P.O.D. – PAYABLE ON DEATH: Payable on Death is the self-titled, twelve track release from hard-rocking POD. The band is based out of San Diego, California but are playing beyond the west coast as they are touring with Linkin Park in 2004. POD has appeared at Ozzfest, yet their songs have a strong Christian message. Their latest release is subtler with dark underlying tones. POD's lyrics allude to religious concepts, values and Jesus. The quartet has a big somewhat heavy metal sound with touches of rock, punk and even reggae. 'Wildfire' is the forceful opening song featuring powerful drumming, varied bridges, fierce guitars and scorching vocals. 'Revolution' and the instrumental 'Eternal' included guitar virtuoso Phil Keaggy. Phil's adds depth and drama to POD's extreme energy. The hook phrase on 'Revolution' is the battle cry of the song, teaming up with grand guitars and hard hitting instrumentation. 'Eternal' has a quieter, more reflective tone with Keaggy playing complex expressive leads and Jason Truby on a complementary acoustic. POD plays with passion and intensity and their latest release captures that spirit!

PAPAKOO ACOUSTIC – WITHOUT FEAR OF INTIMACY: Without Fear of Intimacy is the seven song plus two bonus track CD from Papakoo. Their first release was produced with a full band. Papakoo touring in support of Raging Optimism had built a solid local fan base. Suddenly Kwaku Aning and Josh Halpern found themselves in need of a bassist and a drummer. In order to keep their name out there and maintain interest in the group, the two played acoustic gigs. Kwaku and Josh recorded their shows, which were well received and became the core of the next album. Without Fear of Intimacy features Aning on guitar and lead vocals and Halpern also on guitar and backing vocals. The arrangements are straightforward with fine dueling acoustic guitars and vocal blends. Songs range from ballads to edgy. Kwaku is a soulful vocalist and sings in deep rich tones. It is difficult to pick a favorite on this CD as all the songs are good and the liners notes imply that there is a flow of ideas from one song to the next. Papakoo Acoustic is provocative and this diverse CD is a winner!

PATTI DEROSA – PARADISE: Patti DeRosa is a guitarist, singer and songwriter who was formally a steel drummer and social activist. Patti started playing guitar and penning songs at age thirteen. She moved to Boston to pursue her masters in social work but continued to perform in local clubs. Recently she released Paradise, her twelve-track debut of contemporary folk rock. DeRosa has a seasoned voice to tell her story like songs that range from comical to serious. Her lyrics are filled with imagery contrasting with minimal production. Her songs feature a few other instruments but it is mainly Patti and her Martin D-45. Each song has something to offer but I particularly liked the cutting commentary of 'Beside The Pretty Church' with its gentle guitars and DeRosa's crisp vocals. 'Paradise' has a snappy rhythm and soft rapping descriptions of a trip to Magen's Bay complete with some subtle island effects. Patti DeRosa brings warmth to her well written, meaningful music and Paradise is a folk rock delight!

PATTY BLEE – DISGUISE: Disguise is the latest release from singer/songwriter and acoustic guitarist Patty Blee. Patty is joined by an all-star processional cast of players whose credentials include Bob Dylan, Tom Waits and Bruce Springsteen. Disguise was engineered by Shelly Yakus who has worked with John Lennon, U2 and Madonna to name but a few. Clearly Blee is well respected in the industry and her thirteen-track collection is a hidden gem. Disguise is masterfully produced and filled with dynamic instrumentation, full bass lines and soulful vocals. Patty has a smooth powerful voice and she sings with passion. Patty writes visual songs about love and life. Patty's influences include Jackson Browne, CSN&Y and Sheryl Crow. Her music is a magical blend of blues, folk, country and rock. Blee's unique sound is a mix of classic rock and country with a contemporary edge. The CD opens with 'Till I Get enough' which merges a solid rock bass line with a down home flavor. Patty's vocals are crisp and clear and the instrumentation is vibrant. 'I Miss The Way' is a poignant song of dying love sung with passion and wonderfully accented with guitars, percussion and emotion. 'Soul Dancing' is another prime example of Patty's diverse soulful vocals and masterful instrumentation, which is the norm on this CD. There is no hiding the fact that Patty Blee and company are a formidable force and hopefully her music will be revealed to a large listening audience!

PAUL BRUBAKER – AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS: and the pursuit of happiness is the debut release from New Jersey singer/songwriter Paul Brubaker. Paul also plays guitar and keys on his solo release. Brubaker is joined by other talented Jersey artists to create an impressive ten track CD. and the pursuit of happiness is a fine contemporary rock collection with plenty of percussion and other great sounds such as the tenor sax, the soprano sax, trumpet, flugelhorn and string instruments. Paul's style has aptly been described as Barenaked Ladies meets Elvis Costello with a dash of Weezer and Fuel. Brubaker's music is energetic, edgy and has a soft alternative flair. Paul writes intelligent well-constructed songs about life's thorny issues. His music has catchy hook lines, impressive guitar chords and polished production. Paul sings with emotion and his vocals are warm with smooth edges. The opening track 'Miserable Princess' captures all of these elements and showcases Paul's thought provoking lyrics. This song is captivating. 'That's What I Want' starts off slow and reflective moving into a funky beat and subtle guitar work that flows into a cool jazz grove. The song ebbs and flows under interesting bridge changes and intriguing instrumentation. It is followed by 'Elaine' another catchy tune with blissful bass lines, solid fretwork and demonstrative vocals. and the pursuit of happiness is a solid collection of power pop tunes by Paul Brubaker a versatile stylish musician!

PAUL COTTON – FIREBIRD: Paul Cotton, Poco's longtime lead guitarist and master of the art of visual stimulation through music, has produced a very fine new CD, Firebird. After 10 years without new music from Paul, this CD is truly a joy for all of his many fans. When you listen to any of Paul Cotton's music, you can't help but be drawn into the imagery his music and lyrics evoke. This CD is no different and may be some of his best work ever. The CD contains 11 tracks two of which - "Ride The Country" and "Bad Weather" - are remakes from his Poco contributions. The CD opens strong with "Woman with a Broken Heart," a song with a theme that Paul has made a staple for himself. It's your love lost, love tried type ballad. Sometimes you need to get deeper with Paul on some these songs, because he may not be speaking of your typical love lost. In some of his songs they talk of the love lost between partners in the band situation. There are two favorite new tracks — "Firebird" and "Across A Painted Sky." Both of these lyrically evoke the sensation of being in the American Southwest. "Painted Sky" was penned by current Poco partner and master of the pedal steel guitar, Rusty Young. In both of these songs Paul lifts you and transports you to those southwestern scenes and allows you to fill in the painting. The two remakes are very well done, considering both of these were honed to perfection in Poco. "Bad Weather," first recorded when Paul was in Illinois Speedpress, and again with Poco on From The Inside (1971) is a classic Paul Cotton song. Here Paul's voice is a little bit older and little deeper and he receives great backing vocal from Rusty. It also shows off the wonderful pedal steel work of Rusty. For a lover of Poco's version of "Bad Weather," it may take a couple of listens to appreciate what Paul has done in this remake, but it no doubt will become a favorite. "Ride The Country" is a favorite from A Good Feelin' To Know (1972), and the remake here is awesome. The entire CD is fine and worth checking out. Give it a listen you won't be disappointed.

PAUL HURST – BRIDGE: Paul Hurst is a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Bridge was his first solo CD that has been recently re-released. Paul states that the eleven tracks on Bridge "harkin back to a more innocent time that brings back lots of memories", yet the songs are still compelling and relevant. Hurst's music reflects his interest in 60s and 70s classic rock combined with the blues, contemporary, folk and pop. His production is straightforward with few tricks allowing his spirited instrumentation and solid vocals to carry his songs. 'Tomorrow' opens the CD with simple drum rhythm and subtle bass line as Paul explores a variety of vocal inflections and guitar rifts. 'More of the Same' and 'Firehouse' are up-tempo, smoky blues based songs featuring spicy guitar parts. The vocals on both are crisp yet have the heart and soul of the blues. Bridge is a solid collection covering a variety of styles that are well played by the multitalented Paul Hurst!

PAUL HURST – TIME TRAVELER: Time Traveler is the sophomore release from singer, songwriter, self-producer and multi-instrumentalist Paul Hurst. His music is a blend of pop, classic rock and Americana. The diverse scope of sounds found on this eleven-track collection range from a mid sixty's vibe to contemporary. Production is crisp and clean and Paul is competent on guitars, bass and percussion. Hurst alone is able to create songs that are rich and full sounding. His music includes up-tempo beats, dueling harmonies and plenty of guitar hooks. His well-constructed lyrics are about relationships and self-reflection. Paul states that "it took me so long to make Time Traveler that by the time we got near the end I had gone through so many changes it was like I morphed into a different person." The CD reflects maturity, growth and craftsmanship. 'Working Title' is the spirited opening track with souring guitar work and fine vocal blends. 'Linda Ann' echoes of the Beach Boys in construction and layered vocals. A cool wavy bass line melds with acoustic guitars and a catchy hook line. 'Your Loving Heart' features both six and twelve string electric guitars with a sixties flair, poetic lyrics and soft solid percussion. Time Traveler is poetry in motion!

