporary and fresh ideas of the participating musicians. Many of the paces, ascents and vocal inflections have been changed but the results are impressive. The CD opens with 'Space Oddity' by Pitch Black Dream. Their cover follows the form of the original yet incorporates a more techno sound, which works well in a song about an astronaut. 'Rebel Rebel' by Tegan & Sara featuring Grace Nocturnal still has the edge and energy of the first but the harmonizing female vocals gives it a novel makeover. 'All the Young Dudes' performed by The Switchblade Kittens has a completely different tone with a California flair and subtle changes in the lyrics to reference the west coast. The speed of the song is much faster and frantic in comparison to the Bowie version but interesting all the same. 'Golden Years' by Essra Mohawk in many ways mirrors the original in texture and tone. Essra sounds very much like Bowie, which is a cool trick coming from a girl. Spiders From Venus is ingenious and all the artists and bands show promise and talent!
SKIPPINGDISCS.COM PRESENTS NEW WOMEN ARTISTS LOVE HER MADLY: Love Her Madly is a Doors compilation CD from female indie artists. This nineteen-track CD was produced and distributed by Skipping Discs a small independent record company based out of Massachusetts. They specialize in tribute albums and cover compilations. They handle all licensing, production and promotion and musicians receive royalties for their work. This reinterpation of The Doors music is quite timely as the founding members of the band are considering touring and recording under the name the 21st Century Doors. These indie ladies have taken creative liberty with many Doors classics to give them a contemporary rock sound. The dark mysterious carnival music of the original songs has been updated into funky, edgy often hard rocking interpatations. Many of the songs have stronger bass lines and additional instrumentation added a fuller sound to the once simple but amazing Doors format. Of course, female vocals change the pitch of the songs but each artist does these great songs justice. Love Her Madly maintains the sex and intrigue of the originals but each musician brings a unique style to her cover. 'I Look At You' by Krank has Jim like vocal execution but the instrumentation has a harder beat and more powerful guitar cords. 'Take It As It Comes' is also another fine example of an inventive change. The whimsical keyboard solo in the original has been replaced with a jamming guitar. Tone Blonde subtly slips in some of Morrison's poetry reminiscent of a live Doors show. 'Love Me Two Times' by Bernadette McCallion is the closest true interpatation of the original. 'The Soft Parade' by The Saucers is an interesting cover that includes the whimsical keys and tone of the first but there are extra hard rocking guitars and more funky energy. Love Her Madly brings the psychedelic 60's sound into the 21st century with power and imagination!

A very danceable track followed by another song that will keep you on your feet with its subtle beat and soulful vocals. Blue is a colorful CD featuring soaring guitar leads, innovative electronics and expressive vocals. The production is crisp yet creative in its selection of chord arrangements and the use of organic and non-organic sounds. The CD starts off with the melodic 'The Wind Of Your Dreams' a tapestry of imaginative electronics woven into traditional rock textures as subtle vocals thread their way through the story. It is followed by the up-tempo 'Without Love' with its insistent guitars, a firm beat and fervent vocals. 'Empty Heart' is a power ballad featuring Amalia on harmonizing vocals. The instrumentation is reflective yet strong. Slang has a distinctive, energetic sound and Blue has plenty to offer!
SLANG EVERY DAY: In the dictionary "Slang" is the non-standard use of words in a language of a particular social group, and sometimes the creation of new words or importation of words from another language. In the case of this Slang, they've imported elements of western rock to create their own spin on hit music that is anything but standard. Essentially five guys from Bulgaria, Slang is reaching out to the western world with an album's worth of music that should have every day appeal. With modern ballads and contemporary rockers, Slang is an import that contains time tested song craft that could easily yield radio friendly fare if the jocks out there will take a chance on this CD forged behind the old Iron Curtain. 'That Is Why' opens the discs with an upbeat 5:36-long track that gives many reasons why to like this band including the locked in drums and bass that bolster Dimitar Ekimov's raw and appealing vocal clarifications. Peter Glavanov punctuates the tale with measured jolts of lead all tied together with the vocal harmony provide by the 5-man band. 'Colored Shadows' slows it down a bit at the acoustic intro but then soars on its uplifting chorus that contemplates life in a dreamy melody and ends with an exciting and extended keyboard progression. The title track 'Every Day' closes out the 11-song disc with a pulsing and pulsating multi-layered track that showcases the individual members of the band while providing a daily dose of conviction. You don't have to be an insider to understand this Slang so give Every Day a spin today!