PAUL MCCARTNEY – MEMORY ALMOST FULL: Who knew that at the age of 64 - Sir Paul would release perhaps the most involving, most thoroughly enjoyable and most rocking of his four decade solo career. But that is exactly what he's done. Even the biggest McCartney fan (and I consider myself one of them) would have to admit that as a solo artist McCartney has never made three excellent solo records in a row. There's always a clunker in there somewhere to break up the proverbial hat trick. But "Memory Almost Full", co-produced by David Kahne, coupled with 2005's "Chaos and Creation in the Backyard" and 2001 "Driving Rain" (minus the trite 9/11 anthem "Freedom") adds up to about as an impressive a run as any artist making music today - let alone one that carries the enormous expectations as McCartney. "Memory Almost Full" is a success on ever level. As a songwriter, McCartney finds away to reflect on his own wildly successful past, while still finding truisms that even us non-Beatles can relate to, such as deeply moving "The End of the End," the clever "Vintage Clothes" and infectious "Ever Present Past." And as a singer and musician McCartney continues to astound. "See Your Sunshine" features some of the most impressive 'lead' bass playing since "Rain," while the Brian Wilson-esque harmonies leave you awestruck at just how much he can do with his voice. Same for "Gratitude," perhaps his most bluesy vocal performance since Abbey Road's "Oh Darling." Book-ending this masterstroke is lead track "Dance Tonight" and the finale "Nod Your Head." Both very different songs - the former a sing-along that would seem appropriate around a campfire; the later as simple a rock tune McCartney has ever written - the overarching message is: reflect on your past, appreciate it, learn from it, but don't forget to have a good time.

PERNELL DISNEY – SEVERN WAY: Severn Way is the debut release from singer/songwriter Pernell Disney. In addition to vocals, Disney plays guitar. Pernell grew up in the Washington DC area with dreams of becoming a professional hockey player but fate had another plan for him. Disney writes introspective well-constructed songs about relationships, disappointments and hope. His philosophy that is conveyed through his music is the idea of turning lemons into lemonade. Pernell's music is a blend of acoustic rock, loop samples a dash of pop and echoes. His arrangements are straightforward using subtle beats, textured keyboards and dreamy sometimes, spacey guitars. The focus of his music is story telling through honest insightful lyrics. Disney's style has been compared to the "Nick Drake-Duncan Sheik mold". This ten-track collection is crisp and clean ranging from melancholy to optimistic. 'Midnight Detroit' is filled with visual imagery, expressive soft vocals and intriguing instrumentation. 'Time For Tea' has fine guitar work varied tempos and quite but powerful vocals conveying the idea of returning home. Overall, Severn Way is a clever creative work by newcomer Pernell Disney.

PETE MULLER – MORE THAN THIS: Pete Muller is a singer, songwriter and pianist from New York City. He has a business degree and had a successful career in finance before turning to his true passion. Music is now his full time occupation. Pete is joined by a multitude of talented players who provide guitars, percussion, strings, keys and horns to Muller's twelve song plus bonus track collection. Pete writes mature, insightful lyrics that are sung from the heart. Muller draws from a range of genres including jazz, improvisational, pop and rock. More Than This is his second release, utilizing a variety of tempos and styles with a strong focus on the piano. 'Still Looking for My Home' is the opening track. It has a subtle drum beat with a touch of strings, combined with rich, reflective piano and vocal expressions especially at the title/hook line. It is followed by 'I Don't Know What to Do', an up-tempo number featuring harmonizing vocals, colorful imagery and light but lush instrumentation. 'Underneath the Ground' is dark storytelling with salient strings and deep textures and tones. Peter Muller blends passion and diversity into his music and More Than This captures that sprit and more!

PETE'S LIFE AS A DOG! – TODAY IS LIKE ANY OTHER DAY: Today is like any other day is the latest release from Pete Poumbourios and his mates. Pete is the singer/songwriter and guitarist for the band but he also tours as a solo artist. He is joined by Russell on drums and Phil on bass, who are accomplished musicians. Pete's life as a dog! is based out of Victoria, Australia, where Pete has played lots of shows, made many recordings and continues to promote his music. Pete is influenced by 60's vocals groups, guitar great Jimmy Page, composer Brian Wilson and Lou Reed. Poumbourios' music is a blend of guitar-based pop, catchy hooks and a touch of the blues. Pete writes witty lyrics and straightforward arrangements. Poumbourios sings with enthusiasm and soul. Today is like any other day has solid instrumentation and a whimsical almost carnival feel complete with a faint dark side. Pete sings about relationships and the environment in smooth tones and subtle echoing effects. The title track 'Today is like any other day' begins calm and gentle like a new day and moves into a slightly psychedelic vibe progressing towards the captivating hook line and closing with a steady beat and nice guitar work. '5 seconds to go' has an ominous opening and flows to the bridge where Pete the prophet warns that people's mistreatment of the earth is speeding mankind to the end of history. Pete's vocals contrast from sweet to shadowy and merge well with the dark instrumentation. Today is like any other day is a fun nine-track collection of well-produced, well-played songs from talents from the land down under.

PETER FRAMPTON – NOW: Peter was a founding member of the band Humble Pie. In 1971, he left the group in pursuit of a solo career and had the opportunity to work with David Bowie, Harry Nilsson and George Harrison on All Things Must Pass. Frampton became a mega-star in the mid 70's with the release of Frampton Comes Alive, which stayed at the top of the Billboard charts for a recorded breaking five months. Since then his career has had its up and downs but he remains an innovative guitar master. Peter still creates imaginative guitar accessories through his company Framptone, whose hand made tools are used by contemporary artists David Grohl and Richie Sambora to name but a few. Now is Peter's latest release featuring eleven beautifully crafted songs that range from reflective ballads to guitar heavy rockers. Frampton is joined by longtime band mates Bob Mayo on keyboards, John Regan on bass and Chad Cromwell a relatively newcomer on drums. Thus the musicianship on every track is tight and filled with power and energy. 'Verge Of A Thing' is the commanding opening track. The heavy beat and strong guitar leads are mesmerizing and there is more fine fret work to come. This song just grabs your attention and flawlessly flows into, 'Flying Without Wings' which combines a cool bluesy tone with upbeat optimist. It is a juxtaposition of styles with a solid beat, fine key work and of course soaring guitars. 'Hour of Need' is a slower song with some interesting bridge changes and a deep moody beat. This song also subtly features voice effects, part of Frampton's signature sound. Peter's version of 'While My Guitar Gently Weep' is just brilliant. Now is a contemporary CD that blends a variety of styles and sounds ranging from Middle Eastern tones on 'I Need Ground' to classic guitar driven rock to beautiful ballads such as 'Mia Rose'. Peter Frampton is back better than ever!

PETER GRAND – PETER GRAND: Peter Grand is the grandmaster of his self-titled debut CD. All songs are written, arranged, produced and preformed by this multi-talented artist. Peter plays piano, keys, bass, guitar and drums on this well orchestrated album. His songs are well written and grandly produced. He describes his music as contemporary piano pop rock. Born in Germany and now living in LA, Peter has a passion for music which clearly comes across in his music. His compositions are straight-forward but poetic. The piano pieces throughout the CD are beautiful and are the highlights of this collection. Peter Grand has a good positive feel to it that creates a relaxing mood. I particularly liked 'Wild As The Wind' which had great instrumentation and a light breezy feel. 'April Rain', the closing track, has a soothing flow and is a great showcase for Grand to demonstrate his piano skills. Peter is also quite proficient on the other instruments that he plays. Overall, this is a grand CD for fans of light rock music. Enjoy!

PETER SANDO – CREATURES OF HABIT: Singer/songwriter, Peter Sando has been playing since the psychedelic era. His latest project, Creatures of Habit, blends his 60's roots with modern folk-rock in this 14-track collection. Peter's songs are stories that unfold in well-crafted lyrics. He speaks of counting your blessings, positive relationships and romance. Talented musicians back Peter's clean and concise vocals. Sando plays solid guitar leads on this mostly acoustic CD. 'John Brown' has precise percussion, soft guitars, a fiddle and reflective vocals telling the story of the fight for freedom. 'Dessert Flower' is another social commentary (possibly about Native Americans) with a melancholy tone and fine acoustic guitar work. 'Helpless' combines the sax, piano, the organ and female vocals with a good groove through out. Warning: This CD could be habit forming!

PHAME – CHAPTER:FOUR VERSE 15: Phame started rapping in the late 80's but honor, respect and values are important ingredients to his songs rather than the gangster mentality of some rap. Phame melds an assortment of styles that range from classic rock, funk, hip-hop and new wave into his versatile compositions. His songs are universal but influenced by his home base in the San Francisco Bay area. Phame sings in both English and Spanish thus blending his Latino background into his music. Variety is the spice of life and Phame provides plenty of that on this flavorful sixteen-track collection. Phame serves up generous portions of additive beats combined with smoky, expressive vocals with a variety of rhythms. He also worked with different producers and collaborators on this CD. The 'Intro' flowing into 'Remember My Name' are the strong, opening tracks that sets the bar high with beguiling tempos and smooth rapping. 'Make Way' utilizes catchy loops and sound effects layered over dueling vocals. 'I Love Hip Hop' is a fitting tribute to the genre with its funky beat, scratching with sound effects and cool rap. Phame cooks up hip-hop with heart and Chapter: Four Verse 15 is positive and inspiring!

PHIL KEAGGY – IT'S PERSONAL: Phil Keaggy is a versatile vocalist, guitarist and composer. He has worked with many musicians throughout the years. It's Personal is his latest collaboration. Keith Moore is the author of ten musical poems that are sung and played by Phil. The CD was produced by both Moore and Keaggy. Keith writes spiritual, visual lyrics and the instrumentation is stark and straightforward. The CD opens with 'Simple', which is filled with images of nature accompanied by a subtle cello. 'Motorbike' is the story of love and growth flowing over delicate guitar chords. 'Whisper' is sung and played softly but the story of weathering storms and learning to be still is loud and clear. 'Smoke' blends the old and modern context of offerings and prayer with smoldering, acoustic guitar leads. 'Job' is a reflective ballad about the man of faith. 'These Hills' features Keith on the background vocals as Phil sings about nature and memories. 'The Blood' showcases Keaggy's ability to sing from high to low ranges in the rich context of the saving grace of Jesus. 'Your Light' has playful, delicate, guitar chords as Phil reflectively sings about God shaping life. 'Lost in You' is sung with rich, expressive vocals stating that we always have a friend in Jesus. 'Irish Blessings' brings Keith back on the BGV for a beautiful ballad about the wonders of Ireland and a prayer for peace between north and south. It's Personal is an intimate look at faith conveyed through lyrical guitar and bass lines and poetic words.

PHIL KEAGGY – SPECIAL OCCASIONS & FREEHAND: Phil Keaggy is a guitar genius who has been a vital part of the music scene for over thirty years. Keaggy has released more than thirty albums and has been a guest performer on many more. Phil recently appeared on hard rocking POD's latest release. Keaggy joined his first band at age 13 but gained major recognition for his brilliance in the power-trio Glass Harp. By 1972, he embarked on a solo career focusing on Christian music and occasionally working in other groups. Today he tours and continues to create and produces viable music that is very varied from rock to well orchestrated instrumentals.Special Occasions is a twenty-two track collection of lighthearted covers and originals. It celebrates happy days, family, friends and life. The instrumentation is first rate and the CD ranges from reflective to cheerful and whimsical. 'Happy Anniversary, Love' and 'I'll Be Loving You' are beautiful songs inspired by Bernadette, Phil's wife. They capture the essence and wonders of marriage. I was thrilled to hear an updated version of 'Here and Now' which was a song written for a friend's marriage. Rich and I choose that piece for our first dance at our wedding. Freehand is the second volume of the acoustic sketches series. This twenty-three-song collection is a masterpiece. Phil used six different guitars to create the diverse textures and tones archived on this instrumental CD. The music is vibrant and colorful as Keaggy uses sounds from Spain, Italy, Ireland, Africa, Japan and America. The music is evolutionary, some compositions are complex and intricate and others are described as interludes that will see further development. Every song is magical on this CD yet I liked the soundscapes on 'Cajon Pass', 'Hatch of the Mayflies' and 'The Dance'. I have been a big fan of Phil's since I first saw him live in the early 90's. Keaggy's latest releases are two more reasons to enjoy and respect his music and expertise! Thank you Phil!

PHILIP FOXMAN & PRIME 8 – WEST 4TH & CHARLES: West 4th & Charles is the latest release from singer-songwriter Philip Foxman and his band Prime 8. The Australian-born Foxman wrote the 11 tracks on this CD named after an address in Greenwich Village. This New York City-based band uses an array of instruments such as the violin, the mandolin and keyboards in conjunction with traditional rock and roll instruments to produce compelling songs. All the tracks are well-crafted stories that have powerful imagery. There are dark undertones to many of the songs, which ironically are upbeat in tone, a prime example being 'Random Fire.' This music is emotionally charged and captures the urban tone of the band's origins in a unique style that merges various forms including folk rock. The opening song 'Here It Comes' melds various sounds with a catchy hook. 'My Valentine' is a heartbreaking, well-orchestrated song about his dying valentine, which brought tears to my eyes. 'Spanish Armada' has good instrumentation that sends the listener sailing. West 4th & Charles is an interesting mix of songs about NYC, relationships and life in general and a good addition to any CD collection.

PHOENIX BLOCK – CHEMTRAILS: New Jersey based four-piece takes a look in the sky and finds Chemtrails - their debut full length record that aims high in its goal to reign down on the masses. Phoenix Block covers a wide swath of musical territory and they criss-cross their melodic strains with established acts like U2, Bon Jovi and The Cars. What differs them from these monsters of the industry are their songs. A tale told of a malevolent descent from above ties the 13 tracks of this auspicious concept album together - the question is - are you ready to believe in Chemtrails? If so, you'll enjoy the moody and buoyant melodies that underlie standout tracks like "Can't Divide Us", "Future Calling" and "Last Chance". On the title number the singer says "They're Rushing Over My Head" - this first release by Phoenix Block might be over the heads of the many - but if they would only look up they would see the Chemtrails. Now they can hear them, too.

Phyllis is trained in both classical Western and Eastern music and she has work in rock, reggae and jazz groups. Phyllis' husband and collaborator is Dean Foster who plays bass, drum programming and guitar. The talented two are joined by other seasoned players on this diverse, nine-track collection. Addison's music melds classic rock sounds with unusual world instrumentation including the Sarid, the Udu and more. Phyllis' compositions are inspired by the teaching of Adi Da Samraj, therefore, her music is filled with light, joy and wisdom. The CD is an eclectic, spiritual record that draws on an assortment of genres and nations. 'Baptism' features electronic tones washing over lively rhythms as Phyllis sing with passion about spiritual renewal. 'Om Sri Da' is a mantra layered over an up-tempo, enchanting, electronic groove and mesmerizing world instrumentation. It is an inventive contrast of modern music blending with ancient traditions. PINEROSS – PINEROSS: Pineross is the innovation of Kevin Larkin a singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist. Kevin plays the majority of the instruments on his CD although a number of talented musicians appear on Pineross. The eleven-track album reflects a by-gone area with textures and tones drawing from country music from the 40's and 50's along with Irish melodies and some traditional blue grass. The CD is reminiscent of the past yet has clean, modern production. Each instrument is distinct yet part of the bigger picture. Larkin's melodic mountain music paints visual images of the fading west in arrangements that are arresting. "Brown Paper Day" is a slow yet solid tune with various sounds accenting the points of the song. "Dust In The Eyes" overlays guitars with subtle whistling as Kevin sing the story. Kevin Larkin is the real deal, raising the flag for old country with music that is honest and poignant!

POCO – BAREBACK AT BIG SKY: Poco has been in the business of crafting magical music for over three decades. Many consider Poco the pioneers of country rock and they are responsible for spawning a number of careers. The current line up includes founder Rusty Young who plays various guitars, lap, mandolin and Dobro. Paul Cotton who has been in the band since the 70's aptly handles lead guitar. Jack Sundrud on bass and George Lawrence on drums/percussion are the all important rhythm section. Poco is well known for captivating harmonies and creative instrumentation. Bareback At Big Sky is a return to their roots and features fifteen acoustic tracks. The CD is a good mix of classics, newer material and rare gems. Many of the song interpretations are fresh with changes in keys, lead instruments and the acoustic background. The story goes that the band stayed a week at an inn in scenic Montana preparing and practicing the set lists before performing and recording the intimate live shows. The music is relaxed yet polished. The set starts off strong with the reworking of 'Under The Gun' with a focus on the mandolin and a shift in key. 'If Your Heart Needs A Hand' a more recent release, features robust guitar work by Paul and striking harmonies. It is followed by the spicy 'Cajun Moon' with David Goodwin playing a soulful harp, adding zest to an already hot song. 'Shake It' with Jack singing lead, blends a snappy tempo with catchy instrumentation. Bareback at Big Sky is an excellent live acoustic album proving that Poco is still running strong!

The band, which birthed from the Buffalo Springfield were pioneers in the late 60's and 70's. Poco and others crossed the frontier to merge rock and country. Prior to that the two genres were considered separate territories. Poco has released eighteen albums, been through a number of personal changes and has played hundreds of live show. Yet, their latest CD is spirited and fresh. Poco fans of old will appreciate the combination of their classic signature sound melding with modern tones and crisp clean production. Paul Cotton and Rusty Young, two of the long-time members are also the guitar giants of the group. Paul plays powerful leads throughout and Rusty Young is superb on slide. Melodic song structures, striking harmonies and well-written songs makes this a blue ribbon collection. The opening song 'One Tear at a Time' might be familiar to fans that have heard the song live. Soft but strong guitar chords combined with a subtle slightly somber beat enhances the fine pensive storytelling of this track. It is followed by 'Every Time I Hear that Train'. A song about travel that rumbles along on an up-tempo beat, an energetic hook line and robust guitars. 'I Can Only Imagine' features fabulous harmonies, more fine guitar work and a poignant beat. Running Horse is a rich eleven-track collection that harnesses rock with a modern Nashville sound. Enjoy!