Teddie Tapawan covers all the vocals, guitars, bass and percussion on his CDs. In addition, Tapawan occasionally plays keyboard and is responsible for all his own artwork. Teddie states that he likes all kinds of music and he combines his interests to create his own unique sound. Tapawan describes his music as alternative rock mixed heavily with funk, blues, grudge, metal, techno and rapcore. His compositions have many moods but are a cohesive blend of various genres. Teddie has a wide vocal range as demonstrated on his well-produced CDs. Tapawan's songs include solid guitar solos incorporated into funky rhythms. His deep lyrics are supported by full sound. Kweevak received two disks from Smart Apple, entitled Valley of The Dogz and The Adventures of One. Both are jammed packed with first-class diversified songs. Recommended tracks on Dogz include 2 and 4 . 'Procrastination' opens with a weird guitar sound that grabs and carries you to the hard rocking hook and then returns back to the catchy, unusual grooves. 'Breath Like Water' is a prime example of Teddie's ability to successfully blend different genres into one song. Suggested tracks on One are 5 and 6. 'Morning Light' has driving percussion, bullet shot vocals and high-quality guitar work. 'All I Live Is You' is a great ballad with solid instrumentation. Smart Apple is a smart choice for any music collection.
SMITH BROS. LOST: Lost is a breakout, smash-hit effort from the Smith Bros. This three-piece power-pop outfit from Columbus, Ohio delivers edgy, exciting music on their debut CD Lost. The Smith Bros. culls from a diversity of influences with traces of The Beatles, the Smithereens and the Gin Blossoms. They use the best elements from the genres from the 60's to the 90's throughout their 13 tracks CD. Mike Clark, the bassist and one of the two vocalists, writes most of their songs. His voice blends beautifully with Pat Dollenmayer, the guitar player and other singer in the band. The triangle is complete with the solid percussion of Matt Gramly. The sound and style throughout the CD is exciting, with great hooks and up-tempo beats. Songs are well crafted and executed with enthusiasm and energy. 'Without You' grabs you with its first rift and carries you through with rockin' guitars, a solid grove and a great hook line. 'Without You' is under consideration by the Fox Network who might use the track for their new series Undelcared. 'Words Fail Me' is a great blend of musical styles with solid instrumentation and a mysterious feel. 'Walk Away' is another good example of how the Smith Bros. blends various styles to create a great song with their own signature. Overall this is an enjoyable CD but I sometimes had difficulty understanding the lyrics - which could have been intentional - like early REM.
SNAKES-N-ANGELS BACK 2 THE WEASEL RANCH: Back 2 the Weasel Ranch is the latest release from the rock and blues trio Snakes-n-Angels. This band who is based out of North Carolina has two strong lead vocalists, layered beats and smoldering guitar leads. High-octane male and female vocals and towering passions are the norm on this thirteen-track collection. Their musical influences include Clapton, Pink Floyd, Heart and Janis Joplin. Their sound is a potent blend of classic and modern rock with shades of country and an occasional metal edge. Their songs like their name demonstrate duality such as hard rocking tracks followed by subtle ballads. The whole CD has force, catchy hooks and solid musicianship. 'Daze' is an energizing track in which Nannette demonstrates her wide vocal rang with passion and precision. A beguiling beat and stellar guitar work cap off the song. 'Cookin Blues' melds simmering sultry vocals with spicy beats and smoking guitar leads. It is down home blues with a fiery flavor. 'Cry for Justice' is textured with rich zealous vocals, zestful guitar work and a plaintive beat. Snakes-n-Angles is a power packed blues outfit that rocks with emotion and energy! Sadly the fate of the band is unknown as JC Stephenson guitarist, keyboardist and vocalist lost his battle with cancer in March of 2002. Yet, he is alive and well through his music!

They have an all American musical attitude, penning mostly positive songs about universal themes. Son of the Soil is original although they do occasionally sound like classic punk rockers, The Ramones. Born Free is their self produced, debut CD. All fifteen-tracks have an earthy energy. The vintage punk influenced 'Sunshine' opens the CD with a bang with its rapid fire instrumentation and vocals. It is followed by the fractured 'California' with its catchy hooks and galloping guitars. 'New York' is a fun, quirky tribute to the big apple. The rest of the album builds on the momentum, closing with the colorful 'Red Sun'.

He is a masterful musician and each track has persuasive percussion, funky grooves and catchy hooks. Shel is a changeling and his songs subtly change shades and styles like a chameleon. A Guide To Better Living is their fourth release, featuring seventeen songs of sonic explosions. All three core members sing with aggression, the two guitars are crunchy and the rhythm section is hard hitting. The CD pulsates from the opening vocals to the last note. I particularly liked the attitude and force of 'Star Killers', 'Everything Must Go' and 'Slut'. SOS's latest demonstrates that the band is back with raw emotions, boundless energy, passion and potential!

Scorching guitar leads are layered over a heavy beat and Karen's vocals are deep and fiery. 'Situation Opportunist' contains perhaps not the most catchy hook line but it is still entrancing with experimental instrumentation merging into Karen's vocals that are strong, drawn out and dreamy. 'Just A Little Jam...Please' is very retro utilizing low, reverb tunings with haunting vocals. Karen rocks with originality and echoes of the past but is also very modern.

STEEL PULSE TRUE DEMOCRACY & EARTH CRISIS: Steel Pulse was formed in 1975 and named after a famous racehorse. The core members of the band were sons of Jamaican immigrants born in a working class neighborhood in the United Kingdom. As they saw their schools decline and unemployment increase in their town they realized music was a means to keep one's spirits up. In the case of Steel Pulse music was a forum to fight injustice and educate people. Steel Pulse has crafted their own unique brand of reggae incorporating more harmonies with counter melodies and focusing on up-tempo beats. Their music is meaningful, mixing island grooves with political and social commentary. In the 1970s, Steel Pulse opened for Bob Marley and Burning Spear. In the 80's, they took America by storm with the release of True Democracy in 1982 and Earth Crisis in 1984. In 1993, they were the first reggae band to participate in a presidential (Clinton) inaugural event. In 2005, Steel Pulse is still a vibrant force touring and recording new material. The re-release of True Democracy and Earth Crisis is an event. Both records are epic blending eclectic dance tempos with first-rate musicianship. Their lyrics are insightful and meaningful.