POKER FACE – MADE IN AMERICA/SEX LIES & POLITIKS: Poker Face is a quartet based out of Allentown, Pennsylvania. Paul Topete plays both acoustic and electric guitars as well as keys. Brett Griffiths takes lead guitar to a whole new level playing an array of styles ranging from jazz to rock. Dennis Beidler on bass and Richie Valentin on drums provide powerful rhythms. All are strong players and singers allowing opportunities for four part harmonies that enhance their dynamic music. The members of Poker Face are patriots blending alternative, classic and modern rock music into hard-hitting, thought provoking songs. Poker Face's instrumentation is often heavy and so is their subject matter. Poker Face pens songs about faith and politics. Besides potent, diverse songs, both CDs have interactive elements that can be viewed on a computer. The liner notes also include additional information and lyrics. Made In America and Sex, Lies & Politiks are commanding records with solid rock anthems and poignant melodies. Both CDs were impressive. Standout tracks on Made In America include 'Kontrol' both in English and Spanish, 'I Wanna Know' and the electric and acoustic versions of 'Prayer For America'. POKER FACE: PEACE OR WAR (SONGS FOR THE REVOLUTION): The Revolution Continues with Poker Face! Poker Face is a band based out of Allentown, Pennsylvania and their hard rock brand of music is packed with political and spiritual overtones. The quizzical quartet calls for a return to Constitutional values and the paper it was printed on. Peace or War: Songs For The Revolution is the band's fifth record and first in six years. A half decade and an administration change wasn't enough to temper their provocative approach to music. The band's continued grievances with the government, pro-pot stance and spiritual battles are well-documented on this thirteen track CD that is potent with its powerful four-part harmonies bolstered by riveting rhythms, rousing riffs and weighty words. More than half the tracks are true hard rockers especially the first two. "Survive" is a feisty fighting song and "Fincen" pulses with power. Poker Face stands for the political overthrow of America's bought-and-paid-for two-party system via legal means at the voting booth. They also call for legalization of hemp to recreate America's faltering farm and manufacturing base. That part of their platform is well represented on tracks five through seven which offers an uplifting and elevating three-pack for higher consciousness. "Grassoline" envisions a world where the hemp fields are endless and cars run on power from the plant, not the power plant or oil well. "Heidi Hi" and "Wanna Get High" set the tone for their musical campaign for cannabis awareness. The album takes a thematic turn at "Area 51" which uncovers a theory about UFO and aliens that's out of this world. Musically, the album's stylistic variety runs from grunge to reggae to the more melodic and reflective refrains of "Please Help Me God" which recognizes the need for the strength of a higher power to take on the powers that be. Poker Face is sticking to their core values and vigor with Peace or War: Songs For The Revolution - a cohesive collection of songs that address serious issues in serious hard rock fashion.

PURGE D.I. – GROUNDED: I GROUNDED is the latest release from Purge d.i. a hard rocking quartet based out of New England. The band is currently touring in support of this twelve track plus one bonus song CD. They have opened for major mainstream artists such as Fuel and Linkin Park. Purge d.i.'s sound is dramatic and powerful. It is a blend of stripped down metal and alternative that digs deep. Pensive lyrics, pulsing rhythms and hard driving guitar chords set the tense tone of this CD. Jay Bellaud the lead vocalist, sings with feeling and force. Jay is also known as a charismatic live performer and the rest of the band intensifies that energy. Their music creates visual images that are dark, profound and poetic. This band could be influenced by Creed but their sound is still original. 'Decline' the opening track starts off with strong guitar chords, intense vocals and a heavy beat. The song is dynamic with is musical twists and turns. It is followed by 'Weight' another heavily rhythmic song with potent percussion, emotional vocals and strong instrumentation. Although I favored the first two tracks on this collection there is plenty of good material to be found on this CD. I GROUNDED is high voltage durable rock by musicians who create with passion. RAY CHARLES – GENIUS & FRIENDS: Ray Charles has been an influential and innovative musician since the 1940's. Ray's was the first to meld gospel with R&B, producing numerous hit records and singles. Mr. Charles was always a soulful performer during both the highs and lows of his career. Genius & Friends demonstrates that Ray, even posthumously is still a vital force. In 1997 and 1998, Mr. Charles recorded duets with contemporary artists ranging from the edgy Mary J. Blige to country crooner Willie Nelson. In late 2003, James Austin at Rhino received a call from Ray stating that he wanted the duets released. It took some time to locate the masters. Sadly, Ray who passed away in June of 2004 was unable to finalize the project but Phil Ramon the producer has done an impressive job. All fourteen songs are magical. Charles is in great voice as he explores a diversity of genres. Yet, the arrangements have Ray's signature style with lots of jazz, R&B and soulful overtones. The CD features power packed vocal performances from relatively newcomer Alicia Keys belting out 'America The Beautiful' to the legendary Diana Ross singing 'Big Bad Love'. The duets with male singers Chris Isaak and George Michael are also impressive and inventive. My particular favorites were 'All I Want To Do' featuring the soulful Angie Stone, 'Imagine' with Ruben Studdard and The Harlem Gospel Singers and 'I Will Be There' with the commanding Idina Menzel. The title Genius & Friends says it all!

RAY CHARLES – RAY ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK: Ray Charles was born in 1930 and died in 2004. Ray was blind since age seven but he rose above the adverse circumstances of darkness, poverty and segregation to become a master of soul and a music legend. Mr. Charles has won countless awards including thirteen Grammys. Ray has had Top 10 hits in country, jazz, pop, R&B and rock. In the 1960's, he was active in the fight for racial justice – finically assisting Martin Luther King. Ray was known and respected as a perfectionist who demanded total commitment from the bands he led. Charles was considered a musical pioneer, blending gospel-powered vocals with the blues, jazz and other genres. Ray himself was a passionate singer and keyboard player. The soundtrack from Ray is a great introduction to Charles' early work. The seventeen tracks chosen for the CD were remastered from the originals, truly capturing the man and his musical spirit. The CD is a mix of studio and live performances and the production is crisp and clean. Ray is stellar from start to finish and an education in music history! Many of the songs are familiar, as they have been covered by various artists and other tracks have clearly inspired musicians from the 60's and beyond. Ray Charles is a legend and this soundtrack demonstrates why!

RAY PASCOE JR. – CAN YOU HEAR ME: Ray Pascoe Jr. started playing the trumpet in the fourth grade. Later, he learned the piano, baritone, cello and guitar. Today, Ray is a multi-instrumentalist who also sings and writes. Ray's music is a unique blend of genres. Pascoe uses different elements from various instruments to craft a sound that is difficult to classify. The guitar is played in traditional folk fashion, whereas the synthesizer brings in a new age element. 'Can You Hear Me' is a one-song sample in advance of a forthcoming full length CD. The track features soft pianos, light instrumentation combined with reflective lyrics and vocals. Ray, who owns and operates his own software development company, is passionate about composing and crafting songs. Pascoe hopes to find a performer and/or publisher to bring his music to a wider audience but in the meantime he will continue to creatively express himself through his songs.

RAY WINCH – LIVE AT THE SACRED BEAN!: Live At The Sacred Bean! is a 21-track collection of Ray's originals and a number of covers. His music is a combination of rock, new country, folk and 70's pop. Ray's lyrics are well-crafted and generate beautiful visual images and reflections. Winch's songs are upbeat, positive and hopeful even when dealing with sad subjects. As a singer/songwriter, Ray's music is introspective but he sincerely sings about topics that many of us can relate too such as the soul, relationships and love. Ray states that he has loved music from an early age and has been heavily influenced by Joni Mitchell. He pays tribute to her on this CD by performing 'Big Yellow Taxi.' Solid musicians back Winch on this live effort and his songs from the studio album Vision and Reflections transfer well to the stage. There are many prime examples of Ray's beautiful lyrics and delightful delivery throughout the acoustic and full-band tracks on this disc. 'Sun is Shining' is a great visual song about the coming of spring and new love. 'Another Day' is also a seasonal song with strong imagery backed by solid instrumentation. 'Summertime' is the sad ballad of losing love with a lively hook line. 'I Won't Be Back This Time' has a catchy soft guitar rift to accompany solid lyrics and musicianship. Overall, this is a crisp, clean live CD and a visit to the Sacred Bean is highly recommended to fans of modern folk rock!

RAZETOASHES – RAZETOASHES: RazeToAshes is a quartet based out of Boston, Massachusetts looking to expand their music reach beyond the northeast. RazeToAshes is a hard rocking band with a sharp, metal edge. They site a wide range of influences including jazz, pop and hard rock, yet their sound is uniquely their own. The liner notes of RazeToAshes' four-track EP explains that the CD tells the story of "Japan's black, despotic Age of Abe". The songs all have a bleak undercurrent along with caustic lyrics, cutting rhythms and sizzling guitars. Campbell Hoffman the lead singer has a deep voice adding to the drama of the music. "The Seven Seals", the opening track, sets the forceful tone for the rest of the EP. I particularly liked the sharp leads and hard driving beat of the song along with some power packed guitar parts. The other three songs build on the energy of the first ending with the ominous "EndGame".

REBEL MEETS REBEL – REBEL MEETS REBEL: Organic combustion. When the unlikely swerve then merge, it's more often a train wreck than a flash of genius - and if you're tempted to write off the marriage of post-Pantera Damageplan with biker-country outlaw as pole-dancing on decibels, you'd be packing conventional - if errant - wisdom. The "Cowboys from Hell," Pantera's guitarist Dimebag Darrell, drummer Vinnie Paul and bassist Rex Brown's, teamed up with iconic redneck iconoclast David Allan Coe - best known to Pantera audiences for the "Jack Daniels If You Please" warm-up music - for a seamless sonic thrust that packs a blindsided-rusty-nail-two-by-four kind of wallop. Captured in stray moments over the course of four years, the Rebel Meets Rebel project tears into musical pockets with the power-teeth of a chain saw - shredding, pumping, thumping, wheeling and at times even finding a way to whiplash melodic cyclones to the Paul's always propulsive backbeats. Plowing the traditional road warrior themes - good times, hot babes, cold beer, long nights - Rebel Meets Rebel is a tour de force of sheer carnage, designed to be about elevating the notion of "there's two kinds of music: good and bad" to an even higher truism "that which rocks and that which sucks." In a world of safe, safer, safest, this is all about loud, louder, loudest, corners on two wheels and having the time of your life.

REGAN LANE – DON'T MESS WITH THE PRETTY: Regan Lane is a composer, producer, singer and multi-instrumentalist. Regan is an award winning artist whose music has been featured on a number of TV programs. Lane sites a wide range of influences from classic rockers John Lennon to contemporary bands such as Collective Soul. His sound is an eclectic blend of alternative pop, British and rock. Regan handles the majority of the instruments on his ten-track solo debut, but the CD does feature other talented players too. Lane's songs are catchy with a range of moods and tempos. His lyrics are a look at the "wonder and absurdity of the world we live in today." Lane has a crisp, expressive voice that works well in the various genres that he incorporates into his music. The CD is strong from the energetic opening track to the electronically influenced closer. 'Time Flies' and 'I Like The Picture' were my particular favorites with their creative textures and tones. RELIC RUST – RELIC CUTS: Relic Rust is five core composers, players and producers. Relic Rust's music is a blend of classic pop and contemporary rock. The main theme of their debut CD is boy meets and/or loses girl told in eight different stories. The songs range from ballads to rockers that are catchy and creative. Singers Mike McCormick and Lee Kroupis have velvety vocals and sing with passion. The rest of the band adds skills and zeal to poetic, well written songs. 'Bad Timing', the opening track, melds subtle rhythms with searing guitar leads and soaring vocals. It is followed by the lively 'I've Been Told' that mixes old and modern pop/rock styles into one animated arrangement. 'Walk In The Rain' is sad and serious enhanced by soft, acoustic guitars and stringed instruments. Relic Rust combines classic and modern sounds into songs that are inventive and original and Relic Cuts is a strong, freshman release!

RENEE ASTERIA – RENEE ASTERIA: Renee Asteria is a guitarist, producer, singer and songwriter. Renee founded her own label to back "projects that integrate the arts with education, economic empowerment and raising social and environmental awareness." In addition to her solo music, Renee is a member of We'A'Dem a roots reggae band with psychedelic and world over tones. Asteria is also working on her masters in public health. This multi-talented artist writes insightful songs about the different people and places that she has experienced. Asteria's music blends a multiple of genres and the nine songs on her self-titled debut explore a range of moods and stylings. Asteria effectively fuses reflective folk-rock with reggae and Latin rhythms that are catchy and unique. Renee has a voice that is both strong and sweet. 'Curly Black Hair' starts with a serious tone and lightens instrumentally although the crux of the song is "each day is a test." It is unclear if Renee is singing the song for herself or for a socially oppressed person. 'Sweet Ben' is a love song but a sad one as "Ben is just a memory." The tempo is upbeat with snappy guitar leads as Renee's vocals soar. Renee Asteria is music that is both magical and meaningful!• Recommended Tracks: (1,3) [USA/CA 2005 - web] (2005 Review by Laura Turner Lynch for Kweevak.com)

RENNICK – TO THE SKIES: To The Skies was written, performed and produced by solo artist Rennick. Rennick plays eight different instruments on his debut CD, although none is dominant. He has a pensive vocal style that on occasion is reminiscent of Morrissey, which is layered over modern electronic arrangements. RICHARD D SHANK – A SINGLE STEP: A Single Step is the solo, debut release from Richard D Shank. Richard describes his music as piano rock, yet his songs and stories explore diverse musical terrains in lush, lyrical landscapes. The twelve track CD journals Richard's life of bad choices, broken dreams, forgiveness, hope and love ("You" and "Is This Real"). Shank started playing piano in his early teens learning and later melding various influences and styles into his music. His songs are intense and intimate with interesting instrumentation. The CD production is clean allowing each sound to stand out including some soaring guitar solos. I enjoyed the album as a whole but particularly liked "Standing" which had a rock anthem quality along with amazing piano work and "Help Me Now" an edgy, emotional piece. A Single Step should move Richard D Shank forward on the road to success.

Richard has a diverse background of life and working experiences, which weave their way into his songs. Richard likes classic rockers such as Bruce Springsteen as well as Cajun and folk music. His ten-track debut is a gentle combination of country and folk. Richards executes his insightful lyrics with a deep, countrified vocal style. This self-produced CD was a labor of love over a two-year period, as each song was recorded as the inspiration and mood struck. Richard has a group of talented friends to assist with additional guitars, bass, drums, keyboards, slide, mandolin and fiddle. The Banjo Lady opens with 'Margaritas Can't Be Bad'. It flows on a subdued country groove and shrewd storytelling before it closes with a loose sing-along of the hook line. Richard also plays acoustic guitar on this self produced CD. Richard has been influenced by many artists including Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan. This sixteen-track collection is divided into four sections addressing issues in a thematic order. Richard writes honest lyrics that are placed in stark musical arrangements. Many of the songs are simply McGraw singing softly while playing the acoustic guitar. Others have subtle instrumentation to create a restrained beat and subtle tones. ROBERT WINDPONY – MOONRIDER: Robert Windpony sent us his latest wind flute project called Moonrider and he blew us away. Windpony is actually an Arizona-based professional golfer who became interested in flutes after encountering a random musician in a hospital room who was playing for the patients there. Windpony is not only a great player who performs his spirit songs in traditional Native American style - he is an entrepreneur with an attractive and enticing web site dedicated to the Native American wind instruments. I had trouble keeping my credit card stashed away because I immediately became interested in collecting the beautiful and musical works of art. When Robert records or performs in concert, he plays each song differently each time. Robert feels that his playing is guided by spirit and that his flute playing gives voice to his spirit songs. Robert divides his time between the deserts, high plateaus and mountains of the southwest and his journeys are the foundation for the gentle tones that abundant in his soothing music.

Today, Kinny is focusing on solo projects, which include songwriting and producing. Rod has a glowing, tenor voice that is light and airy like a warm, spring day. His music is acoustic based with classic rock under tones and romantic imagery. Kinny pens lyrics about modern life infused with optimism. Rod's six-track EP is melodic and merry. I enjoyed each song, especially the cheery "One Step Closer" with its subtle, serious commentary. "Mood Glow-full version" starts at a slow pace but builds momentum to the tender hook line. ROKY ERICKSON – I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN HERE BEFORE: Roky Erickson may not be a household name but Roky has influenced countless musicians and genres. I Have Always Been Here Before is an anthology of more than three decades of Erickson's masterful music. Roky has an extensive catalogue and has led and worked in a variety of bands. Many consider Erickson and his group The Thirteenth Floor Elevators the founders of psychedelic music. They had a hit in 1966 with 'You're Gonna Miss Me'(song 2 on disk 1). They toured their hometown of Austin, Texas and later clubs in San Francisco where young musicians such as Jerry Garcia and others heard and incorporated the psychedelic sound into their own compositions. In 1969, Roky was busted for pot and in an effort to avoid jail pleaded insanity. He spent years in Rusk State Hospital where he collaborated with other patients. During that time Roky wrote over 100 songs and released a book of poetry entitled 'Openers'. After his release, he worked on an assortment of projects and moved into a more hard driving style. Roky penned songs filled with horror contrasted by stirring love songs. Erickson's commanding, moody guitar work and vehement vocal style combined with dark imagery would inspired the punk movement. Roky continued to write chilling songs throughout the 70's and 80's growing his cult following. This 45-song anthology truly captures the diversity, force and talent of Erickson. The two-disk CD set is comprehensive, a lesson in music history from early retro tunings to Roky's edgy lyrical songs of later years. Even if you are unfamiliar with Erickson's work this CD will sound like an old friend as his influences are apparent in so many older and more contemporary records. Shout Factory has done a stellar job in compiling a diverse collection of haunting, innovative music from the multifaceted Roky Erickson!

RON ARMSTRONG – JUST AROUND THE BEND: Ron Armstrong is true vintage material. His band in the sixties, The Misfits, opened for The Rolling Stones in San Diego on their first U.S. tour and the keyboard player would later turn down a chance to join the act that would become Moby Grape. A lot of water and life has gone under the bridge but Armstrong never gave up the music bug releasing his solo debut Just Around The Bend in 2005. The 10-track CD is a rocking mix of covers and originals and the team knocks it out with "Oh Suzie" sounding like Orbsion era Wilburys. Armstrong honors the Glimmer Twins with a bluesy and authentic version of "Little Red Rooster". Ron's rendition of Chuck Berry's "You Can't Catch Me" rolls along nicely and reveals Armstrong as one worthy of keeping up with. Hopefully the next bend in the road will come up a little faster with a new Armstrong release just around the corner!

RORY GALLAGHER - CREST OF A WAVE: Riding the Wave with Rory Gallagher. When guitar greats such as The Edge (U2) and Brian May (Queen) are asked who their major influences were, the name Rory Gallagher often comes up. Rory who died to soon in 1995, was a potent player both in the studio and on stage. Gallagher was generally associated with the blues, yet he explored and experimented with many styles including hard and melodic rock. Crest of a Wave (Eagle Rock Entertainment) released in the summer of 2009 is a two-disk set that spans the artist's creative career. The twenty-two songs are prime examples of the passion and power that Gallagher gave to his music. These selections are diverse and demonstrate that Rory was more than just a great blues man, which he was. His music had elements of jazz, progressive and dare we say pop. In addition to stellar strat work Rory's lyrics reveal that he was also a fine storyteller. SAINT X – HUMAN SHIELD: Human Shield is the debut release from Saint X a four piece rock band based out of Toronto, Canada. They are building a strong following as a result of their fun yet ironic live shows. There style is a blend of modern rock, metal, alternative and clearly avoiding mainstream pop. Influences that are cited and occasionally detected are Staind, Creed and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Saint X uses a diversity of styles combined with powerful percussion, scorching guitars and funky bass lines to create unique cross-pollinating music. They describe their lyrics as dichotomies, which look at youth/maturity and stability/recklessness to name a but a few. This twelve track CD melds various genres into an energizing unique collection of songs. The opening track 'Never-Ending Song' starts off with strong philosophical vocals merging with a solid beat and midway running into dynamic and diverse guitar chords. The song closes with angry vocals and instrumentation. The song flows through a variety of moods that is a technique used through out the CD. The second song 'Jukebox' captures more of this energy with a driving beat, smoldering guitars and echoing vocals combining with livid almost rap like vocals. Again the twist and turns of the song make for an interesting sound. 'Gone' starts on a slower tempo and gradually picks up the pace as the story unfolds. Human Shield is a potent first effort by the diversely talented Saint X!

Shelly is originally from Texas but moved to New York City to pursue a career in music even though she has a degree in advertising. Bhushan has a silky, alto voice and her delivery is controlled yet soulful. Shelly is backed by seasoned players on her diverse, four track EP. The CD opens with 'Goodtime' a Memphis funk based tune enhanced by Shelly's multi-tracked vocals. 'Run' is an expressive ballad as the instrumentation and vocals subtly ebb and flow. 'Taken' explores a variety of moods and tones ranging from anger to hope. 'Too Hard to Fall' is a eulogy to lost love sung with passion and enhanced by a cello. The Shelly Show explores the blues, rock and soul through diverse and dramatic arrangements and Shelly Bhushan is a persuasive and powerful vocalist!

SHELLEY DAEL WALKER – STITCHES & SKIN: Stitches & Skin is the sophomore release from singer/songwriter Shelley Dael Walker. Shelley started writing and playing music at a young age. Her early influences were classical music and rock. She delicately incorporates these traditions and others into her own unique compositions that feature fine guitar work with subtle beats. Shelley describes her music as pop first and alternative second. Walker has worked in bands but is also a solo artist. On this CD, she is joined by Tim Harmon who plays bass and guitar and Aaron Mlasko on drums. Shelley also plays guitar, piano and some keys on this nine-track collection. The trio creates melodic balanced tunes that showcase Shelley's versatile vocals. She is an expressive singer who sings with rich, angelic tones. Walker has been compared to Sarah McLaughlin and Tori Amos. All the songs are good on this CD but my particular favorites were 'You're Gone' and 'Dream Your Face'. I thought the vocal blends and instrumentation on these two songs were captivating and demonstrated Shelley's fine vocal range. Stitches & Skin is a solid second release from a promising multi-talented musician!

SHELLITO – INGREDIENTS: Ingredients is the sophomore release from Shellito, who is Mike Shellito and Jeff Tanner supported by talented guest musicians. Mike is the producer, singer and songwriter for the group. Jeff plays guitar, bass and harmonizing vocals. This Philadelphia based band magically blends pop, modern, funky jazz and psychedelics into a unique mix of tasteful tracks. All twelve courses include complex instrumentation, poetic lyrics, new wave keys and lots of clever guitars. Mike writes short snappy songs that are filled with one line imagery. Ingredients is meticulously produced and well prepared. Shellito has been compared to a diversity of artists including David Bowie and Simon and Garfunkle. Shellito is imaginative and their voices merge together smoothly. Their music is a variety of spices and flavors served in soft almost whisper like vocals which adds a aura of mystery to their sound. 'All Right' opens with a steady beat and retro guitars that flow into a velvety narrative about Lori. 'Virgo Torpedo' has a groovy grove, faint percussion and intriguing echoing harmonizing vocals. Ingredients is full of flavorful tracks that are subtle, sweet, spicy but never bland. Bon appetite!

SHIMMERPLANET – FOR THE ONE WHO KILLS TOMORROW: Shimmerplanet is the brainchild of Soren Anders. Soren is a classically trained pianist who also writes and sings. Anders is joined by a diverse range of vocalists (including the legendary Lesley Gore) and players on his latest twelve-track CD. Soren's key instrument is a Casio WK3500 keyboard, which he uses to craft various patches, textures and vintage tones. Besides the Casio, Soren plays a Steinway and even an abandoned toy concert piano. On a number of songs, Soren has horn and string arrangements adding to his eclectic mixes. He pens dramatic, emotional and often dark songs about relationships. Anders' arrangements are avant-garde ranging from pop-rock to theatrical. The CD opens strong with the colorful and edgy 'Silence of Midnight' and the blunt but poppy 'On My List'. 'Siren' is powerful with Lesley Gore accompanied by a stirring string section. Shimmerplanet cultivates a sundry of styles in compositions that are out of the ordinary!

SHOFAR – TURN: Shofar is a five man band on a mission. Shofar uses classic and modern rock styles to convey their spiritual messages. Their "vision is to minister full time through music and write songs that will challenge and encourage non-believers to examine who Christ is." Shofar accomplishes this goal on their latest eleven track CD entitled Turn. Their guitar heavy songs generally revolve around a hook, a melody and a theme. Larry Hagner, who is the main songwriter and lead vocalist, sings with passion and range. Shofar's sound is solid, reminiscent of other great rock bands yet very original. 'Turn' the title track has the power of an anthem flowing over encouraging lyrics. 'Turn' builds momentum, speaking boldly about freedom in Jesus. 'Faithful' opens with a slow, serious tone gradually shifting direction until the guitars and rhythms soar before returning to the opening pace for the close. Although these two tracks were my favorites, I believe the whole CD has something good to offer. Shofar's music is enlightening and energized with mass appeal!

SIBERIAN MARBLE – YIN YOUR YANG!!! DOOR TO DOOR DESERT TOUR: Siberian Marble is currently a one-man operation. Boris Zoubkous writes, mixes and plays all the instruments on this thirteen-track release. Boris is also a visual artist and some of his work is pictured in the 18-page full color lyric booklet that comes with the CD. Zoubkous' music defies genres as his songs blend modern rock with subtle New Age, punk and world overtones. Boris' lyrics are obscure observations about life. His songs are not really stories but vivid thoughts strung together. His vocals are deep and sometimes deadpan layered over tight bass and guitar lines along with innovative sound effects. Unusual jams and textures make 'Disguises For Blessings' intriguing, along with its dark, desperate imagery. 'Remind Me To Save The World' contains more harsh descriptions of a world that needs saving. Boris uses a variety of tempos and tones to convey a feeling of anxiety. Yin Your Yang is not for the faint at heart with its shadowy metaphors entrenched in imaginative instrumentation. Boris Zoubkous is a unique artist who paints poetic songs in diverse musical landscapes!

SIDEREAL DAY – ONCE AROUND: Sidereal Day's current line up includes two guitarists, a bass player, a drummer and a keyboardist. Four of the five members of the band sing, thus harmonies are a big part of their music. Once Around is their first, full-length release, which they self produced with Fred Koch. This ten-track collection has a classic rock sound with shades of modern pop and on occasion a country twang. The CD is upbeat with catchy hook lines and crafty guitar leads. The CD clips along at a cheerful pace. 'No Wrong Answer' has a snappy beat propelled by spirited guitars. Harmonizing vocals and sassy keys give the opening track punch as if moves into 'Real Dream' with its edgy guitar riffs and dueling leads. The beat is rock solid and the varied vocals give the song additional texture and tone. S.O.S.D.D. is the closer, it has a bluesy harmonica and the vocals are up-tempo with a country accent. The rocking guitars and beat hit the main point of the song home. Sidereal Day shines brightly on Once Around!

SINEAD O'CONNOR – THROW DOWN YOUR ARMS: Sinead O'Connor was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1967. In 1985, she moved to London to compose and record her first record. Sinead has enjoyed much success as an award winning musician and some scorn as a controversial artist. Today, O'Connor is pursuing a new musical and perhaps spiritual direction. Throw Down Your Arms is a tribute to roots-reggae. The twelve-track CD features a diversity of writers and talented players. Over a three-week period, Sly and Robbie expertly produced the CD in a studio in Jamaica. The music revisits classics, sticking mainly to "what the original composers wrote except for key changes that were more suitable for a woman's voice." The album opens up with 'Jan Nuh Dead' a stark piece with focus on singing and words. The rhythms pick up for the rest of the CD, exploring a rich tapestry of reggae instrumentation and Rastafarian history. O'Connor's vocals are poised and she sings the lyrics with passion. 'Marcus Garvey' and 'Y Mas Gan' were my personal favorites but the CD is strong as a whole. It is interesting to hear reggae sung by a woman and the musicianship and production on Throw Down Your Arms is first rate. Sinead thanks many people on the CD and it sounds like she was really touched by the experience. So much so, that O'Connor is donating 10% of the profits from her latest album for the care of the Rasta Elders in Jamaica.

SKERLAK DEAD – A WASTE OF OXYGEN: Sherlak Dead and The Salt River Band have compiled an eighteen plus one hidden track CD. The songs look at the highs and lows of life from the perspective of a 50-year-old with a smoky voice. The first five grouping of songs are from 2005 and have a country-rock flavor and feature the best production. Tracks six through sixteen are from 1984 and echo textures and tones from that decade. Sherlak's singing was smoother back then. 'Jersey Shore' from this period is a spirited song about the fun Skerlak had growing up in New Jersey during the 60's. The last few songs date back to 1961. They are a bit raw but capture the sprit of a sixteen year old who is making music for the first time. A Waste Of Oxygen is a mostly up-tempo rock CD that pokes fun at life and aging!

SKIPPINGS DISCS: INDIE WOMEN ARTISTS & FEMALE-FRONTED BANDS – SPIDERS FROM VENUS: Spiders From Venus is the latest release from Skipping Discs a northeast independent record company promoting indie musicans and focusing on cover compilations. Spiders From Venus is a play on the David Bowie lyric indicating that this tribute CD features women vocalists and bands fronted by females. This nineteen-track collection showcases creative interpretations of classic Bowie compositions. David himself was cutting edge in the 70's and 80's yet his songs have evolved through the contemporary and fresh ideas of the participating musicians. Many of the paces, ascents and vocal inflections have been changed but the results are impressive. The CD opens with 'Space Oddity' by Pitch Black Dream. Their cover follows the form of the original yet incorporates a more techno sound, which works well in a song about an astronaut. 'Rebel Rebel' by Tegan & Sara featuring Grace Nocturnal still has the edge and energy of the first but the harmonizing female vocals gives it a novel makeover. 'All the Young Dudes' performed by The Switchblade Kittens has a completely different tone with a California flair and subtle changes in the lyrics to reference the west coast. The speed of the song is much faster and frantic in comparison to the Bowie version but interesting all the same. 'Golden Years' by Essra Mohawk in many ways mirrors the original in texture and tone. Essra sounds very much like Bowie, which is a cool trick coming from a girl. Spiders From Venus is ingenious and all the artists and bands show promise and talent!

SKIPPINGDISCS.COM PRESENTS — NEW WOMEN ARTISTS – LOVE HER MADLY: Love Her Madly is a Doors compilation CD from female indie artists. This nineteen-track CD was produced and distributed by Skipping Discs a small independent record company based out of Massachusetts. They specialize in tribute albums and cover compilations. They handle all licensing, production and promotion and musicians receive royalties for their work. This reinterpation of The Doors music is quite timely as the founding members of the band are considering touring and recording under the name the 21st Century Doors. These indie ladies have taken creative liberty with many Doors classics to give them a contemporary rock sound. The dark mysterious carnival music of the original songs has been updated into funky, edgy often hard rocking interpatations. Many of the songs have stronger bass lines and additional instrumentation added a fuller sound to the once simple but amazing Doors format. Of course, female vocals change the pitch of the songs but each artist does these great songs justice. Love Her Madly maintains the sex and intrigue of the originals but each musician brings a unique style to her cover. 'I Look At You' by Krank has Jim like vocal execution but the instrumentation has a harder beat and more powerful guitar cords. 'Take It As It Comes' is also another fine example of an inventive change. The whimsical keyboard solo in the original has been replaced with a jamming guitar. Tone Blonde subtly slips in some of Morrison's poetry reminiscent of a live Doors show. 'Love Me Two Times' by Bernadette McCallion is the closest true interpatation of the original. 'The Soft Parade' by The Saucers is an interesting cover that includes the whimsical keys and tone of the first but there are extra hard rocking guitars and more funky energy. Love Her Madly brings the psychedelic 60's sound into the 21st century with power and imagination!

Each of his songs has its own unique flavor and stylings. Skoota's voice is impressive and versatile as he executes lyrics with passion and poise. The title track utilizes catchy beats and grooves to compliment Skoota's rich layered vocals. A very danceable track followed by another song that will keep you on your feet with its subtle beat and soulful vocals. SLANG – BLUE: Slang, based out of Bulgaria, was formed in 1997. They have been through a number of personal changes but the current core members are tight. Slang is joined by a number of talented, guest musicians who provide bass, horns and additional vocals. Slang's sound incorporates a variety of styles with a focus on rock and power pop. This thirteen-track collection blends both American and European influences but Slang's songs are uniquely their own. Blue is a colorful CD featuring soaring guitar leads, innovative electronics and expressive vocals. The production is crisp yet creative in its selection of chord arrangements and the use of organic and non-organic sounds. The CD starts off with the melodic 'The Wind Of Your Dreams' a tapestry of imaginative electronics woven into traditional rock textures as subtle vocals thread their way through the story. It is followed by the up-tempo 'Without Love' with its insistent guitars, a firm beat and fervent vocals. 'Empty Heart' is a power ballad featuring Amalia on harmonizing vocals. The instrumentation is reflective yet strong. Slang has a distinctive, energetic sound and Blue has plenty to offer!

SLANG – EVERY DAY: In the dictionary "Slang" is the non-standard use of words in a language of a particular social group, and sometimes the creation of new words or importation of words from another language. In the case of this Slang, they've imported elements of western rock to create their own spin on hit music that is anything but standard. Essentially five guys from Bulgaria, Slang is reaching out to the western world with an album's worth of music that should have every day appeal. With modern ballads and contemporary rockers, Slang is an import that contains time tested song craft that could easily yield radio friendly fare if the jocks out there will take a chance on this CD forged behind the old Iron Curtain. 'That Is Why' opens the discs with an upbeat 5:36-long track that gives many reasons why to like this band including the locked in drums and bass that bolster Dimitar Ekimov's raw and appealing vocal clarifications. Peter Glavanov punctuates the tale with measured jolts of lead all tied together with the vocal harmony provide by the 5-man band. 'Colored Shadows' slows it down a bit at the acoustic intro but then soars on its uplifting chorus that contemplates life in a dreamy melody and ends with an exciting and extended keyboard progression. The title track 'Every Day' closes out the 11-song disc with a pulsing and pulsating multi-layered track that showcases the individual members of the band while providing a daily dose of conviction. You don't have to be an insider to understand this Slang so give Every Day a spin today!

SMART APPLE – THE ADVENTURES OF ONE.../VALLEY OF THE DOGZ: Smart Apple is a multi-talented one-man band from the Virginia/Washington DC Metro area. Teddie Tapawan covers all the vocals, guitars, bass and percussion on his CDs. In addition, Tapawan occasionally plays keyboard and is responsible for all his own artwork. Teddie states that he likes all kinds of music and he combines his interests to create his own unique sound. Tapawan describes his music as alternative rock mixed heavily with funk, blues, grudge, metal, techno and rapcore. His compositions have many moods but are a cohesive blend of various genres. Teddie has a wide vocal range as demonstrated on his well-produced CDs. Tapawan's songs include solid guitar solos incorporated into funky rhythms. His deep lyrics are supported by full sound. Kweevak received two disks from Smart Apple, entitled Valley of The Dogz and The Adventures of One. Both are jammed packed with first-class diversified songs. Recommended tracks on Dogz include 2 and 4 . 'Procrastination' opens with a weird guitar sound that grabs and carries you to the hard rocking hook and then returns back to the catchy, unusual grooves. 'Breath Like Water' is a prime example of Teddie's ability to successfully blend different genres into one song. Suggested tracks on One are 5 and 6. 'Morning Light' has driving percussion, bullet shot vocals and high-quality guitar work. 'All I Live Is You' is a great ballad with solid instrumentation. Smart Apple is a smart choice for any music collection.

SMITH BROS. – LOST: Lost is a breakout, smash-hit effort from the Smith Bros. This three-piece power-pop outfit from Columbus, Ohio delivers edgy, exciting music on their debut CD Lost. The Smith Bros. culls from a diversity of influences with traces of The Beatles, the Smithereens and the Gin Blossoms. They use the best elements from the genres from the 60's to the 90's throughout their 13 tracks CD. Mike Clark, the bassist and one of the two vocalists, writes most of their songs. His voice blends beautifully with Pat Dollenmayer, the guitar player and other singer in the band. The triangle is complete with the solid percussion of Matt Gramly. The sound and style throughout the CD is exciting, with great hooks and up-tempo beats. Songs are well crafted and executed with enthusiasm and energy. 'Without You' grabs you with its first rift and carries you through with rockin' guitars, a solid grove and a great hook line. 'Without You' is under consideration by the Fox Network who might use the track for their new series Undelcared. 'Words Fail Me' is a great blend of musical styles with solid instrumentation and a mysterious feel. 'Walk Away' is another good example of how the Smith Bros. blends various styles to create a great song with their own signature. Overall this is an enjoyable CD but I sometimes had difficulty understanding the lyrics - which could have been intentional - like early REM.

SNAKES-N-ANGELS – BACK 2 THE WEASEL RANCH: Back 2 the Weasel Ranch is the latest release from the rock and blues trio Snakes-n-Angels. This band who is based out of North Carolina has two strong lead vocalists, layered beats and smoldering guitar leads. High-octane male and female vocals and towering passions are the norm on this thirteen-track collection. Their musical influences include Clapton, Pink Floyd, Heart and Janis Joplin. Their sound is a potent blend of classic and modern rock with shades of country and an occasional metal edge. Their songs like their name demonstrate duality such as hard rocking tracks followed by subtle ballads. The whole CD has force, catchy hooks and solid musicianship. 'Daze' is an energizing track in which Nannette demonstrates her wide vocal rang with passion and precision. A beguiling beat and stellar guitar work cap off the song. 'Cookin Blues' melds simmering sultry vocals with spicy beats and smoking guitar leads. It is down home blues with a fiery flavor. 'Cry for Justice' is textured with rich zealous vocals, zestful guitar work and a plaintive beat. Snakes-n-Angles is a power packed blues outfit that rocks with emotion and energy! Sadly the fate of the band is unknown as JC Stephenson guitarist, keyboardist and vocalist lost his battle with cancer in March of 2002. Yet, he is alive and well through his music!

SON OF THE SOIL – BORN FREE: Son of the Soil is a lively trio from California. Zafar Amin, who has lived on three continents, is the lead vocalist and guitar player. Greg Riggs (drums) and Bill Steppe (bass) are the hard driving rhythm section. Son of the Soil's sound is a mix of punk and rock with songs ranging from heavy to melodic. They have an all American musical attitude, penning mostly positive songs about universal themes. Son of the Soil is original although they do occasionally sound like classic punk rockers, The Ramones. Born Free is their self produced, debut CD. All fifteen-tracks have an earthy energy. The vintage punk influenced 'Sunshine' opens the CD with a bang with its rapid fire instrumentation and vocals. It is followed by the fractured 'California' with its catchy hooks and galloping guitars. 'New York' is a fun, quirky tribute to the big apple. The track also has a lot of bridge changes and innovative instrumentation. 'Like Collard Greens' has some great guitar work, intriguing bass lines and other subtle tones to complete this fine meal. SOS – A GUIDE TO BETTER LIVING: SOS has been on the New York City hard rock scene for over a decade building a strong following for fervent live performances. A Guide To Better Living is their fourth release, featuring seventeen songs of sonic explosions. All three core members sing with aggression, the two guitars are crunchy and the rhythm section is hard hitting. The CD pulsates from the opening vocals to the last note. I particularly liked the attitude and force of 'Star Killers', 'Everything Must Go' and 'Slut'. SOTOSOUNDZ – OCTOPUS HEAD: SotoSoundz is a one-woman organization. Karen Sotomayor is a songwriter, singer, multi-instrumentalist and arranger. Besides E.J. Trbovic who handles the drums, Karen plays guitars, bass and keys. Sotomayor is a passionate, powerful vocalist who has been compared to Grace Slick. Karen who has been involved in music since age six also runs her own label. This talented lady has compiled an eight-track collection that melds classic with contemporary sounds. Her music is a magical brew of 60's psychedelic rock with funky reverbs combined with modern, alternative edges and feedback. The CD starts on an aggressive note with 'Burnin' with Desire'. Scorching guitar leads are layered over a heavy beat and Karen's vocals are deep and fiery. 'Situation Opportunist' contains perhaps not the most catchy hook line but it is still entrancing with experimental instrumentation merging into Karen's vocals that are strong, drawn out and dreamy. 'Just A Little Jam...Please' is very retro utilizing low, reverb tunings with haunting vocals. Karen rocks with originality and echoes of the past but is also very modern.

Greg DiGesu is the lead singer and main songwriter for this talented six-piece band. In addition, Greg is an accomplished producer and engineer who has worked with many respected musicians including Lenny Kravitz and John Mayer. DiGesu's production is first rate on this diverse rock collection that is touched by the blues and light punk. Their sound is full bodied with diverse textures, inventive guitar leads, funky beats, synthesizer accents and animated sometime haunting vocals. The fourteen songs plus the hidden track on this collection have vaguely familiar influences such as Lou Reed and early Bowie yet it is fresh and original. Greg and his fellow composers write strong visual lyrics and intriguing instrumentation completes the package. 'Desiree' is a prime example with poetic words blending with a lively captivating groove and a subtle beat melding with expressive vocals. It is followed by 'Therapy As Rock n Roll' with its restrained blues vibe combined with innovative guitar work, a rock solid beat and carried by potent piano notes. I am still trying to figure out the meaning of the lyrics but the hook line is catchy and the song has soul. 'Super Daddy' has depth with its dynamic guitars, intriguing keyboard work and storytelling vocals. Speedsters and Dopsters are modern troubadours with a unique intriguing sound!

It is an up-tempo rocker that is catchy and packs a punch. 'Velvet Chains' has a robust pace, galloping guitars and is sung with gusto. 'Rolling Thunder' starts off with booming guitars before the pace slows to a more reflective tone and then returns to the heavy guitar licks. Each member of the band has different tastes and influences, which merge into this compilation of cohesive music that can be described as joyfully improvisational. The instrumentation on this CD is exceptional and SDP invites other talented musicians to play on their songs to give them an even deeper, wider sound. STEVE HOWE – MOTIF VOLUME 1: Steve Howe grew up in a musical household and got his first guitar at age twelve. Listening to different players, Steve formulated the idea that one guitarist could play any kind of guitar style. This concept has been the core of Steve's creativity for more than four decades. In 1970, he joined the progressive rock band Yes, where his innovative interpretations of classical, country, jazz and rock flourished. Steve also enjoyed success in the super-group ASIA and has released numerous solo albums. Motif Volume 1 is Steve's latest masterpiece. The CD features twenty career spanning instrumentals. The compositions explore various melodies, moods and musical styles. Howe plays nine different guitars (including electric, folk, Spanish, 12 string and a dobro slide) giving the record a wide range. The production is stark allowing the songs to stand on their own merit. The CD is mellow with many high points including the colorful "Devon Blue" the classic "Clap", the timeless "Heritage" and the spirited "Bareback". I am a big fan of Steve Howe, thus perhaps a bit bias, but I think Motif Volume 1 is a perfect record.

STRATOVARIUS – POLARIS: In a way the name of the band defines the music. Stratovarius combines the designation of two instruments. A Stratocaster guitar to represent rock and a Stradivarius violin that alludes to the classical elements of the band's complex compositions. Stratovarius was formed in Finland in the mid-eighty's. The group has had their fair share of turbulent times including the departure of long time member Timo Tolkki who is credited as a key creative force in the band. He was replaced by guitarist Matias Kupiainen who brings new energy and emotion to Stratovarius. Matias joins the current line up of Timo Kotipelto (vocals), Lauri Porra (bass), Jorg Michael (drums) and Jens Johansson (keys). Polaris is an eleven track CD of artfully arranged anthems and powerful progressive rock prose. The music melds melodic with metal in passionate, precise pieces. "Falling Star" is catchy yet complex. "Blind" is bold with creative time changes, pounding percussion and speedy scales. Both "Emancipation Suites "are epic with expansive instrumentation. Stratovarius remains true to their reputation as innovators of neo-classical metal. Yet Polaris sets a fresh course for Stratovarius with sophisticated songs that are polished and potent. The band will be touring in 2009 in support of the new record.

SUPERDANGER – FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT!: Superdanger is a young power trio from Minnesota. Superdanger has two main songwriters, one influenced by 70's rock the other by punk and all three sing. Thus, their self-produced, eleven-track CD is diverse. Fight! Fight! Fight! blends elements of pop, punk and rock in energized arrangements with light doses of distortion. On a number of songs, Superdanger reminds me of The Cure but their music is still original. 'Suicide Grrrlz' is the dark, edgy opener with its infectious, pop flow, an innovative contrast. 'Robette' is a modern, up-tempo number with interesting changes and vocal exchanges. 'Good Vs Evil' features deep bass lines paired with driving drumbeats and snappy guitar parts all whirling around the call fight! fight! fight! Superdanger comes out fighting on their latest release!

SUZANNE STRICKLAND– FREEFALL: Freefall is the debut release from the multi-talented Suzanne Strickland. Suzanne is classically trained and has played woodwinds and percussion from primary through high school. Her interest in music continued as she attended college to receive a degree in education. Strickland is currently teaching music in Washington State. Suzanne wrote, arranged and produced her solo release. In addition to that she plays piano, woodwinds, strings, some bass, percussion and is the vocalist on this project. Amazingly she does all of these tasks well and the finished product is an assorted collection of contemporary songs. Strickland has been described as a cross between Sarah McLachlan and George Winston. This fifteen track CD melds "acoustic pop vocals with symphonic visual instrumentation' thus reaching a wide range of listeners. Her songs speak about happiness, heartbreak and challenges. The opening title track is a poignant piano piece touched with subtle sounds of the pan flute, the English horn, the French horn, strings and soft bass lines. It gently runs into 'Road Poetry' an instrumental prose that is sweet and smooth. 'Until a Rainy Day' is an intimate song about lost love. The opening keys are somber as they merge into Suzanne's expressive vocals. Soft electric and acoustic guitars complete the song. Freefall is a diverse soundscape of instrumental and vocal tracks that weave a interesting and enjoyable musical tapestry.

SWEET BILLY PILGRIM – WE JUST DID WHAT HAPPENED AND NO ONE CAME: Sweet Billy Pilgrim is Anthony Bishop, Tim Elsenburg and Alistair Hamer. The musical trio and producers are based out of the UK. We Just Did What Happened and No One Came is their debut CD. The nine earthy tracks are presented in stark arrangements with some delicate effects. The songs have a melancholy tone within a D minor range. The vocals are low key and the instrumentation atmospheric as the storylines unfold. 'Stars Spill Out of Cups' was the best of the bunch with its soft yet diverse sounds. If you are in the mood for serious, subtle music, Sweet Billy Pilgrim's freshman release should fit the bill.
